The X Factor 2012 will start at 8PM on August 18, it has been confirmed today.

The series will kick off with an extended special between 8PM and 9:15PM on ITV1 in just over a weeks’ time.

Ant and Dec will be back with Simon Cowell’s gameshow Red or Black both before and after the new series, starting at 7:15PM and 9:15PM.

The X Factor UK will see new judge Nicole Scherzinger join the panel this year, with Gary Barlow, Louis Walsh and Tulisa all returning.

As well as a new judge, the upcoming series will also see a number of format changes too.

The Over 25s have become the Over 28s, the groups are now the bands and the rules regarding management deals have been relaxed.

Contestants have also been encouraged to perform their own original tracks, as well as play instruments throughout their performances during the auditions.

“The level of talent feels a real step up from last year,” said Take That’s Gary Barlow. “Allowing musicians to play their instruments has made a massive difference.

“We have a lot more singer-songwriters, a lot more real artists. I’m really excited.”

X Factor 2012 judge Gary Barlow has claimed that the Overs category are the strongest this year.

With the Take That star rumoured to have been put in charge of the group, it’s no surprise to hear him singing their praises.

This year will see the Overs category have a change of age limits, with it now including those acts over the age of 28 as opposed to 25 as in last year’s series.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Gary also downplayed the groups category, claiming they were the weakest.

“There are two fantastic groups but on the whole the groups are the weakest,” he said. “The over-28s are actually very strong this year.

“The talent all round is much stronger but I would definitely say the overs and the girls are the stand-out categories.”

New judge Nicole Scherzinger however remains the favourite to win the new series.

The former ****cat Doll is rumoured to be in charge of the usually successful boys category, and the bookies give her a 6/4 chance of being crowned the winning judge in her full series début.

However, after winning last year Tulisa won’t be willing to relinquish her title any time soon and she’s breathing down Nicole’s neck at 7/4 to win with the girls in 2012.

It’s 4/1 that Louis and the groups make it back-to-back victories for a band, but it’s not looking good for Gary Barlow as the 5/1 outsider to be the first mentor to win with an over-age contestant since Steve Brookstein back in 2004.

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: “Scherzinger’s already got her claws on the winner.

“History shows that the boys always do well and we expect this year to be no different with Nicole in charge of them.”

X Factor 2012 bosses have vowed to give Gary Barlow “as much time as needs” after the death of his newborn baby.

Gary and his dancer wife Dawn revealed the devastating news earlier this week that new daughter Poppy had been stillborn.

A source close to the show’s production team told the Daily Mirror this week: “We will move the dates if we need to.

“It’s not a problem at all – we will give Gary as much time as he needs after the news. We are all there for him.”

The newspaper reports that Gary’s Take That bandmates have been supporting him and his wife through the trauma.

“They are all utterly distraught for Gary,” a source revealed. “The boys are such a tight bunch and this has really knocked them all for six. They will always be there for him.”

Meanwhile Gary Barlow took to Twitter yesterday to thank the thousands of fans who had sent him messages of support.

He said: “Your kind words and lovely messages are overwhelming. thank you.”

The X Factor 2012 final will be held in Manchester this year, it has been confirmed.

It’s been confirmed today that this year’s series will conclude with a huge live show at the Manchester Central Convention Complex, which can hold over 11,000 people.

The finalists and judges Gary Barlow, Nicole Scherzinger, Tulisa Consotavlos and Louis Walsh will move the show to the city for the final live show way ahead in December.

Last year was the first time that the live final had moved from its base at Fountain Studios, with the last live show being put on in front of thousands of fans at Wembley Arena.

Louis Walsh said “Our Live Final is going to be another major event – so The X Factor 2012 has everything.

“I believe it’s going to be our best series yet.”

That 5s definite value, hems. A generous price that seems to be based around a 'the overs can't win' mindset. Of course, this was the same thing they were saying last year regarding the groups. With Barlow in charge, and the whole singer-songwriter, playing their own instruments angle, you can see TPTB managing to give some contestants in this category greater credibility, at least in XF land.

X Factor judge Louis Walsh reckons that the opening episode to the new series is the best first show ever.

The Irish music mogul claimed that tomorrow night’s premiere is a must watch for both the talent and the drama.

Having spent nine years on the show, it’s quite a remark from the boy band manager!

But Louis insisted: “It’s the best first show ever, this year the contestants can sing anything, we’ve got lots of talent.

“The drama is still there, but the talent is there too. It’s a different series, you’re going to be really surprised.”

He added: “I’ve been doing it nine years but its always exciting, It’s the best job on TV. This series is amazing.”

Louis also revealed he hadn’t decided about his future on the show after admitting he’d love to stay for 10 years on the panel.

He said: “If i get ten years I’ll be more than happy but at the moment I’m focusing on this series!”

The 60-year-old also backed changes to this year’s rules which have welcomed professional acts with managers as well as original song writers.

He raved: “The talent all round is better, we’ve got a lot of original artists.”

We’ve seen tomorrow’s first episode and it’s certainly a dramatic one, and we can’t disagree with Louis’ claims!

Cowell a supreme bandwagon jumper

from The Sun

THE X Factor is going for gold — by signing up Mo Farah.

Olympics hero Mo, 29, is poised to be a “mentor” to wannabes in the ITV1 show’s latest run, which starts tonight.

Simon Cowell has been wooing the double gold medal winner to appear so the new series captures the “spirit” of London 2012.

The top secret plan will see a special Olympics-themed spectacular when live X Factor rounds begin, a source revealed.

Fellow Team GB members will join Mo, who thrilled the nation by winning the 10,000 and 5,000 metres.

The source said last night: “Teaming up with our athletes means they can offer training and pep talks.

“People like Mo know about dedication and hard work. It’s only right we invite them to help us shape our future pop stars.”

An average audience of just over 8 million tuned in to the launch of The X Factor 2012 last night, the lowest opening episode since 2006.

The 75-minute opener for the new series averaged 8.09 million viewers between 8PM and 9:15PM, peaking with over 9.2 million viewers.

It was well down on the 10.8 million viewers who watched last year’s first show, and ahead of the first three series’ launch night ratings.

The opener was also down on rival show The Voice UK, which launched with 8.4 million viewers earlier this year.

ITV1+1 viewers added a further 620,000 to the average, while helped the peak audience rise to just under 10 million.

With still four months to go of the series it’s sure to be a worrying sign, and no doubt all eyes will be on the ratings over the next weeks.

Let’s just hope that these current figures don’t go the same as The Voice’s did…

Meanwhile Simon Cowell’s Red or Black gameshow failed to ignite any major interesting, managing just over 3 million viewers before The X Factor and 4 million afterwards.

The return of Jonathan Ross did a little better however, managing a respectable 3.6 million late into the night.

Jessica Ennis, Sir Chris Hoy and Bradley Wiggins are being lined up as guest mentors on The X Factor, reports the Sunday Mirror.

The Team GB stars are said to be joining double gold medallist Mo Farah at one of the live shows in September. ITV1 has allegedly spent around £1m to secure the athletes' appearance.

"X Factor producers were literally jumping up and down with delight when they heard that all four Olympic athletes had agreed to do the show," an insider is quoted as telling the paper.

"If these wannabes really want to achieve their dreams and win The X Factor then there are no better people to spend time with."

The source also claimed that Simon Cowell approached the athletes just hours after last weekend's closing ceremony, hinting that the special episode could be "one of the most watched X Factors ever".

The reports follow rumours that the show's ratings rival, the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, has been trying to get Olympians including Rebecca Adlington and Victoria Pendleton on board for its return to screen this autumn.

"Simon can see the irony of using the stars of what was ultimately a BBC event to help boost his own ratings," added the source. "And if his mind wasn't already made up, the moment he heard that Strictly was linked to some of the athletes he knew he had to act fast.

"In Mo, Bradley, Chris and Jess he has bagged arguably the cream of the crop from Team GB, and he is ecstatic they are going to be involved."

The ninth series of the talent contest began last night and recorded the lowest launch show viewing figures since 2006.

She told the newspaper: “Simon likes nursery nosh, things like rhubarb crumble, sticky toffee pudding and spotted ****.”

X Factor judge Louis Walsh has tipped Ella Henderson to make the final of the show.

The Irish music mogul compared Ella to Adele after she performed an original song for the judges on Saturday night’s opening show.

The schoolgirl wowed all of the judges at her audition in Manchester, managing to even tame grumpy Spice Mel B.

Asked about the teenager on Irish TV, Louis raved this week: “I loved the fact she was original, everything about her. It was almost like finding a new Adele.

“She’s somebody with an original recording voice, somebody who will get a record deal, somebody who will sell records all around the world.”

He added: “Ella absolutely stands out. I can see her in the final. It’s early days, but I can see Ella going all the way.”

Ella told us earlier this week that she was “flattered” by the comparisons to Adele, but was keen to be known as her own artist.

She admitted that she didn’t want to be “pigeon holed” as a similar singer, adding: “I also don’t want to be seen as stepping on someone else’s feet or taking their spot in the charts, I just want to be out there as myself.”

Brian Friedman will be back in charge of The X Factor live shows this year, after quitting for the US last autumn.

Simon Cowell had taken Brian with him for the first series of the American X Factor, replacing him with Elizabeth Honan.

Beth had choregraphed for Girls Aloud and former X Factor judge Cheryl Cole, including her epic live performances on the show.

But her moves for the contestants didn’t go down so well, with many viewers complaining about the poor routines.

A source told The Sun this morning: “America is teeming with great choreographers so Simon could spare him to return to the UK. Last year’s performances were often atrocious in Simon’s eyes mainly because the choreography was all wrong.

“Brian instinctively knows what works and he was sorely missed. Simon has dug out his cheque book and given him a load of cash and said ‘fix it’.”

The supposed insider added: “The producers are delighted because they have the top guy back on board.”

Now all they need to do is sack last year’s stylist too…
