Err, that just pushes up prices, and rent as landlords have huge reserves.

Outbidding buyers forces buyers to pay higher rent, if they bid up property
and landlords pay more then the upshot is higher rent for losing bidder.
Report SirNorbertClarke October 29, 2024 7:42 PM GMT
If landlords are indeed outbidding buyers then the buyers needs to bid more

No. The government needs to slash tax relief for landlords or even things up by reintroducing MIRAS for the workers Happy

So basically tax payers pick up yet another bill, and the sh1tehole properties remain just that, because it's not worthwhile for a speculator to get involved.

Like they do with tax deductible costs for landlords?
Report Johnny The Guesser October 30, 2024 7:15 AM GMT
What costs do you  think landlords should not be able to deduct ?

They pay stamp duty , and their loan interest is already restricted. If there is little prospect of a profit then the money moves elsewhere.

Consequently plenty are giving up the game and leaving their dough in the bank for an easy 5%.  Properties needing TLC lie empty or are not refurbished - How does that help the family looking for a nice place to live when there is already a housing shortage ?
Report SirNorbertClarke October 30, 2024 8:12 AM GMT
Landlords should exactly the same tax relief as tennents, none.
Report PorcupineorPineapple October 30, 2024 9:25 AM GMT
So a landlord who can no longer make the rental game pay due to this mean government, isn't going to sell it, but simply let it sit empty and rot?
Report Cider October 30, 2024 9:30 AM GMT
When rental properties are dumped on the market, rental prices in the area go up. Eventually the yield will still make it viable eventually, in spite of the severe taxation and legislation.
Report Cider October 30, 2024 9:31 AM GMT
I've not run the numbers but you'd probably need 10% to take the risk.
Report PorcupineorPineapple October 30, 2024 9:34 AM GMT

Report SirNorbertClarke October 30, 2024 9:49 AM GMT
Landlords should not get tax relief on repairs or renovations. Treat them exactly like owners and tenants.
Report Cider October 30, 2024 10:17 AM GMT
Yes it should moderate the selling price of property. Property has been pretty stagnant since interest rates normalised. Though there are multiple factors impacting house prices, rental is more directly correlated with local supply and demand.

Savers face a cut to the tax-free lump sum they can take from their pensions, under plans being considered by the Chancellor.

The Telegraph understands that government officials have asked one of Britain’s top pension providers to assess the impact of cutting the tax-free lump sum to £100,000, a third of the current limit.

If Labour were really serious about taking people out of poverty they would have increased the minimum wage to £15 an hour which was a motion that the Unite Union put forward at a Labour press conference 18 months ago and was passed by the members, increasing it in general was not even one of his 10 pledges when he became leader, one MP resigned when he was asked to argue against the rise. The rise is 39p less than the real living wage outside of London and £1.64 less than inside London, even at the real living wage people are still just working to live rather than living to work.

There are many people that send their kids to Private schools and they are not all high fliers who work in their city, some are parents that work all the hours God sends just to be able to afford the tuition fees, good chance some will have to  send them back to poorly run state schools.
