It has been an inconsistent year for Madison Keys. I think that's a polite and accurate comment.

Also the Metro newspaper probably has it right for once tipping Halep (& the Mastermind) as the tournament winner. Simona has a not unreasonable draw and she's coming in off the back of a very solid 1000 win and we've seen that story play out before in this random-sequence streak-dictated year.

I do think Madison can make the semis though.

Keys isn't the most obvious selection. She didn't just crash out of Toronto, she was absolutely terrible.  Which means there should be very good prices coming up against Beatriz/Osty and then Iga.

However, out of the singles spotlight she then put in a very decent doubles performance with Mirza and the Scooby Sense is saying that will carry across to her singles form and that she's going to make some moves here. She won here three years ago and she's a player that draws on good memories of past wins. Buyer beware as aside from her 'patchy' singles form she's been getting distracted by the same kinds of bandwagons that knocked Osaka off the rails.

Obviously this is a terrible call if she goes out to Putintseva, and so to put my nuts on the line so to speak, in old-school style if she wins less than 6 games in that match I'll take a phorum time out until 30/12/2023.

Keys is a somewhat unique tennis player but I do strongly fancy the 2019 champion to put in a shift here. And in the (highly) unlikely event that Simona trips up before the semis.. well who knows what can happen.

Into the Quarter Finals!

Since putting this up, Madison has played three matches and she hasn't dropped a set.

Putintseva. (Keys 1.61 favourite)
Ostapenko. (Osty was 1.8 favourite to lay pre)
Swiatek at a big price. (Iga was 1.25 to lay pre)

The WTA site threw up an interesting stat. Keys was 0-5 in matches (and 0-10 in sets) against world number ones up until last night which adds to my own sense that we've entered a period without a clear top player.

Anyway three matches to go and no reason she can't go the whole way now. I had Halep and Pliskova down as the most serious threats and both are gone. Rybakina is 1.75 fave today, they had a close match in France since when Elena became the world's most DGAF Wimbledon champion.

But Madison is a supernova hard court player when it's all clicking and this is the best singles run she's put together since May.

Good vision, would not have backed her to beat Poots, Penko and Swiatek in a row.

Backed her to be a slam winner way back in May 2014 when she had just turned 19 on the predict the future slam winners thread, she almost obliged in the US Open final at the age of 22, this upcoming slam is her best hope. Then again I backed Kiki and she is hopeless.

which adds to my own sense that we've entered a period without a clear top player.

Been saying this for some time as well, the tour needs 2-3 dominate players to go off and create their mini battles and rivalries, it yearns for a Evert/Navratilova - Graf/Seles - Serena/Venus duopoly or even a triology, feels like it's plodding along with nobody wanting to take the mantle.

I would imagine whoever you and I think will win the US Open, probably wont, it'll be a Mertens or Alexandrova, something out of the blue.

Keys credits her run to the doubles semifinals with Sania Mirza in Toronto for turning her mentality around.

"Just having that opportunity to have some fun, play some matches, get that competitive, it's-fine, go-out-and-play tennis really helped shift this week's mentality."

Cool Thanks guys!
The key question is now... can she hold that mentality together for (surely) JUST A FEW WEEKS and finally win a slam.
Like you say Mes it really does seem like her best hope.
