Baz been hinting at this for ages so finally an announcement of an upcoming invitational tournament and more wads of easy cash to be dished out among the games elite. The high break - I kid you not - will be 167 courtesy of a so called "golden ball" to be potted after the 15 reds and colours have disappeared. Lot more nonsense to follow I'm certain.

The sad thing is , you just know the top players are going to say how wonderful it is, even thought it'll be played in front of one man and his dog and nobody will be able to watch it. The top players won't care, biggest pay cheque of their lives, screw decency. Murphy has already said we should give it a chance. It's a sad day for snooker.Interested to see how Ronnie's view on this tournament.

Saw someone on the twatter machine yesterday suggest that the only reason the Hearns(es) came up with the ridiculous golden ball wheeze was to distract from the controversy of the Saudi angle and after seeing a BBC clip that highlighted it over everything else, I'm more than willing to believe it. Gauging the reaction across social media, I'd roughly estimate that around 98% of the general snooker public is openly hostile while 100% of lower ranked pros who have commented are both hostile and indignant. Indignant not necessarily due to any moral qualms, that they've mentioned anyway, but that the top ranked are been handed more largesse while they continue to struggle.

And i have to say they do have a point, especially around the time of the year when we invariably point to the lower ranked guys and how little game time they're getting. Fail to qualify for the World or Welsh Opens and you'll have a 2 month+ gap to the worlds without any tournament match practise whatsoever. Announcing another big money jamboree for the elite when this perennial issue is confronting you again is just terrible optics imo.

My strong suspicion is that WS is so cash strapped right now it either cannot or simply does not want to cater for the lower ranked with more tournaments that might struggle to attract sponsorship and so would have to be funded from their own already seriously depleted coffers. Either way, i don't see this latest wheeze improving their increasingly frosty relationship with the majority of their voting members.

Totally agree, mate.  It is almost as if WST knows it will be coming up against a breakaway group unless it appeases them.
