The US is expelling South Africa's ambassador to Washington, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio describing him as a "race-baiting politician".

In a post on X, Rubio accused Ebrahim Rasool of hating the US and President Donald Trump, and said the ambassador was "no longer welcome in our great country".

The office for South Africa's president on Saturday called the decision "regrettable", adding that the country remained committed to building a mutually beneficial relationship with the US.

The rare move by the US marks the latest development in rising tensions between the two countries.

While lower-ranking diplomats are sometimes expelled, it's highly unusual in the US for it to happen to a more senior official.

In his post on Friday, Rubio linked to an article from the right-wing outlet Breitbart that quoted some of Rasool's recent remarks made during an online lecture about the Trump administration.

At the event, Rasool said Trump was "mobilising a supremacism" and trying to "project white victimhood as a dog whistle" as the white population faced becoming a minority in the US.

"We see it in the domestic politics of the USA, the Maga movement as a response not simply to a supremacist instinct, but to very clear data that shows great demographic shifts in the USA in which the voting electorate in the USA is projected to become 48% white," he said.

Report Cider March 15, 2025 7:30 PM GMT
You're confusing the concept of free speech with no consequences from what you are free to say. Presumably 'Ebrahim Rasool' isn't being thrown in jail.

I can't go around slating and slagging the company I work for on twatter for example, or else I could face sanctions, including loss of employment. That has nothing to do with the concept of free speech.
Report Cider March 15, 2025 7:31 PM GMT
It isn't all that complicated, tbf.

I think people understand. They just find it funny with in particular MAGAs and the like constantly and deliberately confusing consequences with their free speech being unjustly limited.
Report Cider March 15, 2025 8:11 PM GMT
A_T self evidently doesn't understand, as demonstrated by the post @6:15PM

A Labour MP lost the whip as they made racist comments about another MP. feck all to do with free speech. just like this guy, people are free to be racist, but they might lose their job (or face other work related sanctions)

Depends on whether someone understood Vance's criticism as justified remarks or the usual MAGA hypocrisy and deliberately misconstrued remarks about others supposedly being free speech curbing, cancelling meanies.
Report Cider March 15, 2025 8:29 PM GMT
No. Rasool was a diplomat. If you went to the US and made the same comments, you would face no sanctions.

It isn't all that complicated, tbf.

Neither would you if you went to Germany. Guess Vance's remarks about free speech in Europe was really just the usual MAGA stuff where they confuse consequence culture with free speech violations.

Deliberately of course. They know better.

A_T isn't referencing Germany.

He is (rather bizarrely) claiming that a diplomat being slung out of the country he's a diplomat in for being openly critical of that country's administration is somehow evidence of a lack of free speech.

It's pretty obvious [again]. He got slung out because of the position he held when he said it. He's now free to say whatever he wants ;)
Report edy March 15, 2025 8:40 PM GMT
Or evidence of the MAGA being their usual hypocrites when it comes to consequence culture, which they like to label violations of free speech.
Report edy March 15, 2025 8:42 PM GMT
Against their own better knowledge.
Report Cider March 15, 2025 8:43 PM GMT
Nope. If you want to slag of a country's administration, don't accept an offer to be a diplomat in said country (and expect to retain the privilege).
Report edy March 15, 2025 8:43 PM GMT
I'm not arguing against that there should not be consequences for diplomats (or others).
Report edy March 15, 2025 8:45 PM GMT
MAGAs just, for years now, love to yadda about FREE SPEECH when they perfectly know it aren't free speech things, but rather consequence and accountability things.
Report edy March 15, 2025 8:46 PM GMT
And before that background, actions such as the expelling of this diplomat become a tad ironic.

I like this logic, it solves the whole misinformation problem.

Anytime someone says something wrong, lets just assume that its an ironic joke mocking the hypocrisy of their political opponents. Theres no lying anymore its just satirical wit that went over your head.

Who is saying what? Ukraine started the war and Zelensky is a dictator? Hunter Bidens laptop went missing though and by fook i have it in for ya!

Not too dissimilar to South Africa imo,you had the balls to stand up for what was morally right in Palestine, but   not in the agenda and you can't do it cos we sez so!
Report lapsy pa March 15, 2025 11:05 PM GMT
You now cannot seem to argue against lies and pure BS,that is the end of US 'free speech' the rest is lick harsing, you can put my thoughts on a UK forum,i would worry if not, after you though in the states methinks.

How ironic.

Race baiting is just a way of attempting to circumvent the incitement laws. When Chris Cuomo said  "Please, Show Me Where It Says That Protests Are Supposed To Be Polite And Peaceful" he had the plausible deniability of being a race baiter. He could say no I wasn't trying to incite violence, I was just racebaiting. A likely story, but he should still be prosecuted for incitement.

I told you about that here first clown shoes

I was just a little surprised it took so long to get the President Musk and Tesla protests going. I was pretty sure Tesla’s would be vandalised in the streets but didn’t think people would firebomb dealerships and charging units. Starlink under pressure too.

Personally I think parties should band together and launch a series of premptive actions against Amrika. I would add a 200% tariff on all Tesla spare parts rendering them virtually uninsurable.

I would  Canada to stop supplies of Power to America

I would ask The Convicts to embargo all rate earth metals and Cobalt and Lithium to Amrika.

The rest could put 50% tariffs on all Amrikan food products

Block Facebook and Instagram

Let’s see how the American public would react to that

Musk is already backing down and when he’s down he grovels Wink

I intend to see him grovel
