It might be useful to have a thread for any news and thoughts about this reuniting of a coach/player relationship that brought slam success twice before.
It's no surprised that people were surprised by the news. Mes did a very good breakdown of Murray's issues on the tarts thread. There's also the caveat that the first time the two worked together Lendl travelled and was very hands on in analysing each match opponent by opponent (which led to Olympic Gold, the US Open and Wimbledon glory in the space of 12 months!) Murray has said he's looking for a travelling coach this time from the off. So either Lendl can't/won't travel or Muzz is hardwired to the way he 'manages' his setup.
Mouratoglou has already voiced his thoughts on the reunion, suggesting that Ivan has been excited by seeing Andy's level of motivation and that the goal is probably not a slam (probably a slam SF or QF). I thought Murray was looking better last night against Delbonis than he has for a while. Maybe he's already had a lift just knowing he has a training block with Lendl after March. It was notable also how much support he still has in Miami so there should be quite a buzz in the UK crowd when the grass season swings round.
If he somehow turns him back into a being genuinely competitive at the top level mixing with the current top players like Medvedev, then he deserves to be knighted, I wonder if it were Lendl that advised him to miss the clay as grass is his best chance of revival, we shall see, the last 12 months haven't been pretty, a bit like my recent bets.

You pointed out that he wasn't adapting his strategy to the change to his movements (being due to (a) the surgeries but also (b) er well 'getting old') and was expecting the same old tricks to work just as they did in 2012.
It seems to me that on a certain level he obviously knows this but needs to be directed to make the changes by somebody he respects.
Alex Corretja said in an interview with Eurosport
“When you had so much success with a coach then when you are in a bad moment, you always feel inside your heart, I'm going call this guy because he knows me. And that's what I feel Andy feels comfortable with Lendl because he knows he's not going to have any doubts about himself, he's not going to doubt Andy, he's just going feel like ‘OK, let's go, listen to me and you're going do whatever I say. And if you do that, maybe we have a chance’. "Andy maybe feels he's the only one that I will go for whatever he said, I will do it. And this is very important as a coach and as a player."

The thing that keeps nagging me though about this is, if this gambit is to work, surely the determination to add a travelling coach as well is the potential fly in the ointment, the weakest link?
1 - It dilutes the message, the raw input from the 8 time slam champion that the data shows he does listen to. 2 - Who, that he's going to hire as a travelling coach, has the credentials to add to the process rather than dilute it? This is the (undisputed) fourth best tennis player on the planet of the 21st century. Who's he even going to listen to? 3 - Is it a kind of safety-lock to give him the option of not listening to things that he needs to hear but doesn't want to hear?

yeah, it's true. I've never looked it up, but I'm pretty sure that on the run up to his 11 slam finals, maybe bar the one v Raonic, he' spent more hours on court than Novak/Federer by the time he met in the final, that has to be the aim to simply play more aggressive direct tennis so as not tire himself out. Having said that, he really should have won Wimbledon in 2012, the closing of the roof during the 3rd set changed the match, just so happens it was the first time it'd ever been closed during a final there, with Federer's serve without wind and sun getting in the way, was always going to be a big advantage for him.

I'm determined to be optimistic here. Murray's play in Madrid was significantly more aggressive and my theory is that it was a live trial of what he's working on with Lendl still with an eye to expending maximum effort on execution in the grass season. And that they now feel that the purpose was served (keeping a bit of 'skin in the game') and have retreated Hannibal-like to avoid injury and keep working on the masterplan.

Murray's been talking about Lendl when giving a positive assessment of his form.
I’ve been doing pretty well in practices. I know the tennis is in there, I just need to bring it out during the event now. Obviously having Ivan on my team helps. We’ve had a lot of success in the past. We know each other well. He still believes in me. There’s not loads of coaches, people out there, that have done over this last period, and he has. That definitely helps me.
For the most part, when I had had conversations with coaches, the potential of working with someone, it had come off most of the time and worked out, whereas this time round, I got turned down by a lot of coaches. That obviously was difficult to deal with because there’s obviously good coaches out there. I don’t know how many that are top-level coaches that maybe you’d really want to work with if you’re trying to win the major events.
That’s also why I’m grateful that Ivan has come back to work with me and help me try and achieve what it is I want to achieve.
The next 2 weeks are of course the entire focus of their time together so far so I'm hoping he can steer through the first couple of rounds without having to really go to the well. BUT after the scalps he took in Stuttgart it's not impossible to see a deep run here if he can avoid an early trip up and get some momentum.

I like big John Isner, but these serve bots are annoying, you get talented, creative flair players like Felix and Murray knocked out early by one dimensional one trick pony's, not good for the game, maybe they need to change the composition of the grass to stop one strike tennis. I think Murray has shown that if he can still compete at the top and with a good draw could make the second week of the US Open.

He definitely looked physically good to go for a fifth set. Probably came down to that bit of net muggery at 2-2 in the 4th. . The key is definitely keeping Lendl in the camp and yes the US Open is an interesting target as it will be the tenth year anniversary of where it all began in Slam-winning for Muzza, that extraordinary US Open final in 2012.
In the meantime both Murray and Raducanu are at a loose end for the next week so hopefully they can be cheekily crowbarred into the mixed or at least get on the alternate list.

The match he just played with Stan underlines this point you've been making for a while. He's still defaulting relentlessly to the 'death by errors' strategy that served him well when he was winning slams and Olympic titles. Which means even when he wins the first set you're expecting it to become an ordeal. The thing is... he still can still use that strategy pretty darn well! But it's clear that he 100% has to mix it up now and accept that IT'S NOT 2012 ANY MORE! C'MON MUZZ MAN!
Not just to preserve his now finite energy resources and get some easy points(!)/games(!!)/matches(!!!!!) but to give his opponent a different look, even if he just unloaded the direct aggression a teeny bit more it would create a bit of doubt. Lendl has to force this now. He's got to be the bad cop!

yep, he's going to need a good draw at the US, the young players like Sinner and Alcaraz will overcome the rope a dope tennis with their youth and fitness. Murray I would have thought would have been smart enough to change but can't see it yet.
