Thought this could be worth a try for the new season. The plan is for this to be a weekly thread with just tennis talk: match talk, current events in tennis etc. Spamming (including muggy politics talk) and other sports talk can be done elsewhere such as the usual megathreads. I'm not sure we have enough posters here to make this work, but let's see how it goes. I know we have contributors to this tennis phorum that don't post much these days because of all the spamming in the megathreads but on the other hand match threads don't really work these days so I figured a thread like this could be a good comprimise which will hopefully encourage those posters to post. If these tennis threads work, we can continue with them, if not we don't.

I'm thinking of backing Tomic (v Ferrer) and laying Bouchard (v Shelby)  in their 1st round matches tomorrow. Thoughts ?

Seems silly to have McHale fave over Errani.

Nice to not have to deal with the muggy Australian wallet this year. Hopefully liquidity will improve as a result.

Aiava dropped 8 games in 3 Q matches to beat Crawford (who was defending SF), Martinez Sanchez and Witthoeft. At 16 years old...

yeah, those are some super impressive scorelines. one result like that could be explained by mugging by the opponent but not three.

Aaron digged up some info. Last year she lost to Ula in Q 6-0, 6-1. Seems she might have improved.

Cool that she'll be in the main draw of AO.

I'm shocked at the blatant racism of that comment. Very unlike Siggy.

Maybe Ula was really good then. Aiava's results here seem weird. She played some ITFs during the last few months and didn't exactly rock them. To smash these reasonable players in qualies now is surprising.

Destanee Aiava will make history next month in Melbourne when she competes in the Australian Open. At only age 16, she will be the first person born in this century to compete in a Grand Slam.

speaking of stats, all previous Shelby vs Genie matches (h2h is 2-0) have had Shelby winning set 1, Genie winning set 2 and Shelby winning set 3.

She's apparently coached by Andrea Stoltenberg (nee Strnadova, former tennis pro, WTA most impressive newcomer 1991 and wife of Jason Stoltenberg (coach of young-ish Hewitt 2001-2003)
