Rules for the competition:

-Each day you have 100 points to spend on a MAXIMUM of 5 selections
-Bets must be placed as whole numbers
-Bets must be placed by the deadline given (normally at the scheduled start of the match) but on occasion, latitude may be allowed if Im happy a game has started late late bets are only valid if accepted/acknowledged by me. You are permitted to change your bet/bets before the starting time (late changes need to be acknowledged). Bets may not be allowed if this leeway is abused.
-To qualify for the final table you must bet at least 275 points during the tournament
-You cannot carry over points to use the following day
- If a player retires during a match, Betfair rules apply your bet is void if before end of first set, otherwise retiring player loses.
-Should a match in which you have placed a bet on not be played, bets will be void.
- In the event of a void bet, you may place a bet on a match that has not yet passed its deadline. If you are not here to make another bet you will still get the credit for betting those points (although you will make no profit or loss) for the purpose of reaching your final table qualification point target.
- Overall Rankings list Points will be 100,75,60,50,45,40,36,32,28,24,20,18,16,14,12,10 for 1-16, 7 for other final table qualifiers plus 20 for finishing with a profit and 2 for other participants. Your six lowest scores are dropped from the ranking list table over the course of a year. Grand slams will be 3 times the above points, other two week long tournaments twice the above.

-All decisions are final

Should you have any questions or feel I have missed anything out.. please dont hesitate to ask.

New competitors are welcome at any time.

Thank you Valnezuuela and congrats to you too, if not for you, The competition wouldn't have been this exciting, You were equally motivated from the start and competing with you was really good, Last four tournaments, when you had overtaken me in the rankings after the US open, I was deeply concenred, though many consider this as a fun tournament, Like you, I was equally interested in making to the top spot, It took me more than an effort to come closer.

I used to think so much before placing my bets in the competition and my main source of concentration used to be your bets..... All this info is to make you realize, you were the motivation factor for me to put in more serious efforts and I would like to thank you for making the competition this exciting and fun.....and how nail biting the competition was can be well seen with the fact that the last bet of the year decided the overall ranking.... couldn't have asked for more, Mate, Well done to you for the ending on top of the ranking, Wish you all the best for the coming year, Hope to see you around.... Rick, Many Thanks, Mate, I am falling short of words to thank you for the efforts you have put in for running this competition, I am sure, No one on the forum would have been able to manage and run the competition as you had done, extreme discipline, helpfull always ready to listen make improvments, In short, You were just fantastic Rick, if not for you, The competition would have not come this far....

The competition was extremely fun and exciting, The last match in the last day of the year was required to decide the top spot and nothing could have been more thrilling for me and Valenzuela.
All I can say is, it was an wonderful experience to be a participant and eventually winning the same.

Your competition has given many on the forum a reason to login to the forum regularly and it kept us all interested in knowing each others bets... Your innovative ideas like dropping of lowest scores was again fantastic, You just knew how to give everyone a fair chance and trust me, It's not easy, it requires a thoughtful mind.... Mate, Though, I have won the competition, The real hero is none other than you, Rick, In all this process, incase, I have hurt you anytime, it's not what I wanted.... You have my deepest of regards and respects for the time and pain you have taken to run the competition.....

Once again, Thanks Rick and Have a great season ahead

You and valenzuela have led the way with a consistent stream of profits during the year and it was impressive the way you successfully changed strategy on here later in the season with more higher odds picks.

Next year will be bigger (well, one or two comps less probably) and better. Can those at the top stay ahead of the likes of rod hull and Sydneysam as early ranking points start disappearing from the Aus Open onwards?

Thanks for the comp rickkjj

Just wanted to point out the above statement would give the boss the right to full discretion inclduing extending the deadline after the match - my clock is obviously a little off - there couldn't have been much doubt about the bet - the game was a long way from starting - failry obvious who won this week to me - just hope you are not getting bullied by the roman - im getting tired of this fellow telling everyone the rules etc etc

thanks again

Sydneysam
If I warn every finals day about the earlier deadline and then specify here that bets need to be in before 6.30 am UK then I have to keep to the rules in order to keep the comp running smoothly and fairly. I'm sorry your last bet wasn't in time to win but I think you've demonstrated that if you keep going next year, you'll be giving the leaders a run for their money.

For next year, this is one of the areas I might tweak. It was changed around about the time of our biggest fuss on here with someone trying to a claim a late bet was valid when there was good evidence elsewhere that the game was well under way. At a similar time, I was at another sporting event trying to peer at my laptop and see what time a final had started against a late flood of tactical bets. In the meantime, the only way this works is to stick to the rules stated.
Report Sydneysam November 8, 2009 7:52 PM GMT
yep understand - but i think all competitors (excluding the boss) should be penalised 200pts for stating the obvious when it come to rules - cheers

Congrats to all.

I only got to play a few of the last weeks' contests (due to being self-excluded for most of the year)
but it was a good craic nonetheless.

In truth, the format maybe needs looking at if it's to be taken seriously as a tipping contest
e.g. the format should encourage actual tips rather than mathematical selections.
(example...how many of those who tipped Rezai for strategic reasons would have actually tipped her in real life)

BUT having said that, clearly a lot of hard graft by Rick to run the contest week in week out
deserves props and respect. :)
Report Jimmy Commas November 9, 2009 11:31 AM GMT
Good points. I`d like to see a profit and loss table. Obviously couldn`t expect people running the comp to do this as well. Maybe just a monthy update table. If I could do this if time permitted I would.
Anyone showing even a small level stake loss is doing well because in the comp we have to do minimum amount of stakes to qualify whereas being selective (hopefully) and fewer bets with real money shows long term profits.
Report good value losers November 9, 2009 11:41 AM GMT
we had this debate about a long term pl early on in the comp.

if there was a long term overall pl comp then one suspects that ppl who fall behind would quickly lose interest and you'd end up with just a very few posters, whereas this way there's a fresh start every week (a shame real life isn't like that lol).

nor is it either fair or indicative to post a long term pl derived from comp bets because of the chasing bets that people will place later in the week.

Journeyman, I don't like the last day free bets either but how can you tell if they're real or not? We've had one comp all year won by a last day free bet (this last one, probably because it's shorter than the rest) and I can't see that really reflecting the outcome over the year. Happy to consider your suggestions for improvements if you have any.

Rick - any chance you could let it be known at the start of the week as to how many ranking points are being defended for that week.

Should add to the pressure - lol :)

And increase the number of meltdowns.

Oh and I think that I have nil to defend until a few weeks after Aus Open :)

ps -

i have found so much value in the extra research required to avoid being last all the time - albeit by non de plume its helped - im considering running a low stake martingale system next year based on the 2nd most popular pick of the current top 25 for the first 3 days of each tourney - i may even think how to work a % into a prize for rickjj's winner to be donated to a charity of his/hers choice - if its rome - i reserve the right of veto over the charity.........

...relax roman...just a joke...it wont happen

The bit that reaakly struck me was when a forumite had won the previous week's contest
then when he started to go behind in the next week's, he just posted 'please take me out of this contest'
then waited for the next one so he could get a clean start and 'go for gold' again.

Not only does this seem a bit risible butalso by employing what some would effectively see as a strategy
designed to abuse the loopholes, he'll have ended up higher in the tables than those who'd spent the year playing fair and trying to make a genuine week by week profit.

However...

have a think to see if I can suggest any tweaks. as should all concerned.

GVL as regards to a p&l table I was not meaning the competition to be based on that method, more an extra indicator for competitors. You are right people would lose interest if based on overall p&l. On refelction any p&l table could be put up at the end of ther year, but a lot of work though.

I think the table is fine but all tournaments should have the same points imho as it's not like people get knocked out each round. It's a bit unbalanced in the fact that someone can have one lucky tournament and win a slam by picking a dog. This is especially true in the ATP tipping comp.

But very enjoyable all year. Thanks :)

It would be interesting to know if there is any change in the rankings if this was done?
Report RickJJ November 9, 2009 2:44 PM GMT
SEVENNIL - my thought is to start each new comp with an updated leaderboard with ranking points lost for the previous year's comp - you're right on the other point, you missed the first four comps and started in Monterrey.

BTTDJ - partly agree with you which is why we have this scoring system and not the ATP one. Now we have an established comp, I can't see that a guesser winning a Grand Slam would cause too many probs - only the Aus Open was won by someone outside the final top ten.

I have to say though that I like the idea of the longer comps having more points and like the idea of the slams being the most important.

If all comps were equally weighted then valenzuela would have been no 1 but then I also think the scoring system favours long odds backers so overall, I think the scoring system is reasonably fair.

Those who haven't done all the comps suffer in the overall rankings so I hope the alternative ones help make up for that.

i agree that the longer tournaments should carry greater reward as it's obviously harder to win them. whether the x2 and x3 is a fair split is perhaps debatable - the wta ranking points system doesn't have such a big differential. in terms of betting days i think it breaks down like this:

13 rg
12 melbourne, flushing meadows
10 wimbledon, miami, indian wells
9 beijing
8 memphis + a very few others
7 the rest

so whether it's worth having a separate tier for iw and miami is debatable, or if so, then maybe beijing should also be included! lol

actually, i regretted typing that the moment i hit post! :^0 there is a huge differential in the wta ranking system between the slams and the rest.

I feel a bit cheeky making suggestions for change as i didnt enter the competition until quite late in the year but maybe this could be, at least partially, avoided by making EVERY comp a minimum stake of 400 points? I think thats the minimum for the Slams?

i don't think that withdrawing from a week's comp actually benefits anyone, as you're not penalised for doing badly. he would simply not have recorded any points for that week.

BTTDJ - if someone starts a comp and then gives up, they get the losers 7 in the alternative rankings. If someone doesn't enter a comp then the 30 they get in the alternative rankings is below the average score of most of us but you're probably right that the 90 currently given for slams is too generous.

GVL - that list of betting days was interesting. I like the idea of the comp matching the main tour to some extent so my current thought is to reduce the slam weighting to 2.5x and then have the Premier mandatories (Miami, IW, Madrid, Beijing) plus Doha SEC at 1.5x. I'm not intending to have a Doha knockout counting for next year.
