Masters 1000 in Shanghai for the men.

3 internationals for the women. Not too much going on at these now that Garcia withdrew from Tianjin. Hong Kong has strongest field with Svitolina, Venus, Wozniacki. Tianjin has Sharapova and Kvitova at opposite halves, and Linz is pretty poor by Linz standards.

Federer has been backed in a lot really but does Del Potro's injury which didn't sound that bad in reports really improve his chances that much? Like if Del Potro was that weakened he surely just wouldn't have been playing in the first place.

Report n88uk October 14, 2017 5:08 PM BST
I have more info since I posted that, but I still don't really see how she will play Fed Cup off no matches. Can you even justify it? Though it might be political as they are using her heavily to advertise it even though they must have full knowledge what's going on.

Supposedly all that happened Oct 12th is Billy's side gave their stuff to the hearing and that's it, next date is Monday Oct 16th.

Only thing that doesn't make sense to me is normally you'd know if it's gonna be like that, ie. why did she ever think Lux was possible then. You'd surely know the setup if it's like that, but I don't know, no information of what is actually going on.
Report n88uk October 14, 2017 5:11 PM BST
Like the stuff about a decision will be made Oct 12th whether she plays Luxembourg makes it sound like a decision was going to be made, but the above stuff makes it sounds like that was never going to happen.

Thing is Sabalenka is now in a final. Sasnovich is in terrible form, but was the player that pretty much got them there. If Vika just come in on nothing it feels political reasons of they want her to play the tie (I read some article about a lot of VIPs going or something), because there is no way you can realistically expect her to come in and dominate the tie which is really what they need.
Report mesmerised October 14, 2017 5:11 PM BST
So Belarus are going to rely on Sabalenka and Sasnovich as they're singles players
Report n88uk October 14, 2017 5:15 PM BST
They don't have any real options. Problem is hypothetically if Vika came in too I bet it would be for Sabalenka too, and on form that is totally the wrong decision really.

This continual dates thing does make me thing maybe Vika's case will be settled soon, as I was expecting it to drag before that tbh, but I really don't know if she will even want to play on no matches. Like she could easily do herself no justice if she played, do you even want to do that in front of your home crowd expecting you to win?
Report mesmerised October 14, 2017 5:24 PM BST
The Lure of winning the Fed Cup may tempt her. Something to add to the CV.

I think too much is made of Fed's new backhand as the reason for the turnaround in his form v Nadal. If anything it his serving that's improved the most.
But really it comes down to the fact that his game has not deteriorated with age the same way Nadal's has. Rafa has had a great season but talk of him being back to his best are well wide of the mark. You just have to marvel at how Fed has managed to maintain his level (fitness, condition, movement/speed, shot making, shot selection, court positioning, etc) at his age.
Report The Bhoys October 15, 2017 12:18 PM BST
I agree plat, people talking about nadal being better than ever is nonsense, he played brilliant at roland garros but never net, murray, fed or novak, novak and murray have been of the pace all year, federers backhand has improved immensly, whcih takes away nadals free points on it but your right his serve today was perfect nadal never had a sniff
Report n88uk October 15, 2017 12:34 PM BST
Fed's backhand strategy and just how he handles it has defo improved immensely. Traditionally Nadal could just hit heavy top spin cross court into Fed's backhand from his forehand and win about 70% of points this way. Fed has given up slicing which doesn't work vs Nadal and is now drilling it flat cross court and down the line and Nadal can't answer it.

Nadal hasn't effectively responded to this pattern of play at all since Australia.
Report The Bhoys October 15, 2017 1:03 PM BST
Feds tactics have improved but the courts also suit him which hes played rafa on, indoors today was always guna be tough to win

No way is Nadal back to his best on clay. But he didn't have to be, to win RG this year.
Report mesmerised October 16, 2017 5:28 PM BST
course he was, won 51 out of 55 full sets over the clay court season, dropped just 35 games at the French Open, his best since 2008 where he dropped 41, and the best since Borg in the early 70's, dropped just 22 games in the first 5 matches, a record since 5 set matches were introduced.  His playing style may not be as swashbuckling, but he is even more effective than he's ever been.
Report The Bhoys October 16, 2017 5:46 PM BST
The field was weak tho mes, no murray, novak or federer ok murray and federer wudnt have counted but novak wud have if peak fitness, who did he really beat, thiem?
Report mesmerised October 16, 2017 6:12 PM BST
he's beaten Djokovic 6 times from 7 matches at Roland Garros  including years in which Novak was winning slams and World Number 1 so whilst he would have lost more games, the way Nadal had been playing he would have still been favourite and in all likeliness won, the average rank of players he beat this year at the FO was 29, compared that to the 5 previous times he won FO and it was 2014 = 71.3, 2013 = 22, 2012 = 54.4, 2011 = 51.9, 2010 =116.5, so the overall standard compared to previous years was still high, beat two top 10 players. Federer has never been a problem for him on clay which is why he skipped the clay court season, Murray tbh would not have stood a chance against a Nadal at 75 %.
