Not surprised the market has moved for Bertens. Unless she is a spent force after last week she wins. Kontaveit just treading water and tactically inept far too often. Just crazy how she will hit big shots from the baseline but not follow them in. Why would you want to win the point three or four times? Doesn't move that well and body language often poor.

I wonder if Halep would have discovered her 'injury' if the US Open wasn't just around the corner?
Report wisewords August 21, 2018 4:54 PM BST
Halep's having a rest dd, that's for sure.
Report wisewords August 21, 2018 4:59 PM BST
And now Bertens has withdrawn due to illness. Kontaveit now plays lucky loser Pauline Parmentier
Report n88uk August 21, 2018 5:12 PM BST
Obviously Halep isn't actually injured.

Konta withdraws.

All that analysis for nothing but you can probably take that forward into most Kontaveit matches.

That was a dreadful match - 100+ unforced errors between the pair of them. The sort of match that Kontaveit should be looking to take out 6-2 6-2 and that is probably being kind to Parmentier.

Good win for Bencic but it was the kind of match that could have gone either way. She is striking the ball pretty well which makes her defeat by Yastremska of some note. Will be interesting to see how Yastremska gets on against Goerges. I haven't seen enough to warrant any bets but fair chance she will improve considerably on her current ranking.

Do players throw matches in Tennis? Just watch the replay of the last querry match thats just finished for some pointers

Didn't see much of the match but seemed to be a lot of negativity towards Sabalenka in the commentary box.

First and foremost she has turned up for this tournament and not found an 'injury' and that should be applauded. Secondly, she has beaten a higher ranked player, albeit in a match that she could have taken out earlier.

Gavrilova is something of a poor man's Halep and it is perhaps significant that Sabalenka has now struggled twice with this type of opponent. Add in Gavrilova can be feisty/annoying and it was probably just good to get the win.

If she is to progress further clearly 45% first serves and only 5 aces in three sets needs to be improved on.

Bencic is striking the ball well but doesn't move anywhere near as well as Gavrilova. I would like to see a Sabalenka win but after another long match it is difficult to be certain of the outcome.

Another poor defeat for Kontaveit. I noticed Sears made reference (as I did) to her body language. He has a lot of work to do.

Much more comfortable for Sabalenka than expected, albeit from 3-3 0-40. Bencic fell away very badly.

Hard to believe the winner doesn't come from Sabalenka v Goerges. The other two are playing for the bookmakers.

I would like Sabalenka but Goerges probably a slight favourite. It appears she is still improving and controlling the power a lot better these days.

Not at her best but you can't argue with downing another top tenner and a big plus it didn't drag out to three sets.

Was talking about her first title afterwards but needs to be careful and maintain her focus. Opponent very fortunate with two retirements but the match needs to be won.
Report DStyle August 25, 2018 8:35 PM BST
feck me, never realised that sabalenka was coached by that dirty fecker tursunov.

far too much talent for him.
Report differentdrum August 25, 2018 11:38 PM BST
Great week for Sabalenka ending with probably her most solid performance. Relief to get it done in two as Suarez Navarro played a very good second set and was a fraction away from leading 5-4.

Sabalenka remains a big price for US Open purely because of the amount of tennis she has played over the last two weeks. At her best she can beat anyone in the draw. Effectively, she is already a top 10 player.

It is a shame we will never see a peak form Sabalenka against a peak form Williams. At her best Azarenka was just about the only player to put it up to Williams and Sabalenka has more weapons than Azarenka ever did. Even now I suspect Williams is itching to put the youngster back in her box.
Report differentdrum August 26, 2018 11:06 AM BST
Just looked at Sabalenka's draw and had a little on the outright. The first two rounds shouldn't present much of a problem. If she keeps winning that to a certain extent will balance the tiredness. You know she is going to give 100% and unlike most of the field she does have the required ability to win the tournament.
