It's Aussie Open time! The plan is for this to be a weekly thread with just tennis talk: match talk, current events in tennis etc. Spamming (including muggy politics talk) and other sports talk can be done elsewhere such as the usual megathreads, current one is called Spam/OT thread. Good luck with this tournament and remember: #sleepisfortheweak

it's quite easy:
tennis talk thread: only tennis talk
spam/ot thread: same as old megafreds, everything goes including tennis

match freds are kind of dead these days, but are done for big matches, so for these you get the rare occurence of tennis discussion being divided into multiple threads.

since this phorum is not moderated, it's hard to get it to work perfectly, but I think it's an improvement over what it was like before.

so final thoughts on the Aussie Open? For me men's was GOAT (several 5 set thrillers including both SF's and Final and my fave player winning the whole thing) and women's was dissappointing with Venus's and MLB's runs the only highlights.
Report caramba January 29, 2017 1:03 PM GMT
I suppose CoCo was a bright spot too, but I'm sure she'll be back to mugging soon.
Report n88uk January 29, 2017 1:10 PM GMT
CoCo will do nothing. Just go back to usual level.
Report mesmerised January 29, 2017 1:11 PM GMT

Report n88uk January 29, 2017 1:12 PM GMT
The men's events was very good. The women's event not so much. And as you know I'm not someone to blindly say that. But there was nothing in the women's side really. It was obvious Serena would stroll to the title after the semi's, and there were no good match ups and few good matches in the end.

Men's event benefited from Nadal and Federer making final and constantly involved in 5 setters. Quality doesn't even necessarily have to be top notch for it to be interesting. Eg. I wouldn't say today was anywhere near highest quality, was it interesting though? Yes. And that's a quality Murray vs Djoko finals often lack. They can go 5, but you aren't really enthralled into the match.
Report n88uk January 29, 2017 1:13 PM GMT
Even Venus run, fairytale as it was, she played pretty much nobody to do it. If she'd been knocking off top players might have been more fairytale, but I didn't think her level was really that high, just she had the right draw to make the run.

Great tournament and Roger immense today. The real story was Dimitrov, very consistent and seems to have added the focus and tenacity now to be a multiple slam winner, and soon.
Report n88uk January 29, 2017 1:21 PM GMT
Yer that's true. But the problem is it turns into like who is the lucky dip that ends up in the section this draw.
Report mesmerised January 29, 2017 1:21 PM GMT
Even when Azarenka, Screamer and BIg Foot are back, Serena will still dominate them, Only when she retires will it return to being competitive, which will probably make it look better.
Report n88uk January 29, 2017 1:22 PM GMT
It's already competitive beyond Serena, problem is it's too competitive.
Report n88uk January 29, 2017 1:23 PM GMT
Serena won't dominate for much longer. Serena wasn't even that outstanding here. She didn't have to be, none of her opposition really tested her. You don't know if she had another gear to go to (something she definitely lacked through most of last year) because it was never needed. This is because players aren't performing.

Serena won't dominate for much longer

Im sure you said this years ago.

but I'm talking about what matters, winning the slams, that's not really competitive.
Report n88uk January 29, 2017 1:24 PM GMT
Serena won 1 last year? That's not dominating the slams is it.
Report mesmerised January 29, 2017 1:25 PM GMT
Well last few years as a whole, there is nobody that has dominated her
Report n88uk January 29, 2017 1:27 PM GMT
Yer but she's clearly waning now. It's just she was that much better than everybody in the first place.
Report n88uk January 29, 2017 1:28 PM GMT
Serena wasn't even tested this AO, but she was there to be tested a number of times, her opponents just didn't bring it to the court. It's hard to say if any of her opponents really thought they could win. She basically front run every match. Konta went up a break in the 2nd, but it was more Serena mugging than Konta doing anything special.

Agreed about Grigor. Hope he can keep it up. Even in the defeat against Rafa, he showed qualities I hadn't seen from him before.

Report mesmerised January 29, 2017 1:31 PM GMT
What is clear about her waning, she's only winning in 3rd gear because none of the players in her way can even get past that, that doesn't mean she's on the way down it means she doesn't even need to step up, which players are going to start dominating her, I can only see Muguruza in the long term and that's if they play a few times on clay.

that's been asked for about 5 years, I think her next goal will be to win 25, surpass Margeret Court, not that that record is meaningful in real terms, but it's probably her goal.

No idea how her body actually feels but she is moving well enough so who knows.

From tennisforum

Mertens signalled to the chair that she wanted a MTO, Martincova panicked, thought French Open qualifying was up next and threw her racquet at the umpire to be defaulted before Mertens could retire. Then Mertens said works every time, which started a brawl between the respective teams. True story.
