I like ryan day, comes across as a very pleasant chap, but he lacks the mental ruthlessness to be a top snooker player. Makes a few qfs and rarely beyond that and that’s pretty much his level. He’s a quarter final type of player and that’s all you need to be a top 16 regular in this, the greatest snooker era ever.

gj - how dare you suggest that players who have no killer instinct and were treated as cannon fodder for 10-15 years are not "great players" in this era of total greatness. In fact, how dare you suggest that a truly world class performer like Day has no killer instinct.

Imagine how many ranking events the greatest would have won had he been around in this era - 50 to 60 as an absolute minimum. I heard N.Robertson infer in a piece during the UK that players wouldn't be as scared of him in this era, as they all played a similar attacking game and that is what set him apart when he dominated the game. Outrageously, it went unchallenged. What is certain is that Robbo wouldn't have won 14 ranking events had he been around in the mid 90s, absolutely nowhere near it.
Report trebor December 15, 2018 10:54 AM GMT
Hendry had 63% of his wins in the first third of his career, in other words before O'Sullivan, Higgins and Williams had got 3 years experience under their belts, imo the majority of Hendry's wins came in a era no stronger than now.

He may have won more ranking events because of there being more ranking events to play in now, but he get's rated as the goat on just a third of his career, the other two thirds he was very ordinary and not a player to be feared.
Report gjohn101 December 15, 2018 11:29 AM GMT
I’ve always had the feeling the thin cloths, generous pockets and fast tables would have made hendry even more of a beast than he was. Remember, one of his “weaknesses”, if you can call it that, was that he wasn’t blessed with massive cue power, at least relative to his closest rivals, a shortcoming that would count far less on these “super fine cloths”, as JV would put it. Of course there’s always the chance today’s players- though truly great as they are - would drag him down to their level but I believe he would hoover up dozens of these titles. If most of these guys still soil their keks when facing ronnie why would it be any different against a peak hendry robbo?
Report trebor December 15, 2018 11:54 AM GMT
Not sure that's a fair comparison GJ, your putting Hendry at his peak against all the rest as you see them today, So O'Sullivan, Higgins and Williams as 43 year olds against a younger Hendry? they already saw him off as he did with Davis.

A lot gets said about how old some of the players competing are but some of Hendry's opponents where over 50, not surprising they feared his attacking game, but when the class off 92 got into their stride, it was more Hendry who felt the fear and drifted away at a relatively early age, no longer having the confidence to play his attacking game.

Although I think Robbo's comments are to build confidence and never talk your self down, I think there is some truth in there. Hendry's last two thirds of his career seem to comfirm it.
Report gjohn101 December 15, 2018 12:29 PM GMT
I dunno, these comparisons only really work on a superficial level anyway. But robbo was specifically referring to peak era hendry anyway so on that basis I’d say it’s fair enough. Your right as to robbos motive at least, just more unconvincing bluster from a guy whose achievements never quite match up to his big talk.

Historical trouble with snooker is the davis’ held its development back decades through running the sport as their own personal fiefdom so naturally the age profile remained high far longer than it should have. But far from being a sign of things to come the youth explosion of the 92 generation turned out to be nothing more than a blip, an exception to the rule. Despite all the changes things are regressing back to the way they were, with the added difference that there is less top quality coming through and a heap load more of abject mediocrity.

trebor "...the other two thirds he was very ordinary and not a player to be feared".

Very ordinary? Really? Maybe that description applies to the final 5-6 years of his career but not for 18 of his 27 years as a professional. As for the standard - I don't remember Hendry appearing in too many ranking QFs with 4 players in it as limited as D.Wells, S.Baird, A.Burden and S.Carrington.

Allen looks out of focus, mentally shattered. See he hadn’t entered germany next week too. Don’t think he wins this match from here.
Report trebor December 15, 2018 2:33 PM GMT
As I said earlier it would be difficult to get a quarters with players with those rankings in the 90's due to top 16 not starting untilmost of the lower ranked players have knocked each other out, but I know I can find some weak quarters from the 90's, I like a challenge.Grin

As for Hendry being ordenary last 18 years of career there was an obvoius contender for me to compare against, Robbo of course, Hendry 4 more wins in 2 extra years, but take out Hendry's years 10 and 11 and you take out 10 wins, so over same number of years Robbo 6 ahead.

Ok so I am comparing Hendry's decline against Robbo's career so far, but that was what I was saying in my prior post.
Report gjohn101 December 15, 2018 2:56 PM GMT
Ah here, hendry was a machine, a rolls royce of a competitor whose decline has to be seen in the context of stiff challenges from the best generation of players ever and in their peak. Neil Robertson is a trumped up ford escort who won the softest ever world title and recorded sports most inappropriate ott celebration after achieving some meaningless scoring record. Any comparison between the two is little short of ludicrous.

I thought that was the case when I posted "Hello, hello!"

If Allen is to prevail, I won't be around to see it, and I'm not here for SF#2 either.

Report gjohn101 December 15, 2018 5:19 PM GMT
Quality wins in the end. Wells looked a bit crestfallen there, feel a bit sorry for him, a chance that won’t come around again in a hurry.

When he won international Allen came back from the dead to beat Liam Highfield and does it here against Danny Wells. Don’t know what he was at for four frames there though, looked like he was about to self combust.
Report gobelins December 15, 2018 5:30 PM GMT
Yes, a good comeback from Allen - who just said in his interview he's been on the ale every night, and basically hasn't cared about whether he's won or lost. They tell me the standard is so high these days, and there are so many great players around. Clearly, none of them are playing here this week.
Report gjohn101 December 15, 2018 6:14 PM GMT
I’m convinced a few of the top players got together a couple of months back and laid bets to see who could play the worst snooker and still win matches, just to liven the tour up a bit. As things stand Allen could be in line for an added xmas bonus though higgins still pushing him close.
Report wisewords December 15, 2018 6:44 PM GMT
how low did Daniel Wells trade this afternoon?
Report gobelins December 15, 2018 7:12 PM GMT
I think you're right gj haha. Allen gets added points for it being in a SF though. If O'Sullivan, Williams and now Allen can say after matches that they didn't care if they'd lost, and they genuinely meant it (and I believe they do) what does that say for the credibility of these tournaments?

D.Wells was matched for a few hundred at 1.06, but for a few grand at 1.07-1.1, and then all the numbers upwards. In fairness, he was leading 4-0 and by 50 in the next. From 5-2 he never got a look in after he touched the green.
