Woohoo, tennis is back! At least for a little over a week or so. Then a 10 day break before Aussie Open and from then on hopefully we will have tennis all year long.
Abu Dhabi has a strong field (Sabalenka, KaPlis, Kenin, Svitfit etc). ATP a bit muggy but at least we have tennis.
Dasha 2 vs Qualifier Wang starts us off tomorrow at 6 am UKT, 7 am CET. See you for that!

Per ATP, Christian Harrison was fined $3,000 for not doing his on-court interview after his second round win in Delray Beach (refusing because it required his wearing a mask).

Harrison wore the mask and did the interview today after his quarterfinal win so as not to lose more $.

Report n88uk January 12, 2021 1:57 AM GMT
Ah the classic. Seems kinda weird to me btw. Qualifying started a few days ago, why wouldn't your withdraw a few days ago if you knew you weren't playing anyway, as this just puts an auto LL in the draw with the way it works I think.
Report n88uk January 12, 2021 2:02 AM GMT
Maybe the American mugs can host their own mug tourney during AO.

It's also a big commitment really. Like I saw a thing how players who don't qualify for AO are pretty much stuffed for first few months. There are no ATP tournaments until like 22nd Feb, I think it's 1st March for women as they are doing events in Australia after AO, so if you don't go for whatever reason you have no events for 2 months basically.
Report n88uk January 12, 2021 2:05 AM GMT
And of course with everything, it could all go belly up too. Better to be in events you know are happening once there, than 2 months is a long time for events to be called off. I think this is even more true for men too, as women mostly go to Middle East, but ATP is going to likes of Montpellier, Marseille, and Rotterdam. No way are they locks to even happen with how things are in Europe.
Report SamuelMertensBertens January 12, 2021 2:05 AM GMT
maybe not during, but any of next week would have been a possibility with the likes of Isner, Korda, Karlovic and there must be other Delray Beach players whose ranking isn't good enough for main draw or who doesn't wanna go.
Report n88uk January 12, 2021 2:06 AM GMT
There's a random WTA event in Lyon too, but at least it's not their bigger events.
Report SamuelMertensBertens January 12, 2021 2:07 AM GMT
but probably a bit late for that now. And not sure there's much interest for hosting ATP events in this climate. Delray was already on the calendar and just moved their spot from Feb to January.
Report n88uk January 12, 2021 2:10 AM GMT
There's a lot of random events for you to totally burn yourself out in too if there's going to be that player who plays the total crazy schedule. As schedules aren't formatted as well as normally for obvious reasons, so you can end up doing random things like going Aus, Europe, Middle East, Europe, America in the space of about 6 weeks. Anyone doing that asking for trouble down the line probs.
Report n88uk January 12, 2021 2:11 AM GMT
ATP probs have to help fund events in some fashion right now, so why would they bother putting on mug US event really.
Report n88uk January 12, 2021 2:12 AM GMT
It's funny how normally IW-Miami looks such a cornerstone but with IW removed, Miami looks kind of odd in the calendars as you basically go to America for it and it only. There is Charleston after, but still, not a lot.
Report SamuelMertensBertens January 12, 2021 2:15 AM GMT
To be honest, while I'm happy to see Aussie Open go ahead as a fan and for betting purposes, not sure it's a good idea considering Australia's low numbers and the lack of judgment shown by many ATP players. Not sure if it would have been possible to sort schedule wise, but I would have quite liked a 2021 december event followed by a Jan 2022 event like in 1976-77. Could have done that with three weeks in between to ensure players get some rest between events.
Report n88uk January 12, 2021 2:16 AM GMT
I think ultimately there will be a lot of opportunities for players to capitalise on weak fields. There's no way all these 500 events on every continent around the world will all have strong fields. Even this week Abu Dhabi wasn't that strong, but I think it will get a lot worse for some of these. I kind of wonder who is going to hang around in Aus for a 500 after AO, like if you lose early you probs just want to head home/to Middle East for Doha-Dubai, and if you go deep you're going to have played a crapload of tennis. I feel like whatever field signs up for this is guaranteed to get an absolute crap ton of withdrawals.

More easy points for Barty Cry
Report n88uk January 12, 2021 2:18 AM GMT
I think it's fine. It will be be very hard for there to be any scandals under the rules, of which it will be hard to break and get away with I imagine. Plus you are literally risking getting deported if you do, so you've got to be a huge mug to do so.

Ultimately it's happening cos of money anyway, Aus Open brings a lot of money into Melbourne, they lose a gazillion if it doesn't happen. They also probs see it as a prestige thing of they look bad if it doesn't happen after 2 slams already did.
Report SamuelMertensBertens January 12, 2021 2:20 AM GMT
ok, didn't know punishment was that severe. That's good. Was worrying there would be fines only, which of course has no effect on rich athletes.
Report n88uk January 12, 2021 2:21 AM GMT
Lol true, I forgot about her. Supposedly her points will fall off though soon, at least that's the plan, they better not change it.

Is Barty really not gonna go back on tour this year, I find it a little strange really, like as a side note her being 2nd fav for AO seems horrific to me. I refuse to believe not playing tennis for a year doesn't hurt your game significantly.
Report n88uk January 12, 2021 2:22 AM GMT
Like by logic Barty was using last year she would basically not play again this year, as I really doubt things are back to normal before the very end of the year, but giving up 2 years of your career seems a lot.

Don't think she's said anything, nothing has changed since end of last year, albeit her points might start coming off. But if her reasons for not playing are the truth then she's still not going to be comfortable playing. Well actually I think it's more because it's a lot of effort for her to play as she has to quarantine for 2 weeks on return to Aus every time she returns, and that rule definitely isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Like I say though there has to come a point as professional tennis player that you actually play again surely. Taking all this time off cannot be good for her career. She hasn't even played any of the mug Aus stuff to my knowledge, so what is she doing to keep remotely match sharp?

Britain's Francesca Jones overcame a "wee mental breakdown" because of cuts on her fingers to qualify for a Grand Slam for the first time.

The 20-year-old booked a place at the Australian Open with a crushing 6-0 6-1 victory over China's Lu Jiajing in the final round of qualifying in Dubai.

Jones - who has a rare genetic condition that means she was born with three fingers and a thumb on each hand, three toes on her right foot and four toes on her left - put in a devastating display to win in just 61 minutes.
