The Happy Slam is here. While some names are back compared to the US Open, we still have several big names missing. You can find the draws here https://ausopen.com/draws?events=2446&player= (women) and here https://ausopen.com/draws (men). It has been raining in Melbourne during qualies and forecasts says we will have some more rain during the upcoming week.
These threads are weekly threads with just tennis talk: match talk, past, current or upcoming events in tennis etc. Spamming (including muggy politics talk) and general sports talk can be done elsewhere such as the usual megathreads, current one is called It's time for S/OT 6.

One of the sweetest sites I've seen in Tennis was when Marin Safin left Frauderer on his backside at match point in the 2005 Australian Open Semi-Final, and then Federer trudging to the net to shake hands barely able to look him the eye, as if to say "you b******".

Happy days.

Roger absolutely brilliant , well played and well deserved Sir
Report n88uk January 28, 2018 12:28 PM GMT
There's no way he retires while still winning grand slams imo.

There's another perspective that if he retires he can easily be handing the keys to someone (Nadal) to overtake his records, why do that when you are still winning.

Federer is the best player right now, I just don't see why he'd retire in such a position, he can set records that are out of this world for anyone to try and catch.
Report n88uk January 28, 2018 12:34 PM GMT
The players that did retire after winning slams were virtually finished outside winning those slams and it was the last hurrah, but with Federer it isn't. Off of clay he's the clear favourite to win every event, on the basis of this event, this year already looks like it will be similar to last year.

I'm curious if he will turn up on clay this year.

It all depends upon the return of Djokovic, and Nadal can beat him at the US Open.

If Djokovic comes back to his best, it's a no contest.

Report aaronh January 28, 2018 12:53 PM GMT
no point screwing his knees up and losing to some mug every year really
Report mesmerised January 28, 2018 12:59 PM GMT
he hasn't retired from matches at Wimbledon because of injury it's just that he can't play matches there the way he used to because of his knees, a lot of the losses he has had to mugs, have at least been close, if he was being pummelled it might be another question, but you have to be in it to win it.

Federer on the other hand, is basically a part time player these days, gives himself a huge advantage to win the other slams.

She's travelling supposedly, doesn't mean will play. I can almost smell play a match and withdraw tbh.

If there's outright odds up there has to be value in opposing her surely as she will be fav.

Report n88uk January 28, 2018 1:03 PM GMT
I think Federer will play RG.

I think you will be under pressure from the ITF/individual slams to not just no show slams for the rest of your career as they don't want to set precedents like this where players just sac off their weakest slam.

Thing is if Federer actually played the French he would be 2nd fav anyway, it seems a little weird to give that up, in sense he only really needs Nadal to falter and he's back to clear fav again. Though he spoke last year how he felt a big confidence thing vs Nadal was not playing him on clay.

And btw, let's not forget there are only 3 clay masters events and Monte Carlo I think is not even mandatory, there are 6 hard court masters and the WTF have always been indoor hard.

The tour is clearly tailored to favour one man, they've never considered changing it.

The WTF should at least alternate between the two, does not matter if it comes off of the back of the indoor events, it would be the same for everyone regardless.

If he thinks it does him more harm than good, he will skip clay season again imo. And rightfully so. There's a reason his body is holding up whereas his main opponents are breaking down five years younger. And that's smart scheduling, as well as having a playing style that's less taxing to your body. Don't think he'll give into pressure from ITF/Roland Garros.

Report Fatslogger January 28, 2018 9:45 PM GMT
May depend on whether he cares about the number 1 ranking, which he doesn't seem to that much.  If it looks like it's in sight he might go for the huge jump in ranking points even getting to say the semis would provide, by comparison with not having played it at all last season. Problem for him is that he's relatively unlikely to do well at the French anyway, even more so if he doesn't warm up with another clay event or two and then he's flogging himself harder than he wants to or should do, probably. After all, he's got this selfish desire to continue winning grand slams, mostly to upset mesmerised, it seems from this thread.
