anyone sensing upset here, for someone so gifted McGuire loses an awful lot to players he should brush aside,a filthy individual snooker wise imo

mcgill is a scrapper but maguire is a class apart if he is up for it
Report gentlemanjohn April 18, 2015 3:54 PM BST
Maguire out of sorts, temper fraying and its only the 4th frame. McGill wins i think
Report trebor April 18, 2015 4:23 PM BST
Favourite gets turned over more often when they are practice partners. Like Judds record against Lisowski 1 win from 4, against Milkins 2 from 8,  against Norman 1 from 3, Players you would expect Judd to hold winning records against.

Mike Wasley has played Milkins hundreds of times and knocked out Milkins in the final qualifying match last season.
Report gentlemanjohn April 18, 2015 4:30 PM BST
Its an interesting angle I have to say, not one much notice is taken of. Are Maguire and McGill practice buddies too? Have to say its a bit early for Mags to spitting the dummy out, very poor showing in the opening session for whatever reason.
Report trebor April 18, 2015 4:31 PM BST
yes they practice together
Report gentlemanjohn April 18, 2015 4:39 PM BST
Would be a good angle for a discursive article if sportswriters actually bothered to write about snooker anymore. I remember reading a piece where Steve Davis was struggling for decent practice partners at one time, but then Ken Doherty turned up in east london and was always willing to take him on.

I assume players would have several regular practice partners, would get tiresome playing the same guy over and over?
Report pandora1963 April 18, 2015 4:54 PM BST
time to back maguire if he goes 4-1 down
Report paddletoe April 18, 2015 4:55 PM BST
McGill and Milkens playing at the same time. One enjoys playing infront of a big crowd at a big venue while the other is a head shaker and a bag of nerves. Same thing happened to Milkens in the masters.
Report paddletoe April 18, 2015 4:57 PM BST
For a player with the nickname the milkman he aint got much bottle.

Report paddletoe April 18, 2015 6:08 PM BST
Thought he played the right shot to play a snooker off the last red. Just very unlucky. If he plays dead weight to get out of the snooker he was in himself he gives McGill the chance to play another very hard to get out of snooker. Done nothing wrong. Just dead unlucky.
Report pandora1963 April 18, 2015 6:09 PM BST
why hit the ball so hard when trying to get out of the snooker?? if he hits it slow he cant leave a free ball...and why try the stupid double on the black??
Report paddletoe April 18, 2015 6:11 PM BST
Looked a very dodgy free ball the ref called.
Report pandora1963 April 18, 2015 6:12 PM BST
it did yeah but he should never have it it so hard where the balls were, was crying out to be a free ball unless he hit it slow, i still think he will win the match mind
Report paddletoe April 18, 2015 6:13 PM BST
if he hits it slow he is going to be wrapped up in another snooker and a very tough one at that.
Report pandora1963 April 18, 2015 6:13 PM BST
talking about the free ball..i thought the rule had changed?? i thought they only had to be able to hit the ball full on not both sides??
Report paddletoe April 18, 2015 6:16 PM BST
I actually thought McGill was going to turn down the free ball because he didn't even seem sure it was and they are practise partners after all.
Report pandora1963 April 18, 2015 6:18 PM BST
well he could definitely hit it full on just not the extreme left hand side of the ball..so i had the rules wrong, i thought they had changed them
Report winsamsoon April 18, 2015 6:32 PM BST
There was only one snooker required, if he had played it softer and missed, he'd prob have left the red on.
Report trebor April 18, 2015 6:35 PM BST
The "full on" might be just for the miss rule?
Report tommo1000 April 19, 2015 6:58 PM BST
quite heavily commited on McGill, however fearing a McGuire fightback,he can`t possibly play as bad as yesterday I`ll wait to see how the first frame goes
Report winsamsoon April 19, 2015 7:05 PM BST
Fierce likeable lad McGill, and exagerated even more by Maguires sour puss. Think McGill will hold on, Milkins could settle better tho tonight and make the other game interesting

Signs were ominous from maguire in the opening session, shambles of a performance. That said, fancy this lad to give Selby a right game, maybe even win it.

Wouldn't say McGill has really choked, he wasn't exactly flying earlier. It's Maguire who gone from not being able to pot a ball to knocking in 50s.
Pressure bound to be getting to a debutant

Heard the commentaters say earlier the top 4 world champions all lost on debut at the crucible, I say fair play to McGill and Maflin, win or lose when ya compare them to the likes of Milkins and Walden. Think It's a bit rich calling them chokers cos they won 9 frames in their first game at Sheffield.

7/2 McGill to beat Selby,if he plays anywhere near like he did against Maguire he's no 7/2 shot infact he's probably the only rag that can possibly win it outright from what I've seen this season...

Great performance no doubt but allowed to play well by 2 players that were not, so jumping in with the hard earned has its risks.
I certainly loved his attitude and safety and bottle but the real question is, there are a good few players left that will take a better class match to him.
Selby won the title last year from a guy who lost it, who's game is a shadow of his great days no matter some good results and Selby has been struggling with a neck injury and trying to live up to his real best.
Having said that it will be very welcome to see him break through, the game is tired and needs refreshing, riddled with has-beens and very soon not to be's and serious questions to be answered by Trump and Robertson as to their aspirations of true greatness which over the top praise by guys that should know better.
It will be very interesting to see whether he has what it takes, he certainly has the game but great champion have something else.
He was worth a fiver at 55s but-----
