Having broken a WTA title drought of well over a decade to win in Istanbul last year, Cirstea is in superb form on hard coming in from a great run at the Aus Open. Lost (a good match) to Anett last week but she's second seed on the Lyon entry list, nobody from the top ten and nobody there she can't beat and the top seed has injury doubts.

Her number fan I'm sure wouldn't dare call this for fear of jinxing her but we know he'll have his lucky Romanian mandrakes laid out Grin
Seriously she has to have a great chance to land this one AND to kick on from there.
She just looks anyway like she's going to take off on a plasma rocket on the tour in 2022.

don't you just hate it when you press a number on your keyboard only to realise after that the Num key was offGrin

winning in France will give a psychological edge for Roland Garros, also has the potential to break her all time high ranking of 21 this year, would be nice to finish her career a top 20 player and slam winner.

First round was trickier than the score suggests. Bolkvadze was really asking questions of Sorana but then her serve fell apart.

However this round is the first test of the new reliable 'beats the players she's meant to beat' Cirstea.

The lower half of the draw is opening up like a dream so far with Cornet going out, Boulter putting out Konjuh then retiring.
Dodin conspiring to lose to a German fruitcake dressed like a Nintendo plumber.

Exactly the kind of situation where in the past Cirstea (who should be beating Voegele) would overthink the opportunity and maybe falter.
let's see..

Looks amazing so far! Almost broke first Voegele serve, convincing opening serve of her own then breaks in style.

Looking focussed, pinpoint shotmaking. lets go

Takes first set with a double break.

Voegele playing pretty well herself but Sorana's forehand pretty much unanswerable in that set.

Mes is either watching in a darkened room or hiding behind the sofa but if here he'd be saying..

SORANAGOAT GOATING

Four breaks in a row, back on serve. Sorana could do with an easy hold here.

Six breaks in a row Laugh

Back on serve thanks in part to a tannoy putting Voegele off her serve.
Some shoogly moments from Sorana but she's staying in the moment.

NID 6-3, 7-5

I liked that when the forehand went a bit shoogly in set 2 she kept faith in it to come good and stepped it up nicely to break to win.
P.s. For those who don't speak Scottish
Shoogly definition ... (Scotland) Shaky, giddy, unsteady, rickety. adjective.

1.73 straight sets pre-match was a wild ride but she got it done.
Interesting she won every match in Istanbul in straight sets.

We move on!

1.71+  again available Cirstea to beat Bondar straight sets.

If in any doubt watch back the second set against Voegele which in all honesty Cirstea had no right winning except for sheer bloodyminded determination to get it done as quickly as possible.

The last of the top 4 seeds standing, three matches away from another title.

Oh well that was quick. Thought I'd skip the commentary tonight and just enjoy Cirstea battering Bondar.

She shouldn't even be thinking of retiring, she's matured into a grade 1 competitor.

Another straight sets win. Into the Semi Finals.
We move on.

D.Y. fave against Sorana. She has been playing well this week, but Sori is a level up from what she has played earlier. Sori good value here.

I was surprised to see Yastremska favourite, currently 1.86. Her performances have been strong and clearly inspired but is her nationality in some ways being somewhat factored into that price?

You're right though. Sorana is the top 30 player, Yastremska has dropped out of the top 100 and this should be about a professional going about her business in a clearheaded way.

This match is unquestionably the messiest banana skin on the staircase to glory. But DY being favourite has pushed the straight sets Cirstea win price to 3.65+ and if it just comes down to tennis that seems the likeliest of the four set scorelines.

D.Y. has a higher ceiling out of the two, but that doesn't justify her being fave here imo.

I tried my reverse jinx, didn't work, she win Roland Garros instead, I feel like this is getting close to PEAK Sorana, 31 is the new 21.

You did your best. Sat on your hands for the whole tournament and even threw the Judas tart at your roof Shocked Grin
To no avail..

Yastremska's wild forehand at *5-6 0-30 misses the line and she's losing that first set imho.
But once she came back surviving two setpoints to win that game the fire of destiny BLAZED in her eyes and never really dimmed.

How she kept it together in the third set let alone matched Cirstea's level is hard to comprehend.
Fair play to the lass. Sorana gave it everything but the Ukranian was driven and absolutely locked on her goal.
I guess sometimes things are just beyond sport.
