It misleads a lot of people. It's who has the most market potential left in them.
Serena and Sharapova were listed last year (and maybe Ivanovic too, I can't remember), but what they are saying is that Serena and Sharapova are pretty much at their peak, and unlikely to be earning any more off the court.
Even on WTA players Wozniacki seems a bit sketchy.
@wisewords same reason as Serena and Sharapova. Pretty much at her peak. Age means she will likely retire relatively soon.

Bear in mind that someone like Serena if you click buy button, she's ultra expensive, will you see any return on your investment (they're implying no).
Will Serena's off court earnings likely increase between now and the end of her career. I doubt it.

I actually though last years list was reasonably good from memory. This years list looks worse.

Wozniacki was the 4th highest earner off the court through June 2012-June 2013. She isn't delivering anywhere near those results, and is talking of retiring.
