Don't think Merkel can really be made responsible for all the Albanians wanting to go to the UK. It's more likely that Russia runs ads and disinformation campaigns there about how glorious the UK is for Albanians and what wonders await. Until France are willing to stop them leaving, it will keep getting worse. France does not want the migrants there so they look the other way so long as they head for UK. Public opinion here will not support sinking the boats when they enter UK waters and France won't allow them back so it will continue.

Sinking them would also kind of violate international marine law and such.

That might well be, but your post about half a million is still laughable. In each of the past years you never cracked even a tenth of that in irregular boat migration. There was a very similar thread from tobermory a few years ago where he also took some peak day and made a most glorious calculation of how many this means over a full year. He of course ended up being wrong by a factor of 10 or so.

Now, it is of course a valid position that 35k to 50k boat people is also (far) too much, but why the ultra silly calculations? You are bound to also be off by a factor between 5 to 15 at least. Off by like 400k (out of the 500k prediction) or more.

Just...why? You must know that there is literally no chance for that many boat people to the UK unless maybe Russia conquers the rest of Ukraine. Though those would probably not get to the UK as irregular boat people. You must know your prediction is going to way, way, way off.

Feel free to bump this early next year when the numbers are released and you were not way, way, way off with your half a million boat people.

1,000 on a day in November makes 500,000 next year quite likely.

The only limit is the hassle of getting here, so the numbers will be ultimately be determined by people in the Asia/Africa.

Comparing the date of the thread with the data of the time series that the UK government provides you were probably referring to the 1250 arrivals on November 11, but...really it should probably be kind of up to you to know what date ...well....you were referring to.

It ended up being a bit fewer than 47,000 recorded channel crossings in 2022 btw.

What I didn't appreciate was that November is actually more like the peak of arrivals, rather than a more difficult time.

I guess the need to cross the Med first means that journey has to be done in the late spring/ summer, then they take a while to get up to the channel.

But tens of thousands is way more than enough as it is, and there is no limiting factor that is going to kick in at some point to prevent it getting to the hundreds of thousands at some point.

With the dismantling of USAID by Musk and Trump, maybe migratory pressure out of Africa will be big enough for hundreds of thousands to go to the UK on small boats in a decade or two indeed.
