body obviously couldn't handle even getting through home tournament of Basel next month

The slam target being 22 rather than 21 is surely a factor.

Being two away rules out the 'what if' possibility of a lucky draw, sequence of events or 'perfect storm'. He'd have to do it twice so forget it. Secondly the mugging of that Wimbledon final to Novak turns out not to matter anyway as 21 wouldn't have been enough. (Being one behind aka Serena/court might have made irrationality and time/logic definace more likely.)

20 is enough for immortality. Plus he's got the love and his name will always be in the conversation.

Would also have expected him to retire at either Basel (even though relations were sometimes strained regarding appearance fee) or next year's Wimbledon. He basically owns Laver Cup though, so that's not entirely surprising either.
Report SamuelMertensBertens September 15, 2022 2:50 PM BST
So his knee is in really bad shape not to play Basel whereas with Laver Cup he can tell his opponent to go easy on him and they can play more of an exhibition type match?
Report mesmerised September 15, 2022 2:50 PM BST
it's a lame way to go out in such a jumped up and manufactured tournament, as far as I'm concerned his last defeat was in straights to Hurkacz, sent out with a bagel. I imagine he'll only play doubles at Laver Cup, if he couldn't even get through a week in Basel there was zero chance he could get through a first week at a slam let alone win another 1 or 2.

I think he only carried on because he was so upset at Swebih asking him to retire in 2013, so he carried on another 9 years to piss him off.

Pretty sure you can't play just doubles unless he changes the rules for himself.

Should've retired last year after Wimbledon.

Totally shot to pieces as indicated by the farewell bagel.

If he had a crystal ball that said "Even if you spend the next 14 months rehabbing your knee, it won't get much better and you'll never be able to be competitive again" I'm sure he would have, but athletes like Roger Federer, and other great ones who have dealt with injuries, would have not achieved the greatness they have reached if they quit as soon as they faced some setbacks. They will try and try again to overcome whatever they're facing until it's 100% clear that their bodies are no longer allowing them to do so.

If you have knee problems, and it's not because you've excessively plays sports for years, it could be because you put too much weight on your knee when leaning on one side of your body/leg when you are standing up for a period of time, be it at a sink or a bar or wherever, most people don't even realise they're doing it, it's just because it feels comfortable, but it's putting excess pressure on your knee joints and over time that leads to arthritis or degradation of the medial tibia which gives you knee pain.

Nadal will have to carry the crook around court. Should retire with dignity and grace after he realised he was fit for the knackers yard some months ago.

Very emotional scenes but Nadal carried him in that to make it as close as it was fed was a great champion but a level below both nadal and djockovic imo
Report now wheres that switch!!! September 25, 2022 10:39 AM BST
PMSL a level below Novak..? are you Bobby Moore? Novak has no signature shots, no style, cant volley for toffee and just bored people from the back of the court. Nadal and Fed completely different level to Novak.
Report The Bhoys September 25, 2022 1:14 PM BST
Is it about entertaining or about winning? Federer is not as good as Novak or Nadal , because he can finish a point quicker than both and more entertaining than both does not make him better , hes the best to watch but hes not the best
Report now wheres that switch!!! September 25, 2022 3:50 PM BST
Nadal i agree with, Novak not a prayer. Does Novak play tennis to win games or just not to lose them, big difference IMO.

now where's that fedtard!!!

this is the problem with demented fedtards, they are fedtards to the bitter end, fedtards to the death, with their fedtardeded tinted glasses where no other players exist in their gooey eyed fedtard world. The best thing about Federer's career ending and the fanfare that went with it, is the fedtards will slowly fade away with him, they have ruined tennis over the last 20 years with their fawning, pining and general infatuation as have the media who are just as bad. So fedtarded are fedtards, when they've run out of all positive statistics he once held to acclaim him as the GOAT, they then reduce themselves to maintain his elevation at the greatest by shifting the goalposts over to his superior playing style and 'signature shots' insteadLaugh beating Novak with the playing style stick is not going to give Federer those 11 slam matches he lost to Novak in nor given him more slams than him.

Their level of tennis was both incredibly high and talent equally similar albeit with different playing styles, but to call one the greatest over the other because he was more aesthetically pleasing means you're away with the fairies, painfully biased and probably wont ever admit it, all fedtards are the same, partisan, self-made, PR foot soldiers who worship at the temple of Federer and are militant like in their response to anyone who dares questions his legacy or standing in the game regardless of facts, statistics or evidence to the contrary. Love is blind and so is loyalty.

Incidentally, I thought the ending to his career was remarkably underwhelming, staged, and downright peculiar.
To go out in a doubles match, 12.30 am, on a cold September night in South East London was a very odd way to end what was a great career, you'd have thought Basel would have been perfect next month in front of his home crowd where it all started for him as a ball boy, or maybe limp on til Wimbledon and end your career walking off of the most sacred and sacrosanct court in the world where you had your most success, on a warm summers day in July, but instead he choose the manufactured tournament that is the Laver Cup for his own financial gain given he is part owner to give it as much publicity as possible, lame. Walking off court in a normal fashion in Basel or SW19 would have been more befitting of someone who's whole career was built around an image of class and dignity, but the whole sitting down fake crying and the orchestrated and limp throwing him up in the air thing by the other players that seemed half hearted, was uncomfortable to watch, God knows what Nadal was doing breaking and down and crying as well, he was the least emotional throughout his whole career with the big for, or any top player going further back, to see him in floods of tears also seemed put on for some reason.

Goodbye Federer, farewell fedtards, go and watch Golf or something now, we need to cleanse the sport of your fedtardiness which will take some time, it's left a mess everywhere. Kind Regards.

"but to call one the greatest over the other because he was more aesthetically pleasing means you're away with the fairies".........spot on. its about lifting grand slam trophies and hes not the greatest. both rafa and novak are ahead of him now and 6-3 and 4-1 in h2h v fed in slam finals.......there are no stats to suggest he is the goat. end of.
Report The Bhoys September 27, 2022 8:05 PM BST
|Suppose there is a possible argument him being second behind rafa considering his dominance on the clay at one grandslam but there is no argument against novak

Fed best offensively
Novak best defensively
Rafa best combo.
Imo.

I'm not a massive fan of the GOAT debate anyway.
What will be mostly remembered is the era itself.

They achieved what they achieved in large part because of the rivalry and that's why I warmed to Fed proactively drawing Murray into the spotlight during the Laver cup hullabaloo. Muzz was right there with them for a long time and his competitiveness against them, the number of slam finals he got to (as opposed to just the ones he won) and reaching number 1 in the era of the elite means it will always be a Big 4 for me.

People forget how relatively monotonous the Sampras era was. Nobody could really compete with him consistently and he just racked up a load of titles in a vacuum. The world outsuide the bubble hardly cared and men's tennis in the 1990s is now mercifully archived.

This era will be talked about as long as tennis is played. It has been a privlege to experience.
Report brain dead jockeys September 29, 2022 5:34 AM BST
sampras only had 1 rival thoughout his career - agassi - and andre was sporadic..........he went missing for three peak years, 1996/97/98. he admitted that he did not practice in those three years and his form was terrible........sampras retired too early though. he hinted at this in various interviews. he played in only 52 slams, compared to 60 odd for rafa/novak and 80 odd for federer........he won his last slam - the 2002 us open.
Report The Bhoys September 29, 2022 8:12 PM BST
Its been a privelage to have watched this era, the big 4 and dont forget del potro he could mix it with them aswell, but for me the Novak v rafa games have been the cream of it, the standard these 2 guys played to under the utmost pressure was amazing, i hope for 1 more final between the 2 maybe even RG next year and let Nadal go out on a high winning his beloved French Open but i feel hes not far behind fed.
Report brain dead jockeys September 30, 2022 8:34 PM BST
the novak rafa rivalry is the greatest in history. because it doesnt include fed, the mainstream media dont rate it as high as the rafa/fed rivalry.
the 2013 french semi final where rafa defeated novak in 5 sets is probably the greatest clay court match ever played
2012 aus open final where novak won in 5 sets is another classic and then there is the 2018 wimbledon semi where novak won in 5 sets......another masterpiece

novaks beating of rafa in 6 finals in 2011 is probably the most significant turnarounds in tennis history. rafa was beginning to get the better of fed on all surfaces and had novak in his back pocket, but then novak beat rafa in indian wells, miami, madrid, italian, wimbledon, USO finals........

considering all those significant victories by novak over nadal, the h2h in all matches is only 30-29 to novak but rafa has the 5-4 slam finals upper hand
Report The Bhoys September 30, 2022 9:08 PM BST
Ah that 2012 final in Australia was quality to, always remember 1 shot nadal had in the 5th set to hold serve after he broke, he missed an essy chance, novak broke and that was it really, but its the greatest rivalry in any sport imo , in terms of sheeer quality it beats everything
Report The Bhoys September 30, 2022 9:10 PM BST
I lost some money backing against novak in 2011, always felt like it was always guna end but it never did
