I backed Paul but after hearing his performance I didn't think he would qualify.  I expected Cowell to back him but still never thought he'd go through.  I got lucky tonight.

It comes back down to Cowell's pro-black mentality. Neither a good thing nor a bad thing, just something he's been open about before. A black underdog is SC catnip. It shows how mediocre Paul was that I was willing to disregard this principle.

I thought piano man was abit of a mess with chopping and changing songs and was forgettable tonight.

It's the temptation to chase that gets most bettors into trouble, not backing perceived value selections. You will always get it wrong from time to time.

The only time I get that 'chasing' feeling these days is on the poker sometimes.

Backing at @ average of 1.8 when you see something as definitely no more than 1.5 and closer to 1.25, then you can't moan.

I was pleased to see my fears were groundless. I think he's bombproof unless something is lurking in the semis's I'm currently unaware of.

In fact if he does a song more like his audition choice I think he will actually have a greater wow factor in the Final than tonight.

I personally thought that Biker Boy was really slow and boring tonight...much worse than his audition.

On the other hand, I enjoyed the piano bloke and his song choices, and thought it was the correct decision for him to be 2nd.

Only my opinion, but I laid Biker Boy straight after his act to qualify as I thought that most of Britain may also be a bit bored.

Obviously Ronan has the momentum. There's always a potential 'red button' moment in this show, or someone else to stand out in further auditions. It wouldn't interest me backing him odds-on. He will be under a fair amount of pressure being talked of as the winner already.

GB2 - Joe only performed yesterday so he's hardly going to be getting the numbers on youtube as some of the others.
He was trending on twitter all night, as he is now. No sign of Paul or piano or anything similar, so that backed up what I thought was the case anyway. Joe an easy 2nd.

made that mistake last year with spellbound cider, waiting for something better to come and beat them, thought they were far too short and layed throughtout the week as they got shorter and shorter! not going to make the same mistake this year....

I found both bike boy and piano rather dull tonight.
Ted & Grace would have got my vote, who did trend.

I agree the camera work for bike boy was crap, zoom,  which could hav cost him.
We'll see how close it was after the final.

On that point zoom, I was thinking of what tonight's result told us for the rest of the week. Obviously Ronan was a shoo-in, but what struck me with both him and piano man was the camera work was much more cohesive.

This goes without saying due to the nature of their acts (musical solo). But as a few said already in this thread, the likes of the Girls and Arnie and bike boy, the staging and also the camera work, didn't really work in their favour.

Not certain that this will hold thru for the rest of the week, but it is definitely something I will consider before placing bets.

I'm not suggesting a lay of Ronan, majorack, just that I wouldn't back. I got stuck into spellbound last year when I felt I had enough info to back odds-on (I think circa 1.8). It's priced in now that nobody is going to come along, Ronan will perform well and get a pimp slot.

Yeah think them being easier to shoot is definitely a factor. But I suppose the other thing to consider is that the producers don't want all musical solos in the final either, so the running order may be where they try to make sure that doesn't happen.

Food for thought anyways, but as I am new on these markets, I expect I am probably 3 or 4 steps behind the thinking of the regulars!!
