Could not agree more, Gin.  The true voice of snooker for many years.

Have very much missed Clive's commentary over the past few years - another one of the great sports commentators sadly no longer with us. R.I.P

Favourite commentator by a distance for Snooker and an incredible passion for the game allied to a vast knowledge of both the game's history and the present. Will be much missed.

Easily the best commentator/pundit that Snooker has ever had, but was rarely given the credit he deserved. One reason being his many battles against others within the sport.

His book "Black Farce and Cue Ball Wizards" is a joy. Some hilarious stories about John Pulman, amongst others, live long in the memory.

RIP.

John Pulman arrives at venue, cue case in hand, waistcoat and dickie bow in place. Guy on the door: are you the snooker player?" "No, I'm the fcking chimney sweep."

It's a great book indeed Alun. And above and beyond being a good commentator, Clive was first and foremost a relentless and determined journalist who pursued stories often to his own cost. One year at the UK, they actually drew physical lines in the venue to indicate to Clive where he could and couldn't go. They couldn't ban him outright as he worked for the BBC. He truly put the current lot of yes men and bootlickers to shame. RIP a true great.

Really Sad news. He had been unwell for a while, and his contributions in Snooker Scene had become less and less frequent - but, it still came as a shock to hear he had passed away.

But, Clive remained committed to snooker and his journalistic principles right up to the end. When the point came when he was no longer able to edit Snooker Scene, and they were looking for someone else - the job initially went to Nick Metcalfe who writes for The Metro. Metcalfe then informed Clive that he was planning on reporting less on the actual tournaments being played, and would devote more space for interviews with the top players, and some other unspecified features. In the December 2022 issue of Snooker Scene, Metcalfe's coverage of the UK was so sparse, that he did not provide a complete list of results for the tournament, at which point Clive informed him that he did not want his name associated with this edition (as editorial consultant). However, after Metcalfe included Clive's name, Clive shared his concerns - regarding the direction the magazine was taking - with the new owners of the magazine, Curtis Sport, who ended Metcalfe's involvement, and brought in Marcus Stead, who is still the magazine's editor.

I actually spoke to Clive a few times, although it was only when I was ringing up to renew my subscription to Snooker Scene, and Clive answered the phone and took my details!

RIP Clive.

Interesting stuff gobe. I bet when he answered the phone with his typical cheery "hellooo", i had reason to call him once or twice myself and he was always enaging and very helpful. I didn't know that about SS and Metcalfe but it doesnt surprise me one bit. Clive was basically a self made man, built up a one man industry as a freelance reporter and made SS what it was. He was always helpful and encouraging to those who came to him for help, but if you crossed him or weren't meeting his standards, he could be ruthless in defending his ground. As i think is made clear in his book. He had to be that way really.
