Report jimmy69 September 8, 2011 9:33 AM BST
Why should they have a roof? It's supposed to be an outdoor tournament.
Report ;[p September 8, 2011 9:42 AM BST
so why they not playing they should play then
Report LordBobbbin September 8, 2011 9:55 AM BST
Well at the moment we'd just settle for it being a tournament, Jimmy, outdoor or not. The roof wouldn't be fixed, you understand?  But it would be nice to be able to pull down the shutters to fend off the rain. After all, this'll be the fourth year in a row that the end has been delayed by a day or more, so there's clearly a need for a roof.
Report ;[p September 8, 2011 10:20 AM BST
its an outdoor tournament only when sunshine ,lol, it isnt when rains, am i right so r we strict or not, if we r  then no roof and play in the rain.this is just ridiculous thought

It is somehwhat ironic that Wimbledon has the stuffy old image and USA are all gun ho and "GO FOR IT" culture. But when it comes to forward thinking and investing in the future of a GS, Wimbledon found the cash and, to be fair, executed the project very well (not forgetting the Ozzies who were the first). US Open seem to be more focussed on short term profit which, in the long run, will kill it. Already its turning into a joke. They should be on the phone to the archetects today to have a decent 2013 event.

PS Having been to the US Open once, I think one of the main issues is the way the main centre court is constructed. Its relatively lightweight in construction and fair more open than Wimbledon, so to cover that area and build new weight bearing pillars is going to be some project, may be better to start from scratch?

Report abolo September 8, 2011 12:08 PM BST
Mastering weather conditions like wind, heat, humidity is fully part of the pleasure of outdoor tennis. A retractable roof is useful only in case of heavy rains, to allow the tournament to get going a little and give at least something to TV and bettors
Report Patb September 8, 2011 12:12 PM BST

US Open needs to plough some of its profits back into a roof. If Wombles can do it surely they can. At least with a roof you can shift the times around and get the tournament moving. This has basically ruined the tournament as all momentum lost and some players will be disadvantaged by the schedule.
