Its crap really, these MTO are invariably after the player has lost a game - even though they looked perfectly ok during the game - just missed a few points. Taking momentum away from opponent is often the real motivation
Market is still only 1.16 because there is a high chance Aza breaks next game. Stephens has held once all match. So I can understand the price really. I'm expecting a break. If it doesn't come expect Aza to drift out big time.
Very very good medical time out from Vika, she was way to tight there.

She looked more distressed than injured though. However you've got to feel she will find it easier to break serve than hold serve. She's been finding it easier to break serve all match.

Looks more stressed than anything to me - part of any sport - just cant walk off. If they weren't allowed to do this, players would have to devise ways to get through it; again like any sport.

I'm not surprised it goes on Harry. It's obvious tactical timeouts have gone on over the years. I'm more surprised she basically openly admitted as such. The problem they have is unless you stop MTO's (never going to happen in todays age of health and safety) it's very hard to actually stop tactical MTO's, because how do you deem one as such?
Might be a negative "fall-out" because of this for Azarenka. At least she told the truth - but in a Grand Slam semi-final a player admitting in a crucial stage she went off for mental/stress/nervous reasons - doesn't reflect well on the sport - the whole thing needs to tightened-up.

I know what Aza did is not right and I don't condone it at all. Playing Devil's Advocate here: with what was at stake she bent the rules in her favour in order to win. She fought every which way she could to win. This is all a consequence of her winner's mentality. It was unsporting and against the spirit of sportsmanship but who cares? she wins, she will go down in history as Oz champ 2013 most likely and people will forget the MTO. "History is written by the victors" - Winston Churchill.

The Williams sisters have done this type of thing many times. If they prevented a player from taking an injury break until before their own serve, as I thought they were supposed to, then this situation wouldn't happen.

its a BS rule and always has been. Its for the crowd and no other reason. Name any other non team sport where you are required to outplay, outwit and physically wear down an opponent and where if the battle gets too tough for you, that you can raise the white flag and have a break or get medical assistance. If i as a player Id exploit it to. why not. winning is about using all the tools at your disposal. the WTA and ATP provide this tool for players so are to blame.
IMO should only be able to call a timeout of any sort before a return game, and you immediately forfeit that return game.

I watched Braveheart, starring my favourite actor of all time Mel Gibson, the other day and I gotta say those Scots are one heck of an unwashed and vile bunch.
Long hair on guys is awesome and super sexy, but please not like that. Use some freaking conditioner or at the very least a brush. Even nowadays you see that way too often. If you grow your hair out as a guy, please take care of it.
But back to Braveheart: How come the other Scots followed him and accepted him as on of their leaders? Being called Wallace, and not McWallace, he was clearly someone of Welsh descent (I looked this up on Wikipedia) instead of being a proper Scot.
There must be a good reason for a well respected video game like "Red Dead Redemption" containing the quote "My pa always told me to never trust a Welshman, and he got his throat slit by one, so he should know."
As for Azarenka: Players should be allowed to call the trainer at any time, but if the trainer diagnoses that it's not something that will kill the player within the next few points the umpire and trainer should have the discretion to make the player wait until it's his turn to serve.
I do actually think they have that discretion (or at least had it at one point in ATP tournaments), that right is just not exercised very often (would you exercise it as a trainer/umpire against the people who run the show or would you simply get on with it and treat the player?). Still, Lu was once denied a medical timeout before Hewitt was about to serve.
And as for that on-court interview? Azarenka maintains that she misunderstood the line of questioning. The world No.1 believed she was being asked about her difficulties closing out the match, not about her health.
“All the nerves that I was talking about, what was misunderstood, I was talking about I never felt that way in my life. I couldn’t understand what was going on … I just couldn’t fully breathe. It was hurting every time I breathed and it was really freaking me out.

Azarenka has not had a chance to speak to the other player involved, Stephens, but she plans to get in contact with her.
“I haven’t spoken to her after that but I am going to send her a message. I don’t feel that she took it the bad way because she was really nice in her press conference and we are great between us.
“It’s not going to cause any problems because it was not intentional and she didn’t take it personal and so that’s great from her.
