Sometimes fact is stranger than fiction. At this time of year the tennis world addresses a peculiar phenomenon.

Indian Wells is a tournament that many view as the 'fifth slam', certainly one of the most important events on the calendar.
The inability of any player to have won more than two titles makes the womens event unique among the Premier tournaments.

The list of players who have got stuck at two titles reads like a who's who of some of the greatest players since 1989.

Daniela Hantuchova  2002 / 2007
Steffi Graf 1994 / 1996
Maria Sharapova  2006 / 2013
Kim Clijsters 2003 / 2005
Martina Navratilova 1990 / 1991
Mary Joe Fernandez 1993 / 1995
Victoria Azarenka 2012 / 2016
Lindsay Davenport 1997 / 2000
Serena Williams 1999 / 2001

Davenport fought the hardest to beat The Curse, reaching and losing three successive finals between 2003 and 2005 but got caught in the forcefield of fate, just like those hopeless optimists before her.

Azarenka got the closest last year, coming within 5 points of defying the undefiable. And yet at the last hurdle The Curse cruelly swallowed her up like a cocoon.
She is the only player in the draw this year that has a chance of putting The Curse to bed at last.
It is a quest that has evaded so many. CAN SHE BREAK... THE CURSE OF INDIAN WELLS

* Note to the squeamish. Chill. It's just a bit of fun to lighten the mood. There's not reaaaally a curse..                        ...OR IS THERE !!?

If Vika fails again (and Badosa doesn't manage to join the 2x club) then yes Serena 2023 would be the perfect way to break the curse!

Congrats to Iga who joins the illustrious lineup of Maleeva, Seles, Hingis, Henin, Squeaky, Zvonereva, JJ, Woz, Pennetta, Halep, Vesnina, Osaka, Andreescu and Badosa as one time IW winners. (15 in 33 events)

Vika sobbed her way out so for practical purposes the gauntlet is laid down for one of Naomi, Paula or Iga to defy the elements and somehow rack up two more titles
if we hope (in our lifetimes) to end .. the Curse of Indian wells!

Till next year
