While the question of whether Novak will appear in Melbourne continues to hang like an all consuming cloud over the Australian Open, the Oz media has also spent the back end of 2021 turning its attention to rising local star Olivia Gadecki's refusal to be vaccinated and thus as of time of writing exclusion from the event.
Coming off the back of the US Open when for the first time in the 21st century the final was contested by two teenagers there would have been a lot of attention paid to Gadecki as the likeliest Australian teen to make a similar run.
Australia over the last three months has had awful global media attention with govenment crackdowns, internment camps for Covid positive citizens, large protests and other things that the country will take a long time to walk back in the eyes of the open jawed watching world. You know all this.
In this toxic and emotionally heightened environment Ash Barty the country's biggest tennis star made a headline grabbing interjection about Gadecki which caught a lot of the press by surprise.
'I’ve spoken to her a little bit, but she’s an adult and she has her own career and she makes her own decisions./ That’s something I’ve said to her a lot of the time. For me, I’ve grown up and made my own decisions that I’m accountable for and she‘s done the exact same thing./ So I’m not in a position where I’m going to try and sway her or do anything, in a sense, to change her mind. I’m here as a friend, to support her and love her and whenever I see Liv, I try and catch up with her and we chat through everything, not just tennis./ Life is not all about money. In fact, that’s very low down on anyone’s priority list. So I think for Liv it’s time for her to reconnect with her family and the ones that she loved the most./ It’s the decision that she’s made. I continue to chat to her and my opinion of her changes not at all./ I’m proud that she’s made her decision for her reasons – for her right reasons – and that’s all you can do – is make the right decision for you'
Some are fans of Barty's tennis style and some are not but her willingness here to use her platform as the sport's number 1 player to not just offer something of a protective umbrella to the inevitable arrows raining in from the hysterical press but also to provide a balanced perspective and 'a slightly different take' is surely a massive credit to her.
Barty has subsequently faced some backlash on her comments. My having more interest in tennis politics than vax/covid politics, I feel that no matter where you stand on the specific issues surely she has the right to express her opinion as the game's top name? Surely she has earned the right to express views from her platform that don't just cling to the most PR friendly narrative? If not then to me it moves a little away from Covid politics and more into the gender related area where eg an army of misogynists joyfully leapt onto Serena being docked a game in the US open final in circumstances that had no direct precedence for reasons that would never have been practically appled to the other elite players Fed, Novak and Nadal. (Well that's just the way I see it.)
So on this New Years day in an uncertain world where peoples' intolerance of the views of their fellow men and women has reached a depressingly heightened level my hope is that this measured perspective from Barty sets the tone for 2022 being a time when people are more willing to listen to each other, hold converstaions and consider fresh perspectives especially as we emerge into the post pandemic light and try to put economies, relationships, travel and retail and hospitality industries back together from the current smashed up mess on the floor.
people are overestimating the extent to which the vaccines cut transmission
the AZ + AZ + Pfizer combo gives you basically
50% protection for 8 weeks
then dropping to 30%
then dropping to 0-10% (!) after twenty weeks
she could protect her parents more by staying away from them than getting vaccinated
even after getting vaxxed it isn't safe to hug your parents etc.

do these ****s in the austrlaian press understand how little protetcion they actually ahve?
the **** are probably putting their parents at risk every day with their masks and vaccines thinking everything is safe

Williams wasn't docked a game she was docked a point
In the US Open semifinal round against Kim Clijsters, Williams slammed her racket on the court after losing the first set. She was given a warning, with a potential second violation carrying a one-point penalty.
While trailing 4–6, 5–6, 15–30, Williams's second serve was called a foot fault, resulting in two match points for Clijsters. Williams gestured with her racket to the lineswoman who had made the call and yelled at her, with profanities and a threat to shove a tennis ball down the lineswoman's throat.[322] D
uring the subsequent on-court conference between the chair umpire, the lineswoman, US Open officials, and Williams, a television microphone picked up Williams saying to the lineswoman, "I didn't say I would kill you! Are you serious?"[323]
The incident resulted in Williams being penalized a point for unsportsmanlike conduct—necessitated by the earlier warning for racket abuse—meaning Clijsters won the match 6–4, 7–5.
have rafa, roger or novak ever done anything similar?

As I was referring to Serena I should have specified which specific Serena US Open controversy I was referring to.
In 2018 she was penalised a game. Which was unprecedented at that level and killed the final stone dead. The point I made about that at the time (for which a respected forumite threw the rulebook at me but then noticed himself that there was scope in the rules re: verbal abuse for the umpire to have some input) was that the umpire could made it clear that he was considering a game penalty. He chose not to do this. At that time there were only four 'elite' players on tour and only one of them was female. Could you honestly imagine an umpire making the jump to take the action he did against Roger, Novak or Rafa without some attempt to diffuse things with a bit of common sense?
Billie Jean King put it very well at the time on twitter
'When a woman is emotional, she’s “hysterical” and she’s penalized for it. When a man does the same, he’s “outspoken” & and there are no repercussions. Thank you, @serenawilliams, for calling out this double standard. More voices are needed to do the same.

Rafa roger and novak don't do the type of **** serena does
coaching from the stands, smashing a racket and abusing the umpire in the same match
and it's incumbent on the umpire to warn her she's treading on thin ice?
she threatened the umpire at the 2011 us open too,
Williams became angry with the chair umpire and made several gestures and unflattering comments toward her during the next changeover, including telling Asderaki that if the umpire ever saw Serena coming toward her, she should "look the other way".
can you imagine novak doing that?

G, the thing is I'm not an obvious candidate for supporting Williams here.
During Wimbledon 2007 I was backing one of Serena's opponents, a Slovakian player widely regarded as possibly the most talented player never to win a slam Daniela Hantuchova. Ever since she had battered Serena in the previous year's Australian Open it was clear that Serena adopted mindgames tactics to get an edge over Daniela who was very much a 'straight arrow' non-gamesmanship player. After that Wimbledon controversy I was definitely biased against Serena for a LONG time so I absolutely recognise when I see that bias in posts about her because frankly I have been there!
And that's how I registered the bias being shown when the pitchfork wielding mob bayed for her blood in 2018. Because she is an expressive player, it's just the way she is just as expressive players (John McEnroe, Nick Kyrgios etc) have been just who they are and this has largely been accepted in their respective eras and ontheirtour.
There is literally no precedent for a player being docked a game at that level (business end of a slam) and this was for being EXPRESSIVE, with the rules allowing the umpire scope to handle matters in a sensible fashion especially as
(1) with no historical precedent Serena could not reasonably assume a game penalty was on the cards (2) being expressive cannot be perceived on a level of gamesmanship comparable to the use of MTOs by many players now, or Djokovic's feigning fatigue against Murray in the Aus Open SF, or even Serena's mindgames against Hantuchova. NONE OF WHICH WAS SIMILARLY PENALISED
It is only possible to end up justifying what happened by reverse engineering using the rulebook to reach the desired conclusion from a perspective of bias! Often completely uncomscious / unintentional

I'm going to level with you here. Part of this for me is a process of adopting a philosophy called the Gurdjeffian system/approach to life, part of which involves taking the opposite position from my own default biases and positions.
So for me to take Serena's position after the outright Machiavellian stunts she pulled to avoid a deserved loss against Daniela is a kind of personal improvement therapy, sort of.
And in this I've found that perceiving bias subtleties can be a tricky business but once starting to recognise the patterns and nuances have started to see it periodically.
So to bring this back to the Barty comments, to use the obvious direct comparison, far more emotional comments coming from the Djokovic camp about Novak's position and vax status were generally being reported directly without 'colouring'
Media reporting on Barty's comments about Gadecki's position and vax status have used colouring. 'Ashleigh Barty faces criticism..', 'Ash barty gone 'overboard' in support...' etc rather than just relaying the comments themselves.
It's like an obscure language suddenly revealed to which I admit I was previously oblivious
