novak is 2.8.........going for history to pass nadal with 23 slams and trying to be the only man to win all 4 slams at least 3 times.
he hasnt played well since he won the aus open. he played a few tournaments on clay and he was bang average.
he has dropped only 1 set on reaching the semis here. he hasnt looked explosive but has he ever at Roland garros?
alacaraz has walked into the semis, only dropping 1 set but winning his matches easier than novak.
i was expecting the 1.55 - 2.8 prices.
what u think guys? will the market be correct? this may be novaks last chance to win another french. hes 36 after all.

Nope - for the reason I gave further up.
He knows that if he can go toe to toe & even beat the greatest ever player on clay, then nobody else will come close.

Report stu June 10, 2023 11:35 AM BST
You're right, on both points - but it still remains his weakest possible surface overall.

So here is the best chance to beat him, especially as it's Ruud's favourite surface by far.
Report stu June 10, 2023 11:46 AM BST
He has beaten great players like Rafa on this surface, but he's also lost plenty times on this surface too. And he isn't exactly going to be better than he's been in the past, when younger.

He's worthy favourite of course, just putting out the possible chances for Ruud here - only Rafa stopped him last time here.

I would say his weakest surface is grass. The problem is that this applies to most players and these days his grass level is far above anyone else's.

Report Journeyman June 10, 2023 3:58 PM BST
Interesting take.

It could be expanded to say Novak collected slams when other players were better on all surfaces. French Opens when Nadal was the best clay courter, Wimbledons when Fed was the greatest grass player.
More contentiously at least a couple of Australian opens at a time when Murray was the best hard court player in the world.

I love Rafa almost as much as I love Arsenal but Novak he is the GOAT. Any other discussion is churlish & futile.
Report Platini June 11, 2023 10:20 AM BST
I just don't accept that Novak is better on grass than clay, despite all the Wimbledon wins.

He grew up on clay and has always been superb on clay, but Nadal is just a ridiculous obstacle at Roland Garos.
The game has changed massively last 10-15 years, and there's just very few players who can play on grass, and very very few tournies on grass.
So the Wimbledon field is always weak as **** compared to other slams, his task there so much easier.
Report Wesdag June 11, 2023 11:13 AM BST
Tbf re grass, he can only beat what's in front of him.
He probably does have a better record in terms of consistency on clay v grass & but for a certain person would no doubt have won Roland Garros at least half a dozen times.
Report stu June 11, 2023 11:16 AM BST
He overcame Federer and Murray etc more on Grass and Hard, then he managed to do against Rafa on clay - and he's lost to others in this slam on clay also to add.

Of course he's a great player on all surfaces, just I think he's that bit better on others which is clear in his overall record winning more on other surfaces - if he was as great on clay, he would have won more on it.
Report Wesdag June 11, 2023 11:25 AM BST

Report stu June 11, 2023 11:44 AM BST
and I haven't said he's not a great player on this surface, but you have to try to pick holes in a selection when it's the shortie IMO.
