I used to work for NATS, the air traffic control company. All our control centres used to have 2 separate mains feeds coming from different sources and taking diverse routes into the buildings and around the buildings. We also had batteries so that the computers didn't drop out during a switchover of mains supplies.
The airlines would have rightly slaughtered us if we were so underprepared for a substation fire.

It is incredulous how this can happen. Heathrow is such an important national asset it should not be in private hands imho
I remember the days of booking holidays on the cheap. Not anymore. I get a package incorporating flights, hotels and transfers and obv’s a good insurance policy ( annual ).
Even European jaunts I have started booking the hotel through the airline or Eurostar and not booking.com or Airbnb to save a couple of shekels.
It is a nightmare. I don’t like airlines much but have every sympathy in this instance.
One thing they have not even mentioned is workers who have to clock in or zero hours workers, shop leaseholders, associated small businesses etc.
The power of diversity eh Nobs!It is incredulous how this can happen. Heathrow is such an important national asset it should not be in private hands imhoI remember the days of booking holidays on the cheap. Not anymore. I get a package incorporating
Even if it was Russia the utility supplies to all major UK airports and other vital assets should be designed to be diverse enough to withstand a little terrorism.

Incredible isn’t it. You have a point. It’s be plenty travelling around just for football this weekend. Can you imagine a rugby weekend in say Italy. The knock on effects may cause carnage too.

NATS and other european ATC providers would never undertake system upgrades or updates on big footballing nights.
They'd also avoid easter, half terms, summer, & Christmas

Was 100 planes in the Air around Heathrow at one stage ,as Nob says how can this Happen ?
That was my first thought!Russians ? Did they fire a Missile I dont recall Russians Attacking things up in the UK , Usually Gas and Umberellas used Was 100 planes in the Air around Heathrow at one stage ,as Nob says how can this Happen ?
Russia doesn't need to fire missiles. They prefer hire (petty) criminals, locals and the like for their state sponsored terrorism amongst our midst. Like they did with the arson of a warehouse in London last year.

Though accidents of course happen. While Russia loves to blow up and sabotage our things and stir trouble, occasionally things just break or get damaged involuntarily.

If it was the the Big Bad Bear , might have something to do with Sir Twaddle of the Knee threatening to send thousands of our Troops to Ukraine Edy , what you think ?
If that is the case we could be in serious Trouble Edy ,I doubt The Big Bad bear will stop at one attack

Russia also pays reasonably ok for somewhat petty things like destroying cars from what I hear. Just join some telegram group for free thinking understanders of Russian aggression, write some nice posts about the great Führer or negative ones about Zelenskyy and you would hopefully be considered for a new job.

But now Russia knows major infrastructure assets in the UK have single points of failure I'm sure they will be exploring the possibilities.

Q - How can the Department of Transport allow Heathrow to not have a resilient power supply?
A - The minister in charge has never worked in industry and was busy shagging his intern anyway.

Meanwhile, Reform UK MP Richard Tice blamed the breakdown on Heathrow’s decision to replace its diesel generators with a biomass-powered system in a bid to meet environmental targets.
Speaking on GB News, Tice said, “Critical infrastructure like that obviously needs a backup and I can exclusively reveal to you this morning that Heathrow changed its backup systems to be net zero compliant. It got rid of their diesel generators and moved to a biomass generator which was designed not to completely replace the grid, but work alongside the grid.”
He added, “Their net zero compliant backup system has completely failed in its core function at the first time of asking. It beggar’s belief.”
Unreal , if this is true serious questions need to be asked about what is going on that this could be allowed to happen

Are we sure backup solutions at airports, be it diesel or woodship burning, are otherwise designed to provide enough power to run an entire airport to function normally?
I have some doubts....

It should be able to survive short outages for sure. It should also be able to keep lights on for e.g. planes to be able to land.
I was merely wondering if planning at airports really normally provides for a scenario where power is completely cut and diesel generators or woodchip burners have to provide enough power for a long time to run the entire friggin' airport. That's a lot of generators and a lot of fuel for something that....happens once a century?

In its net zero plan, published in 2022, Heathrow said: “Stand-by generators currently operate using diesel as they need an independent power source to maintain resilient operations. They are used predominantly as back-up power for airfield ground lighting.
So...yeah....are we absolutely certain that airports usually have the large diesel capacities for long-time complete function, or near complete function, or are we just playing ideological bad faith stuff here because we don't like net zero?
To quote The Daily Telegraph:In its net zero plan, published in 2022, Heathrow said: “Stand-by generators currently operate using diesel as they need an independent power source to maintain resilient operations. They are used predominantly as back-
obviously yes. have you seen the docu series Chernobyl? if nuclear power stations suffer a power cut, they still need to operate basic functions or else there's nuclear meltdown. critical infrastructure needs to be able to maintain basic operation in a crisis.

it can be done, and is done. power cuts aren't new. I have never heard of a major airport completely shutting down due a local power cut. like ever, in 40 years

...but is that because all the airports have massive generator capacities, of course fueled with diesel instead of woodchips, or because they were able to e.g. reroute electricity as they were better connected to the national grid?

I would assume back up is tailored to the local infrastructure. The clue is in the name, they were claiming this morning that the back up was affected by the fire. Which is BS.

Backup can be many things. I can feel good about installing a battery in my Raspberry Pi to spare it from short outages of power. It will make my Pi survive the vast majority of cases. It will not have my Pi survive a day without electricity from the plug.
Do I nonetheless have a solution that I can rightly call a backup power plan? Absolutely I can.
I quoted from the Daily Telegraph above, which in turn quoted from some guideline on what the then current diesel generators provided for. That says they are predominantly there for ground lighting. Maybe in the next days we will find out if the diesel generators of old would have been able to keep this really big airport running somewhat normally or if we are just playing silly ideological games here regarding the backup system now burning wood instead of diesel.

I'm pretty sure whatever turns out to be the case, most people who now go on about the backup generators being super bad net zero don't really know either as of now and are indeed just out to play little ideological games from a base of very little actual knowledge.
