It was always going to be about this run. From Istanbul through to Roland Garros in 2022.
Here at the event where she won he first WTA title for over a decade and where she said she found the joy again. Interesting that she's the 2nd seed behind Mertens (one place higher in the rankings) who she dispatched in last year's final. As a result she's in the bottom half of the draw avoiding the three players that could be very problematic (the surging force of Kalinina and the irrepressible Magda Linette hot from Charleston and the dangerous unexposed wild card Bartunkova. Mertens can worry about them.)
Sorana has had a strong 2022 so far. Good runs in Melbourne and Lyon and though the sunshine double was quieter she should be rested and ready for an explosive clay season. In Istanbul last year she started to marry more discipline to her trademark aggression and the title win underlined her refinding the joy of playing. Sasnovich isn't the ideal start but Sorana has become more reliable at beating players she should be beating and then her draw already looks good and may open up further.
Successfully defending the title she won without dropping a set would be the prefect first step on the road to the one she really wants.
Solid straight sets start over the lucky loser Rakhimova. Rus is next up and another straights sets win has to be the plan, Arantxa just a year younger H-H 2-0, 1 on clay.
It was interesting that Sabalenka (becoming known for missing opportunities) was wishing for more slams on Soc Med after the US Open and faced pushback on that. The public gravitate towards sports that are based around fleeting opportunities and those that can take them. It's what makes them special. If Cirstea is going to win the French Open it basically has to be this year, so let's see if Sorana can own that and keep racking up the wins. This is her time. The coming wave of players in WTA headed by the New Czech Era will soon be kicking the door in, phoning taxis and taking over the bar.

Dug herself out of a hole against Rus with some solid volleying and drop shots and today a straight sets win against Grabher. 2-0 H H against Kudermetova 1 on clay. (Always bearing in mind her run in Lyon was undone by an overperforming Ukrainian motivated by world events. Here she's playing a Russian in the week of the Wimbledon ban). The seeds have tumbled in the top half so pressure on this match but I feel Rus was the potential banana skin and she'll get this done.

Unsurprisingly, cuddle my toe who beat SoranaGoat in the semi's inevitably lost the final to Pottypova, inevitably as this is dictionary definition of 'I just beat a big player syndrome', where you beat a big name player and mentally, you can't quite cope with the enormity of it all, feels like you've already played your final, and so she lost...and she was 1.5!
Sorana's time will come, the French Open beckons, I smell an Indian Summer....

One thing you touched on in the Lyon thread Mes was what it would mean to her if she got into the top 20.
That might actually be the last piece of the jigsaw. If she can achieve top 20 status in the next few months that's such a significant resistance level (her career high being #21 many moons ago) that breaching that level could trigger a breakout of even better results as momentum and self-belief fuse into irresistible force!
