Ya had a big deep bowl of water with about 12 apples in it and in the apples a 3d or 6d or maybe one with a shilling in it, you had to dunk your head in it and pick one out by the teeth. and my luck was picking the apple with no money in it. Followed with a slice of barm brack and off down to proddie wadds (protestant graveyard) to see the banshee which we never saw.

Mam used to coat apples in toffee, well sticky melted sugar.
And we used to put the uncoated apples in flour bucket, not water, but none had money in. Then we would go round asking penny for the lantern, practice for penny for the guy... |
