As I'm about to head off to Malta for a few weeks I'm gonna flounce early before the forum caterers arrive with Rafa party champers and cake.
I'll sign out with a couple of dodgy contrarian predictions on the ladies semis after a volatile but always exciting tournament.
Having predicted the Tuscan Grinner would win her 4th round match I thought she would lose to Leylah in the quarters. But though she smiled like a 1980s Jack Nicholson at her opponent at matchpoint then promptly lost the set on the tiebreak she showed resilience to withstand Leylah's surging end-of-set self belief (which ofc floored Anisimova in IW). So Trevisan is made of tough if uncharismatic stuff. Her level here is built on her win in Morocco, her hunger evident and she's brought a ton of self belief from the sunshine fields of Florence.
Gauff beat Sloane in straights after a tight first set but appearances can be deceptive. Sloane was on an out-of-nowhere heater that was likely to drop off imminently, she had no form. She also has a life outside the tennis bubble now and from her press conference obviously couldn't wait to get back to it. It's also Gauff's first slam SF, she has a weight of expectation on her and has already mugged a slam in 2022. She may win ofc but imo she is terrible value.
3.7 is too big for Trevisan. She has a great chance here so that is my main dodgy contrarian prediction.
Trevisan to beat Gauff is 3.7 Trevisan tournament winner is currently 30s
Kasatkina on the sidecar has brought her superb clay form from Rome and has just beaten three tough opponents in straight sets. An important factor is that she's about to get locked out of Wimbledon so can give winning this title 110% in both effort and concentration. Iga may be surprised by the reaction to her not calling the double bounce that gave her a crucial service break in a tight first set with J-Peg. Does tennis need to give itself a shake regarding this kind of thing? Caroline Wozniacki commentator on the Tennis Channel took the stance that a player should own up to a double bounce. Regardless of where anyone stands on the issue it's a distraction that might affect her semi final concentration. This match will be about a few fleeting key moments so every little edge counts. On another time of the month she may have lost the 4th round so she's not invincible. Also all the talk of the streak she's on equates the pressure of slams with WTA1000s which is unrealistic.
8.6 seems massive on an absolutely peaking Kasatkina so that's my sidecar dodgy prediction.
Kasatkina to beat Iga 8.6 Kasatkina tournament winner gone into 14s
Catch y'all for the swirling chaos (TM JM) of 'no points Wimbledon'. Looks like metal hip Muzza and Emma might play some mixed which would be cool for the Jubilee !
