Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will appoint the former Conservative Justice Secretary David Gauke to lead a review of prison sentencing, the BBC has confirmed.

The Labour Party said in its general election manifesto it would establish a review of sentencing “to ensure it is brought up to date”.

The BBC reported earlier this month that Gauke was the frontrunner to lead the review.

His appointment is expected to be announced on Tuesday by Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood.

Gauke was justice secretary under Theresa May from January 2018 to July 2019.

He then broke with the Conservative Party over Brexit, and stood unsuccessfully as an independent candidate at the 2019 general election. In July he rejoined the Conservative Party.

Gauke has previously suggested that jail terms of less than six months should be scrapped.

Let's hope he gets his own way...

As long as they don't let out violent scumbags, there are enough wandering the streets alreadym

Why is a bummer who likes to go to pop concerts for free appointing this guy?

Think he's considered one of the brighter ones isn't he and he's obviously got experience in justice so could be a good appointment.

That sounds fantastic.

He's more or less said what he would do.

So hopefully his review goes down that route.

I'm biased, obviously, on sentences, and agree with his thoughts.

Middle ground, and slightly controversial, maybe more than slightly,
but it's time to end these jail terms when the better solution can
be found elsewhere. Free up cells for more dangerous types.

Big thing for me is that prison needs to emphasise rehabilitation over simple punishment. At the end of the day, 99.99% are gonna be back out on our streets and we need to do better at stopping them re-offending.

Violent pikey thugs don't and won't ever change. It's bred in them.

Gauke another leftie that was somehow in office during a supposedly right wing government.

'Prison doesn't work' is one of the biggest left wing myths.....

Typically....

1st offence: community service - commits more crimes
2nd offence: community service - commits more crimes
3rd offence: community service - commits more crimes
4th offence: 6 months prison - serves 6 weeks, early release, commits another crime

At which point it is seen as proof that 'prison doesn't work' and maybe should try community service Crazy

Yep and keeping them out for minor stuff might see them
rehabilitated out of jail.

Some ain't getting out, and can you rehabilitate some of
the folk that come out to reoffend.

Still need to try, of course, and have better infrastructure
to support those trying to turn their lives around.

Of course the community service is skipped entirely for facebook villains

You mean those promoting burning people.

Your racist side doesn't deserve jail, lock up the others.
