backed Greece and Romania win and top 4, so the Romania top 4 is a winner at 9.6.

laid Armenia, Israel, Turkey, Denmark and Belgium top 3, and paid out on only Turkey.

The winner market was mental for the first few votes, Denmark got backed at 1.7 and under after they got 12 points from the first two countries.

I think this may be a case of hype winning this time.  Maybe they should ensure somehow that the first ever hearing of the song is in the contest or semi-finals.  Anything to stop vacuous stuff like this winning.
Report leroyb May 29, 2010 11:29 PM BST
Laid off all my Germany bet after her performance tonight :/ Oh well, Belgium won the first semi final =)
Report five leaves left May 29, 2010 11:31 PM BST
Cheers frog.
I think most on here liked it on 1st listen, it was just whether it was eurovision enough.

Don't talk nonsense ribbet. It wasn't no.1 all over europe, as Norton said, It just had some decent airplay, but only because some pop based radio picked up on it because it's such a good song.
If any other song had been as good they'd have played them too.
Report cunnybobbler May 29, 2010 11:34 PM BST
belgium was a good song, didnt see the semis cept on the net today. looked at the price for top ten and thought hmmm thats a bit big. but id already lumped on iceland so didnt bother. when it came on i thought oh hell this is gonna make the top 10 ive missed a great trade here...looked and the price had dropped to about 1.6 so i didnt back it.
Report Cider May 29, 2010 11:35 PM BST
And it was the German entry.

As a novice Eurovision bettor I though the voting bias was well overrated. If the UK song and performer were good enough, it would win. Simples.
Report squares May 29, 2010 11:35 PM BST
Really heartening that the two songs which were different from the usual Eurovision offerings have done so well (Germany and Belgium).

Hope we take note next year.
Report squares May 29, 2010 11:36 PM BST
as in the UK when choosing their entry.  Send someone like Florence or Diana Vickers rather than Rick Astley or Hazell Dean types.

Yep and Turkey too.

Report cunnybobbler May 29, 2010 11:40 PM BST
the old style eurovision songs have bombed for many years now. the daft ones never get anywhere anymore. like spain and germany last year i think it was. and the big powerful ones and cheesy ones dont really win like they used to. i may be wrong but i seem to think alot of recent winners have already been well known songs beforehand.
Report Cider May 29, 2010 11:41 PM BST
Wasn't all that keen on Belgium myself. Pleasant, but forgettable was my opinion. Ireland languishing at the bottom was quite surprising also, the crowd in Norway loved it.
Report HGsuperhoopza May 29, 2010 11:41 PM BST
Iceland should have done better to be honest.
Report ribbet May 29, 2010 11:53 PM BST
Fair point five leaves left, but add in facebook, myspace, youtube, plus "support for Lena pages" on twitter, and numerous other sites, the question is whether hype is simply the way to win Eurovision now?
Report Cider May 29, 2010 11:56 PM BST
Don't forget, they ain't got t'internet in the back waters of Europe yet [:p]
Report five leaves left May 30, 2010 12:10 AM BST
lol no cider.

I'm not sure facebook, twitter or youtube played any real part, ribbet.
It was just a very good popsong in a competition that throws up very few.
Last years winner was one, but before that you're probably going back to the 80's and 70's.

Yes it had an the advantage of getting airplay in various countries, but only as I said before, because it was a good popsong.
Lena as far as I know did virtually no touring or plugging before the contest.
Unlike Azer who threw a fortune at plugging their song and came up well short.

The song won because it was the best. Simples.
Report Cider May 30, 2010 12:14 AM BST
The other plus was that when she got there she was likely to charm the pants off everyone, there are numerous videos to show that she did exactly that. Must have been a plus with the jury voting.

I had to bail on the competition/market just after the dress rehearsals last year, so I missed the semis and the final. I cancelled all unmatched bets and kept Azerbaijan as my biggest green (idiot!) and Lena as my second and didn't see the odds after that. It's interesting reading the reactions in these threads. I watched the final after the fact but managed to avoid finding out who had won (tried to pretend it was live as it's just not fun otherwise). I remember hearing the crowd's response to Lena and thinking "she's won". I'm surprised to find out she drifted during her performance. Azerbaijan put in a better than expected performance but she had a terrible slot, though I don't know if she'd have come much closer with a better one. I think the biggest surprise for me was Romania. I always thought their routine adorable but never expected them to do so well.

I always said Germany had a good chance and that I was green on it. Unless you were talking about another penguins, of course.

Anyway, this thread is actually quite insightful for someone who missed the final. I never realised France plunged so. And the Denmark plunge... goddamn.

I also rewatched some of the songs. I forgot just how awful Azerbaijan was. Very, very cringeworthy. Still, she didn't trip walking down the stairs of doom, which had been my biggest fear.
