Here we go again. It's the sort of tournament that M.Selby seems to excel in, and the early best of 11s should suit him far better than the best of 7 nonsense which prevails for most of the tournaments in UK/Europe. He has a tricky quarter but 6/1 seems decent enough for a small dabble.

If you haven’t won a tournament I can’t honestly see why you’d have any business in an event called “champion of champions.” The only thing you are champion of is never quite getting there. If that means they can’t fill 16 places so be it.

I noticed this earlier and have a solution, more tournaments needed to fill any gaps in the 16!! Devil

"It's curious, but a lot of what you would have considered to be the better Chinese players are all struggling at the same time.  Was going to list Bingtao, Wenbo etc.  Then I started wondering what had happened to Yupeng.  Don't think I knew he got caught up (along with Yu Delu) in the David John cheating investigation....  Currently suspended...."

Lata - the hearings are expected to take place later this month, including J.Jones's involvement in the D.John investigation. I'm not sure why these things take so long, but if either of Cao Yupeng or Yu Delu are actually found not guilty they'll have had a similar length of suspension as J.Higgins had following the NOTW sting.
Report gjohn101 November 4, 2018 7:50 PM GMT
It’s all a bit strange but there’d surely already have been an appeal if there was even a shred of doubt about their guilt here. They obviously have them bang to rights I would imagine.
Report gobelins November 4, 2018 8:22 PM GMT
Can they appeal before the hearing though? I do think it's harsh that players are suspended (indefinitely) until their guilt is proven. Yu Delu's case is an odd one, as matches he actually won are also being investigated. It really shouldn't take this long to present their evidence.
Report gjohn101 November 4, 2018 9:29 PM GMT
I’m no legal eagle but can’t see what’d be stopping a guy going to court to get an injunction against such a suspension. If you were adamant about your innocence, would you be happy to wait around 6-9 months for them to put some kind of case together?

Wpbsa may not have such a facility but others do. Remember Tyson Fury appealing his provisional suspension when he tested positive a couple of years back and got it lifted. Like I said though, it does look like these guys are toast, otherwise they’d have a fairly strong grievance in the (unlikely) event they’re cleared.
Report Latalomne November 4, 2018 10:13 PM GMT
Ta for the extra info, Gobelins!  Is there a published list of matches they're looking at?  If you're right about him being under investigation in matches he won, surely they must feature one of the other suspended players?  I did notice that both Delu and Caopeng had both lost matches at the Welsh Open (John being Welsh - no idea if that is significant or not) in the stated timeframes to nil....  Is the suspicious betting activity correct score related?

I completely agree with GJ's take on it, TBH.

You're spot on gj - they did have the opportunity to appeal the suspensions but chose not to.

D.John - has been charged with manipulating the outcome of 2 matches in which he was involved and failing to co-operate properly with the WPBSA enquiry.

29/09/2016 - lost 6-1 to G.Dott in International Championship R1.
24/01/2017 - lost 5-0 to J.Perry in China Open R1.
There are also 2 other matches which were under review but the details are unknown from August 2017.

Cao Yupeng - has been charged with manipulating the outcome of 3 matches in which he was involved and failing to co-operate properly with the WPBSA enquiry.

15/02/2016 - lost 4-0 to A.Carter in Welsh Open R1.
30/06/2016 - lost 4-0 to S.Bingham in Indian Open R1.
24/11/2016 - lost 6-1 to S.Maguire in UK.

Yu Delu - has been charged with manipulating the outcome of 5 matches in which he was involved, failing to report 2 approaches to fix matches, betting on snooker and failing to co-operate properly with the WPBSA enquiry.

12/02/2015 - won 4-3 v M.McCrudden in Indian Open R1.
29/08/2015 - lost 4-1 to D.Dale in Paul hunter Classic R1.
15/02/2016 - won 4-3 v I.Glover in Welsh Open R1.
04/08/2017 - lost 4-1 to M.Gerogiou in European Masters R1.
15/11/2017 - lost 5-3 to K.Maflin in Shanghai Masters R3.

J.Jones - has been charged with a breach of WPBSA betting regulations. He is accused of being party to, or facilitated, the manipulation of the outcome of D.John's 6-1 defeat to G.Dott.
Report gjohn101 November 4, 2018 10:57 PM GMT
Good info gobe, cheers. The Delu stuff is interesting in that it doesn’t exactly fit the fixing pattern we expect. I’d say it’s very long odds we’ll ever see him on tour again. Yupeng chances not much better, sad as he was quite a decent player.

Guessing poor Jones got roped in as an intermediary to get bets on. Probably a 2 year job or thereabouts would be my guess.
Report gobelins November 4, 2018 11:24 PM GMT
Cao Yupeng's is an interesting case as he was relegated from the tour at the end of the 2015/16 season, and he had to go to Q school to regain his place. All 3 of the matches being investigated are from the following season - a season in which he only won 2 matches. The evidence against him would need to be overwhelming, you'd think, given his dismal form for a full 2 seasons.
Report gjohn101 November 4, 2018 11:39 PM GMT
Be interesting to see how the cases are linked, if indeed they are. Looks like it though, hard to see the fact they both allegedly fixed matches on the same day at Welsh Open as mere coincidence. Have to assume third parties involved somehow too, guess that may be why it’s taking all this time to disentangle it. Would imagine John/Jones case is separate but then again, you’d never know.
Report gobelins November 4, 2018 11:42 PM GMT
Actually his defeat to A.Carter was from the season he was relegated. Carter also beat him 10-8 in a World qualifier at the end of that season. I remember the game well as I had a decent bet on Carter to qualify for The Crucible and Yupeng hardly missed a ball in the 2nd session and levelled at 8-8 from 3-6 down at the interval. He didn't play like someone who could barely win a match that season or next.
Report trebor November 5, 2018 1:02 AM GMT
I would imagine that they check lots of deciding frame matches, unlike when the Francisco's would bet on themselves losing 9-2 and scores like that arousing suspicion a player dutching a deciding frame win with an opponent's win cant lose the bet, can play much more freely and not get suspected when he wins, and still get his prize money for the win. And no internet trail of betting left to be traced.
Report gjohn101 November 5, 2018 1:48 AM GMT
Nice theory. Only very slight snag I can see with that is where the player, sitting in his seat awaiting break off, gets the opportunity to place this mythical hedging bet. I’ve never known a dodgy match, either proven or suspected, to have gone to a deciding frame though you still get the odd looper out there who’ll try to convince you the 85 final was completely fixed.
Report Latalomne November 5, 2018 8:58 AM GMT
Many thanks for posting all that, Gobelins!  Interesting indeed.  At face value, there's nothing in John's or Yupeng's results in those matches that would arouse too much suspicion (ergo you have to assume we're talking correct score wagers?).  Yu Delu's definitely makes for more interesting reading, just by virtue of the names of the opponents....  Not exactly world beaters.  Can't say as I've ever seen him as being a great prospect, but if he's bent, then it's difficult to know anyway....  I can't imagine many if any of his matches above would have been televised, even on a second table.  The others are all possibles, depending upon scheduling, I suppose....

Very interesting.
Report trebor November 5, 2018 9:54 AM GMT
There is no hedging bet needing to be placed gj, he wins the deciding frame or loses, moneywise the same either way, and as you say you dont believe a dodgy match to go to the last frame? just proves there is less suspision aroused. If a player is prepared to throw a match I am sure he is prepared to chance getting throug on a decider?
Report gjohn101 November 5, 2018 10:58 AM GMT
I must be slow on the uptake because I’m not getting it. Where’s the bet? What’s the fix? If it’s pre-planned then either both players have to be in on it or it’s just a hopeful punt on going to a steve ryder. Unless, as I said, I’m entirely missing something here.
Report gjohn101 November 5, 2018 11:00 AM GMT
A key sentence there for me is “failed to report 2 approaches to fix matches”. Assuming they’re not referring to another sting of some sort, sounds like some shadowy individuals involved on the sidelines.
Report gobelins November 5, 2018 11:50 AM GMT
I suppose bin Yu Delu's case it's possible he was backed not to cover the handicap. He was playing amateurs, so by winning 4-3 he goes through but the handicap bets land. But, realistically how much could you bet on this kind of market without arousing suspicion?
Report Latalomne November 5, 2018 12:01 PM GMT
Good shout about handicaps.  Guess the same could be applied to both John and Yupeng, though as you say, quite how much you'd be able to get on?  Certainly not very much here these days.  (it's been a V long time since I've put any money into a HC market)
