Not quite 40 years, it was previously broadcast on BBC Four again in 2003.

worth a watch if you haven't seen it - they made a point of using some (of it's era) expertise to try and keep the narrative realistic..

I remember when they filmed that
Sheffield 84, I recognised nearly all the areas, looks nowt like that now.
That primary schoolyard got no white kids in it anymore for a start.
And the council themselves flattened the town hall Eggbox building.
There is no industry to bomb, they shut it down at the time they filmed that.

Things to note.
The run up to a bomb would be absolutely nothing like they implied
‘Hospitals clear out in preparation’ pmsl, there is no spare capacity, what they going to do, tip beds out onto the street?
Besides, you’ll get the 5 min warning and that’s all, that will be the first you heard that a nuke was actually going to be detonated
Non of this prepping.
That made me smile ‘known subversives arrested’

Besides, always remember…..the combined attack from all nuclear allied countries will mean no westerner dies in vain.
I’d settle down happy with that.

Thought it was a brilliant piece of filmmaking ,very harrowing to watch ,well acted ,easy to pick holes in it ,but they had a list of scientists as long as your arm who contributed .Well worth watching.

Times change.
For a start nuking Sheffield would be a waste of a nuke, it’s not the powerhouse of industry it was during real wars.
Second, it’s now a ‘University city’ where kids contemplate their gender for a living.
Then there’s the fact areas that were decent back in the 80’s are now utter dumps, that actually look like they were bombed, where foreigners live as the do in their native lands with rubbish all over.
Then there’s the economy. Everything now is based on total capacity and ‘just in time’ provision, there’s no slack anywhere, no luxury of planning.
Everything runs as though it’s been in perpetual war already.
And as far as telegraphing the likelihood of nuking somewhere is concerned that’s for the birds
The people who talk about nuking, don’t. The ones that don’t warn anyone, they the ones that will.

Film made 40 years ago has some issues with relevance to the world today.

The point of the film went right into dusty's bin. I didn't watch the film last night, but have seen it several times, including when it was released. A powerful dramatisation of  what could occur. Sheffield, at the time, was a good target to choose and if memory serves, there was a build up of tensions, which in itself was telegraphing the fact that a strike was possible and to be prepared. I'll say no more to avoid spoilers, but dusty, take a breather mate.

I’m not criticising the drama as a film, though bleak, but that’s Barry Hines for you.
Kestrel for a Knave (KES) was also gritty and northern, and the more celebrated of the two.

My point was that the reality of Sheffield being a target has passed, they ruined it without the bomb.

Indeed they did and the film was made smack bang in the middle of Thatcher's reign, with Steel and Coal being two of the first to go. If made just 5 years later Sheffield probably wouldn't have been an obvious choice.

Watched it on the player,maybe the wrong choice of word but thought it was very good,didn't 'age' that much either.

Scaremongering rather than scary.

On the recommendation of my fellow forumites, I've just watched this film on I Player. It's interesting how the whole situation is imagined. The fact is that if a nuclear attack on the UK was successful, the result is unimaginable. Any survivors would not be like the survivors in the film, & they'd wish they hadn't survived such would be the impossibility of life.

There would probably be less survivors today, given the increased power and coverage. Let's hope we never find out.

Exactly Mr Aspro. I think the danger in the UK is from within rather than from any foreign power. I remember a film from long ago which I saw in the cinema called It Happened Here. It imagined Germany winning the 2nd World War.
