This has car crash written all over it, to the extent that I'm wondering if this is as much a strategic column inches grab in the build up to the USO to underline Emma as a high impact influencer as it is a sports based appointment.

Yes Dmitry was great for Kontaveit, basically changing her life. But this is a completely different dynamic. A defending hard court slam winner with the potential to be the most internationally marketable female tennis player on the planet but who is dependent on finding the top level results to unlock that treasure chest.

What exactly about Kontaveit's run under Tursunov is Emma wanting to emulate? Crashing out of the Australian Open in Round 2? The disastrous Sunshine double?
This is so obviously deader than the Monty Python parrot by Christmas day. Are coaches that build up a good reputation with one player going to keep on queuing up to be left on the sidewalk after a few months by the Raducanu superstar circus? Logic says no but here we are.

Maybe the accompanying rush of media interest is a lure in its own right. Certainly the level of press noise underlines that when it comes to registering an impact outside the 'bubble', with the possible exception of Naomi, Raducanu is still the main show in town.

The Express reports today
'Emma Raducanu has been warned she will be used for Russian propaganda after she hired Moscow-born Dmitry Tursunov to be her new tennis coach. The comments were made by the chair of the all Parliamentary group on Russia, Chris Bryant, who encouraged the 19-year-old to reconsider her decision. / (Tursonov) has made no public statement about the war and would have to sign a formal declaration denouncing the Ukrainian invasion if he was to ever work in Britain. / Raducanu’s decision has caught the eye of British politicians including Bryant. The Labour MP, who is also a member of the foreign affairs select committee, encouraged the US Open champion to reconsider the appointment fearing its propaganda potential.

“The Kremlin will portray this as a PR coup and an indication that the UK doesn’t really care about the war in Ukraine, so it’ll be a real shame if Emma goes ahead with this,” Bryant told Telegraph Sport. “I urge her to think again and at the very least to condemn Putin’s barbaric war.”

Julian Knight, chairman of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee was also keen to have his say, encouraging the Lawn Tennis Association to step in. The LTA helps support Raducanu, providing her with science, wellbeing and medicinal support.  “It does jar to see a Russian coaching Britain’s number one rising star,” he told the Telegraph. “You would hope that the LTA would show some leadership on this and be able to advise Emma what is the best course of action.” Mr Knight also believes that ‘a conversation needs to be had’ about his views on the war if he is to continue working with Raducanu. '

I may well be missing something and being a touch too cynical about this. It just doesn't seem to me like a decision made with the long term in mind.

I wouldn't call Tursunov a one hit wonder. He did well with Aryna too.
As for Emma and him, it will come down to chemistry I would think. I consider him a competent coach so if they along fine it could work out, but Torben is far more proven and that didn't work out.

this propaganda stuff is just not worth the time of day, they've already had a Russian winning Wimbledon when Russians were banned, it can't get any worse than that, a coach of a player winning anything, pales into insignificance, Rybakina took her Wimbledon trophy, and went straight home, to Moscow.

But what really did they do with the news Rybakina won SW19 that really changed anything, it literally has zero impact on whatever is happening in Ukraine whatsoever, just an air time and newspaper filler at best, they make out like it's some amazing tool that will shape the direction of travel of this war, it wont.

Not sure why Emma wants him, a possibility she fancies him maybe, or maybe he's just a good coach who taskmaster approached went only so far with his previous prodigies but she thinks might suit her.

This makes as much sense as anything else. But I think the thing with Raducanu is that she seems to self-generate a lot of her own peaks.  She was talking this week about not training for eight months and considering giving up during the Pandemic but then she surged to a slam pretty much out of the blue and there was a newspaper article this year about Richardson having been looking around going 'how is he doing this'. I realised that reminded me a bit of Torben at Stuttgart when Emma with virtually no clay experience came very close to getting on top of Iga on her unbeatable surface, and that surge kind of came out of nowhere as well.
I&E seem to be interested in shaking some ideas out of coaches to throw into the overall mix because why not, but not in her being coached in an uber serious way.

Emma's agents probably searched and offered her some potential coaching options. she/her parents decided to go with Tursunov. I imagine he'll be gone by the end of the season and they'll have someone new by the time Aus Open 2023 rolls around

Emma may develop into an elite top 3 player winning 3 or more singles slams, but she definitely isn't there yet and I wouldn't be shocked if she didn't win another slam in her career

Emma Raducanu says this week (and last week) with coach Dmitry Tursunov is on a trial basis, and won’t be continuous; she said Tursunov already has preexisting commitments for Toronto next week.

Emma knows it's a bad look and she'll announce Wim as her new coach next week

Greg Rusedski was raving about her choices against Serena (serve placement/positioning on the return) & giving credit to Tursonov.

Tursonov is in Cincinatti on an 'experimental' 2 week trial according to Tennis365.
So the pressure's on! Or she could be canning him just before the US Open starts. Laugh

Landed with two and a half months to spare!

Raducanu fanatics are pointing to Tursonov walking away to work with another mystery player.
Dangling him on the end of an ongoing rolling 'trial' was always likely to end in tears though.

Shes a waste of space and is defiantly impossible to work for since she made her fame

She sacked the coach that she was with when she won the US Open... Crazy

Shes got a high opinion of herself and doesnt listen to anyone but herself or those fame masters she works for
