The slam target being 22 rather than 21 is surely a factor.
Being two away rules out the 'what if' possibility of a lucky draw, sequence of events or 'perfect storm'. He'd have to do it twice so forget it. Secondly the mugging of that Wimbledon final to Novak turns out not to matter anyway as 21 wouldn't have been enough. (Being one behind aka Serena/court might have made irrationality and time/logic definace more likely.)

Would also have expected him to retire at either Basel (even though relations were sometimes strained regarding appearance fee) or next year's Wimbledon. He basically owns Laver Cup though, so that's not entirely surprising either.
So his knee is in really bad shape not to play Basel whereas with Laver Cup he can tell his opponent to go easy on him and they can play more of an exhibition type match?
it's a lame way to go out in such a jumped up and manufactured tournament, as far as I'm concerned his last defeat was in straights to Hurkacz, sent out with a bagel. I imagine he'll only play doubles at Laver Cup, if he couldn't even get through a week in Basel there was zero chance he could get through a first week at a slam let alone win another 1 or 2.
I think he only carried on because he was so upset at Swebih asking him to retire in 2013, so he carried on another 9 years to piss him off.

If he had a crystal ball that said "Even if you spend the next 14 months rehabbing your knee, it won't get much better and you'll never be able to be competitive again" I'm sure he would have, but athletes like Roger Federer, and other great ones who have dealt with injuries, would have not achieved the greatness they have reached if they quit as soon as they faced some setbacks. If you have knee problems, and it's not because you've excessively plays sports for years, it could be because you put too much weight on your knee when leaning on one side of your body/leg when you are standing up for a period of time, be it at a sink or a bar or wherever, most people don't even realise they're doing it, it's just because it feels comfortable, but it's putting excess pressure on your knee joints and over time that leads to arthritis or degradation of the medial tibia which gives you knee pain.
Nadal will have to carry the crook around court. Should retire with dignity and grace after he realised he was fit for the knackers yard some months ago.

Very emotional scenes but Nadal carried him in that to make it as close as it was fed was a great champion but a level below both nadal and djockovic imo
PMSL a level below Novak..? are you Bobby Moore? Novak has no signature shots, no style, cant volley for toffee and just bored people from the back of the court. Nadal and Fed completely different level to Novak.
Is it about entertaining or about winning? Federer is not as good as Novak or Nadal , because he can finish a point quicker than both and more entertaining than both does not make him better , hes the best to watch but hes not the best
Nadal i agree with, Novak not a prayer. Does Novak play tennis to win games or just not to lose them, big difference IMO.

To go out in a doubles match, 12.30 am, on a cold September night in South East London was a very odd way to end what was a great career, you'd have thought Basel would have been perfect next month in front of his home crowd where it all started for him as a ball boy, or maybe limp on til Wimbledon and end your career walking off of the most sacred and sacrosanct court in the world where you had your most success, on a warm summers day in July, but instead he choose the manufactured tournament that is the Laver Cup for his own financial gain given he is part owner to give it as much publicity as possible, lame. Walking off court in a normal fashion in Basel or SW19 would have been more befitting of someone who's whole career was built around an image of class and dignity, but the whole sitting down fake crying and the orchestrated and limp throwing him up in the air thing by the other players that seemed half hearted, was uncomfortable to watch, God knows what Nadal was doing breaking and down and crying as well, he was the least emotional throughout his whole career with the big for, or any top player going further back, to see him in floods of tears also seemed put on for some reason.
Goodbye Federer, farewell fedtards, go and watch Golf or something now, we need to cleanse the sport of your fedtardiness which will take some time, it's left a mess everywhere. Kind Regards.

I'm not a massive fan of the GOAT debate anyway.
What will be mostly remembered is the era itself.
They achieved what they achieved in large part because of the rivalry and that's why I warmed to Fed proactively drawing Murray into the spotlight during the Laver cup hullabaloo. Muzz was right there with them for a long time and his competitiveness against them, the number of slam finals he got to (as opposed to just the ones he won) and reaching number 1 in the era of the elite means it will always be a Big 4 for me.
People forget how relatively monotonous the Sampras era was. Nobody could really compete with him consistently and he just racked up a load of titles in a vacuum. The world outsuide the bubble hardly cared and men's tennis in the 1990s is now mercifully archived.
This era will be talked about as long as tennis is played. It has been a privlege to experience.

sampras only had 1 rival thoughout his career - agassi - and andre was sporadic..........he went missing for three peak years, 1996/97/98. he admitted that he did not practice in those three years and his form was terrible........sampras retired too early though. he hinted at this in various interviews. he played in only 52 slams, compared to 60 odd for rafa/novak and 80 odd for federer........he won his last slam - the 2002 us open.
Its been a privelage to have watched this era, the big 4 and dont forget del potro he could mix it with them aswell, but for me the Novak v rafa games have been the cream of it, the standard these 2 guys played to under the utmost pressure was amazing, i hope for 1 more final between the 2 maybe even RG next year and let Nadal go out on a high winning his beloved French Open but i feel hes not far behind fed.

Ah that 2012 final in Australia was quality to, always remember 1 shot nadal had in the 5th set to hold serve after he broke, he missed an essy chance, novak broke and that was it really, but its the greatest rivalry in any sport imo , in terms of sheeer quality it beats everything
