[i]'We released a number of memory leakage fixes this morning. Based upon the feedback from customers, we have been carrying out extensive investigation into both the horse racing homepage and the new in-play matchpage. Following this morning’s release, we’re confident there will be a considerable performance boost on these pages.

In the course of preparing these fixes, we've developed a host of tools that will help each of the various front-end teams identify and fix memory issues as part of the normal development process. We have also made sure our Quality Assurance team know how to test for these issues.

Seriously guys what have you been doing because your time hasn't been spent improving the performance of the site. I use the site for prolonged periods and performance degenerates the longer I use it . As someone has stated if you close your browser every hour say the stickiness/slowness disappears for a short period but then returns quicker each time. The problem is I like most punters will have several tabs open at once. form guides, results pages video links etc. so closing everything means logging into everything time and time again.

How many months is it actually going to take? because the last months 'work' by you has been a waste of time

Seems to be getting worse (for me at least) Yesterday had to re-boot half a dozen times; CPU usage up to 100% within a few minutes of restarting. (forum not open either)

The problem is definitely getting worse day-by-day.

Even having nothing but the main site up (no Forum, no other windows open) makes no difference at all. After 30 minutes maximum the site freezes (usually when you are trying to cancel a bet in-running) and it is fraying my nerves, as well as my wallet.

The fix is simple. Just give us a site where logging out, closing the window and re-opening Betfair does not involve minutes spent watching endless commands in the bottom left .... waiting for to load  ... waiting for betfair.arcadesh1t to load etc etc.

Does that not give you a clue as to how you have ruined your site as well as your company's reputation?

It's back to being awful again where you have to log off for a while. "Compatibility issue" comes up again in Vista, and on my main P.C, "there is a browser" issue has returned.

Why do we keep going backwards every few weeks? Sad

BCM- can I ask how seriously betfair are taking the problem of the memory leakage? I find it strange that you are still releasing new products (new in-play stuff for example) when the site is so unstable that it requires re-starting several times a day just to be able to use it. Surely solving the memory leakage problem should be your number 1 priority?

yep, well said tommycockles.  How many times do we have to tell you BF that we aren't impressed by garish pop-ups or the latest whizzy games launch...  If you have an overwhelming urge to produce such things perhaps you could restrict them to the facebook tweenies.

KC, the plan is obviously to concentrate on Betfair´s priorities of adding more and more bells and whistles in the shape of pop-ups, new games, a couple of new forum topics and of course points for prizes. Perhaps, at some time in the distant future, a plan will be made to look at the memory problems.

If it aint completely and utterly broke then don´t fix it.

From their own point of view the technical employees are better off keeping the memory leakage disaster in place.

Remember that as things stand, not only is Betfair losing vast amounts of trade from existing customers who either cannot access the site or who have lost their banks through the site freezing in-running; but more crucially they are gaining no new customers, since the latter just give up when the site continually freezes and crashes their computer.

And what is the answer to a lack of new customers? Why, technical innovations, pop-ups, games, bells and whistles of course!

If the the technical employees just keep posting "The memory leakage problem is solved" every few weeks on the Service page, as is their current policy, then any of the few Betfair shareholders aware of the disaster caused by the technical dept will be satisfied, and the employees are guaranteed plenty of "development" work for the future trying to entice new money to the site.

My impression is that this problem is getting worse. The site degenerates after just a few minutes of use now, I find, and improves only for a decreasingly short period after clearing the cache each time.

I found the site more or less unusable over the weekend, so gave up trying.

This has gone on long enough now, we could take the excuses and blagging for the first month or so, not any more.
The site has gone from being the elite betting site on earth, to some two bit scuzzy crap you have to log out of every twenty minutes to just be able to bet.

Please sort it out.

I have no problems with any other website I look at.

This is way beyond a joke now! During racing I usually get 1-1.5 hours with BF open before it crashes - if I also use BF Rapid it will be less. If I dare open the forum pop-up all my browsers crash after 5-10 minutes. Usually of course it will crash halfway through a race, when I´m just about to place a bet. For weeks and weeks. EVERY. SINGLE. FUC*ING. DAY.

My days of bothering with the forum are numbered. And as soon as BDaq or other comes along and has reasonable liquidity - which BF doesn´t have until half an hour before race time these days - I will be off. After 10 years betting on here.

For all BCMs caring words, actions speak much louder - especially when it comes to winning or losing one´s hard earned.

Betfair please take note: once the exodus begins your customers won´t come back.

Im wondering when a Betfair tech last used this site. The trouble is they probably never used it when it wasn't terrible, so have nothing to compare it with.

I last a bit longer than some of those above, but it's definitely getting worse.

Yeah, site is very laggy and much worse than it used to be back in 2009 / 2010. Costs some people a lot of money when the browser freezes up.

Well, I've now stopped punting full-stop on horse racing.

The site continually slows or freezes and just leaves me with uncancellable in-running bets that get picked off.

It was costing me a fortune, so I stopped on Monday and there won't be one single horse racing bet from me on here again.

Betfair Community Manager can presumably cross-reference my account and discover just how much the Technical Dept's ignorant acceptance of memory leakage is now costing Betfair in lost commission from me alone.

Mind you, it's a bank holiday weekend, so how likely is it that anyone responsible is around to care? Working for Betfair IT must be a hoot. Just imagine boasting to your mates how you've nailed this cushy number with an employer who never, ever cares or even notices when you permanently wreck his website and screw up his business.

Worse than ever, site so so slow and at times unusable.

I am at my wits end trying to navigate various football markets while the daft pointless graphics load. I don't need to know what the prices are in the Correct Score market while I'm trying in vain to navigate to that page!!!

But again nobody listens.......

And in a month or so I will post here again......

And then will follow more empty promises about fixing this and that and how every customer is valued........

Nothing will change until Betfair gets some decent competition.

Betfair Community Manager - Serious question (and I can assure you it is) -
Do you just show you care to fulfill your job description/contract?
Or do you really care and are regularly banging your head against the wall sharing in our frustration?

And please please please pretty please answer this -

Why oh why oh why can the football graphic page (when you select a game from the left menu) not be removed until it works properly?

Just my pennyworth..

I've tried FF, Chrome, IE, the latest versions and it's all the same. Fast then getting slower and slower until I log out after hour and half and start again.

I am not doing anything fancy, just the main site and perhaps 3 tabs of match odds open.

i have 3gb of Ram, betfair can occupy 1gb of that before I close and start again. The whole site becomes sticky hanging etc.

It doesn't happen with other sites, usage climbing through the roof.

Hope you fix it cos it's a pain.

Betfair Community Manager - can you confirm that the problem users have been reporting on this thread has been fully reported to the Betfair IT team and is being investigated?

I think if you read through the different postings on this thread, one theme yet again stands out: people are asking Betfair to please improve the way in which the Company communicates with its customers.

The various site performance problems are frustrating for users, but I think most people would accept problems of this kind are going to occur from time to time with a complex, highly used site like Betfair. What is utterly incomprehensible to me, and I imagine to many other users, is why Betfair for years now have been so poor at communicating with users when site performance problems have been reported.

Does no one with any authority within the Betfair organisation read the postings on the Site Feedback forum? What is the point of a Site Feedback forum if no feedback is received from the Company when customers use the forum to report problems they are experiencing with the site?

BCM2 - some more feedback on this issue would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am still finding the same problems with the site. Performance degrades after 20-30 minutes of use; after 40-50 minutes of use, it the site has become so slow to use, I have to log out, clear cache, and come back to restore functionality. The time interval during which the site performance degrades becomes progressively shorter after that.

I get the memory leaks (FF4) but I partly blame FF for this.
Disabling Flash seems to help.

Since FF4 came out, the Betfair loss indicator ( the thing that shows
a "what if" situation as you place bets) has been totally jiggered. It
worked in FF3 so I assume there's some sort of incompatibility.

The mind boggles at why they did this. Not only is it less obvious what it means but someone actually sat down, thought that up, forwarded it to the relevant IT guy who then had to find the bit of code (which given that it's taken 11 years to fix the -£0.01 rounding bug isn't as trivial here as some places) and then change the word without causing a downtime (Again, something you'd consider easy if you'd never used Betfair)

Juts adding my name to the list.

The site slow-down has definitely got a lot worse in recent months.
It works ok for about an hour before it starts to become noticeable.
Rebooting regularly has become a way of life because of Betfair.

That one's only been broken since they put in the +/- buttons in about 2006 Mully. Before that you could add them via customize markets (you still can, but there's about a 20% chance of it deleting all your existing ones if you do)

Betfair have known about this one all that time too, it's one of the worst ones for me :(

BCM, just thought I'd mention two things.
  Firstly, when ever I now need to log out and back in again due to the memory leakage, the logging out procedure only takes a few seconds now. It could take up to a few minutes a few weeks ago. Whether this is down to some fix from your tech guys or because it's down to the fact that I upgraded IE to version 9(I think) a few weeks ago, I don't know.
  Another thing that I don't think have been mentioned by anyone is that when the memory leakage has build up making things slower, it also fukk up the search option one get by clicking Ctrl/F. This search option is fast and may only take fractions of a second early after a log in, but as memory use builds up it gets gradually slower.  Just timed it before the latest logout/login and it took more than a minute before the site responded to the word I typed into the search box.

Having been having very similar problems to others on here, the least problematic peformance I have been able to get is by using google chrome and reducing the number of plugins it has enabled to pretty much the bare minimum.
To disable plugins -
type about:plugins  into the google chrome address bar and proceed to 'disable' anything that doesn't look to be required, it's very easy to re-enable anything that you need to.

Obviously don't disable any security related software add ons I guess -
unless someone more tech minded can explain any risk in doing any of this it might be worth a try,
it's by far the best site performance I've been able to get having been doing my nut with firefox and IE whirring away constantly.

Yep. My optimism was misfounded. The normal memory usage for FF4.01 with BF open in 2 tabs
(one tab for sports, the other for community) is 400MB. I normally have to restart FF a few
times a day to keep things at a manageable speed. My PC has 4GB of RAM.

4 months now and we've not heard a dickie bird! A public acknowledgment  of the problems would undoubtedly affect the share price but at least take steps to get it fixed in a timely manner. This issue has been around since the start of the year

Betfair is seriously taking the p1ss out of their customers!

Does anyone have the email address for David Yu the CEO because emailing the help desk and posting on here has got us know where.

The other option is to turn up at the AGM and ask the questions there. Does anyone know when that is?

Well here's a stupid fix for it, on chrome..

Close forum, close betfair, not by logging out but on the red cross thing you use to close a page.

Then hit Betfair in your bookmarks. You're still logged in but the Betfair memory in your cache is back to normal.

Thank you for your msg BCM2 but with all due respect this is an issue posted by me on an open forum and that is where I would like to read any responses to that. I do not wish to be part of any betfair 'cover up' this has gone on long enough and it is time we ALL received some answers.

I can assure you that while some responses are flipant, this is an extremely serious matter that has imply become laughable. All we are after is some honesty here.

As soon as you are logged in Betfair will drop 82 cookies onto your PC. This seems way too many.

Why do so many cookies need to be used, when all I want to do is to access the horseracing markets and sometimes the community?

Another problem is that the html, css, javascript files are not optimal. File compression will help hell of a lot and even just removing blank lines will help memory a small bit.

The home page opens around 15 javascript files. Whilst the serving platform may be compressing the transmission of those files, the files themselves are not optimised.

I understand that when a platform is in constant development that it is far easier for maintenance and bug fixing to use raw un-optimised files. But memory leakage is a real problem and just compressing code, removing duplicates will help hell of a lot.

Betfair are relying on caching, and they do use compression in transmission in the hope that this will speed up data being served. However, it does nothing to help where the actual memory is bloated and wasted: the end users PC.

Here's a couple of examples.

This file is 423k. Packing it will reduce it to 221k. Base62 encoding will reduce further to 131k

This is 51.7k as-is but can be reduced to 35k by optimising

During his peak, when he dominated the charts with various acts, Pete Waterman said that despite all the top of the range technology he had at his fingertips, he still designed records to sound good coming out of a single mono speaker in an '87 Ford Transit van.

The same applies here. Whatever looks good, slick, and fast on a Betfair developer's desktop may not look so good on a home users PC.

I loathe having to load Betfair and watch my screen freeze within minutes.

I could never recommend this site to any newcomer. It is just a frustrating and unpleasant experience.

What a site betfair has now become.

Takes about 5 minutes to log in(for the first time each day)

Users have to close browsers then reopen browsers every 20 or so minutes just to be able to use the site

Then if you are very successful (which I am not) you have to give betfair god knows how much money in premium charges

What is next?

It's can be tough out there dealing with this on your own.

Ever since the introduction of the 'new Betfair header' a few days ago - which no one but the Betfair IT bods (and perhaps those that work in Betfair Towers) give  a damn about, the site is working like a slug on a sloth's back.

Alas, not for the first time.

It's unbelievable how a company like Betfair, which was founded online and prided itself on trust and reliabilty seem to have completly abandoned all principles in this regard.

Unfathomable really, such a shame.  It must put new people off, I'm sure, nothing worse than a website that doesn't work properly.

I'm trying my best to keep with the programme and have been using the new site for the past week or two but at the moment it won't work and just defaults to the old site.

'A slug on a sloth's back' is exactly how I would describe things just now, the new header does seem to have sent things backwards. Still it looks pretty with all it's different shades of blue and that is the Betfair management's top priority I guess.

Yes Frank. It seems 'the bells and whistles' are the most important things to the minds of Betfair employees.

Take note Betfair: They're not.

The site is even worse today.
