The thing you realise quickly about China is that a lot of it is for show. We were put up in this brand spanking new 5* hotel, but literally nobody else was in it. Each day, the sole person running the bar had to go to the supermarket to buy the beer we were drinking. There is no way in the world that it would have been viable to keep the doors open after we all left.
The venue for the event we were at had a 340m long aircraft hangar (it's a tiny little municipal airport), and it's so hard to fly privately out there that it will NEVER come close to being fully utilised. I would estimate that less than 1000 people attended over the course of the three days. I suspect it's the same with snooker tournaments over there. Local governments will literally be falling over themselves to put on these events because it gives the impression of power and grandeur. |
