Maybe with Emma's success they will add a 5th Slam and place it in China for financial and marketing purposes.

The way she played at the US Open, you'd say 10+ is feasible, & she'll be pushing for world no1 in next few years. Appreciate her ambition but a little surprised she ditched her coach who obviously did a great job to get her playing the way she did at Flushing Meadow. Women's game has incredible strength in depth but she's definitely not a Kenin or Wozniacki, a 1-Slam wonder, as long as she stays healthy, trains hard, is well mentored, and gets the coaching situation sorted out.

A couple of issues.

One concern is 'raging bull syndrome'. Remember in that movie when Jake LaMotta vicously beats up Tony Janiro and the gangster utters the famous line 'he ain't so pretty now'. In the following tournaments Sasnovich and Kostyuk seemed to rise up a level to take Emma out and then didn't seem anything like as motivated in their next rounds. Emma's New York Fairy story was amazing but Kostyuk probably gave fairly accurate voice to a lot of players when she talked about how she'd felt seeing Emma (and Leylah) jump ahead of their place in the perceived order. She has made herself a target.

Also. The level of risktaking and aggression she pulled out at the US open (in particular the third round through to the QF) was her ace in the pack, but will she be able/willing to commit to both of those as an established superstar with the associated pressures?

So I can see some frustrations ahead but I think she'll end up with 1-2 hard court slams and one wimbledon.

At least 5. More conservative estimate as not been impressed with some of her decisions post-US Open.

mate

5 would be 1 a year for the next 5 years. is she really going to win 1/4 of the grand slams?

or 1 every 2 years for 10 years, if she has an unsually long career at the top. is that likely either?

She has never played a match on clay, so there's a quarter of the majors gone for the foreseeable. Can't see her developing her clay game ranked where she is either.

I reckon she needs to have an awful year and lose the bulk of her ranking points and then go back to where she should have started from and develop her tour experience and game from the level most young players do. Going to be very hard to do that from the top 20 level and she's going to be there until the USO at least.

The premature adulation after the US open was inevitable I suppose. I enjoyed watching her play there and hoped that she would progress but to give her the Sports Personality and other awards based on basically 3 good results was ridiculous. I hope she does win another major but I would not put any money on it.
Report mafeking January 14, 2022 1:31 PM GMT
think you've gotta give her the whole of this year at least before judging her properly. she's not really been on tour on a regular basis yet and obviously it's not gone well at all in limited matches since the us open

none of the other recent shock winners have gone even remotely close to following up in another slam yet and she has plenty of time on her side

tie breaker - Wimbledon
Report Insideshrewdie August 31, 2022 5:06 PM BST
Good question BDJ.  I thought her win last year was a similar kind of situation to Justin Rose at Birkdale in 1998 aged 18 yrs.  Rose made some bad decisions (or his agents) he went to Dutch Open the very next week ...proceeded to miss 22 cuts in a row.  Raducanu needs a great team in order to win another slam.  Firstly a great coach and then a strong team around her.  Rose took a long time to find his feet and win the US Open eventually...... If she gets all of that she can win 5 majors...if she misses on coach and team front she will end up with just one US Open....IMO

It's like asking how long is a piece of string.

There are so many variables it doesn't make much sense to put a number on it.

18 months ago, next to nobody had heard of Raducanu, who will emerge next year, or the year after, or the year after. Swiatek morphed into Swiatek 2.0 suddenly winning nearly 40 matches in a row, Barty inexplicable retired, we've had dozen or so first time winners in recent years, injuries, Pandemic's etc.

When Abramovic came to Chelsea 20 years ago people said they'll dominate for decades, they've won 20% of the league titles since.

It's good to put a number on it for a bit of fun, but nobody can really do with any conviction or confidence, the more prevalent question is simply as follows, does she have the minerals and the raw materials to at least be competing for grand slam titles, yes as she's proven, whereas on the other hand, we all knew that the likes of Watson never did, and a million other failed LTA products. Raducanu has the potential to make the last 4 of all slams next year, I wouldn't back that, but ability wise, in theory, is not unrealistic which is the main point.

When it comes to outright predictions, you can look at a young player and know whether she has those raw materials to win a slam in the future, but futile putting actual numbers on it, I've probably done it in the past as a bit of fun but would never put money on x player winning x slams by x date.
Report Wesdag September 1, 2022 4:59 PM BST
Probably would be a better question ask is whether she'll win more than 2 slams.

I'd say no.

2023, it's gonner be her year.
Report Gagging September 24, 2022 11:35 AM BST
I'm staggered by how many different sporting injuries she has experienced this past year or so, and today a gluteal strain.  The variety and frequency of these - so surprising for one so young and who seems so athletic with an ideal build - suggests to me she doesnt need a coach so much as an experienced sports physio to take charge of her presumed lack of physical preparedness. Her mental skills and resilience and ability to vary her game are secondary to this  at this time but her tennis groundplay has already been shown to be capable of beating any female tennis player. When and if she gets a strong team around her that she trusts, slams will come - even majors  but for now the aim should be to enhance her pjysical stamina and readiness so these preventable but crucial strains and  injuries are put behind her. It's not as she's in the front row ofa scrum taking heavy hits during her games!
Report mesmerised September 24, 2022 12:34 PM BST
yes, well said, she's been written off as a flash in the pan when the reality is she's had to deal with all those injuries, newfound fame, pressure and expectation from herself, sponsors and fans alike, along with starting the year on the comeback trail from covid, she should be judged properly when she gets a long run of injury free tournaments.
Report Gagging September 24, 2022 1:34 PM BST
Agreed, mesmerised-  but her preparation appears amateur - she's a multi-million pound product and deserves much better handling than she's evidently receiving. Resilience, but also handling how to peak her performances with adequate rest periods [and no doubt a social and love life]  will be critical on her scehduled tennis circuit!
