Dover sole when you can find it. I've seen Norwegian turbot at over £50 a kilo.
Fish was a staple in the years following WW2 and a cheap source of protein. Something must have happened after 1970 to make it become so expensive.

Sardines are remarkably cheap still...(just saying) but price of Cod fillets even, remarkable these days compared to my younger days..

Cod I suppose overfished at one point to danger of long term scarcity..population growth and often no plan for keeping fish populations allied to a few man made environment disasters (major oil spills, chemical dumping etc) maybe a factor ?  purely guesswork on my part.

4 fillets of Plaice, 4 fillets of Lemon sole (all quite smallish) bought a month ago off the fella in Cornmarket St Cork City(only there Sat mornings, mightn't be there if the boat doesn't go with bad weather) for 11 euro, for nothing.

Love a bit of plaice...never feels great value at the regular outlets but still take the option at times..
poultry and red meat of a disgraceful quality in the supermarkets these days..Plain

mackerel and kippers, one portion of each every week, usually for breakfast. Ready-to-eat prawns once a fortnight, occasionally red salmon, with the rare cod & chips take-away when in the mood. Oh and I always have a tin of sardines in the cupboard for a snack.

Love grilled sardines on toast with melted cheddar on top

I see there is a guy doing salmon fish suppers in Scotland, bombing out the door, I'd say they would be dear too, close to a score I'd guess.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Irish version:

If you give a man a picture of a fish, he will spout delusional sh1te on an internet forum every day, until the end of his bitter, miserable lifetime.

made tuna (tinned) pasta last night, with tomatoes and pickled onions, no mayonnaise, i hate mayonnaise, very healthy, very cheap, very filling
Report Whisperingdeath October 17, 2024 4:12 PM BST
Swordfish steak in tomato juice with olive oil, capers, anchovies, black olives, spring onions, red chillies? Cover dish in foil and bake for maybe 20 mins.

Serve with sautéed lemon potatoes, broccoli or French beans, pan fried courgette in butter, asparagus pan fried in butter. Bottle of Marlboro Sauvignon Blanc.

Serve with cricket on the TV.

Swordfish is a bit on the meaty side, Whispering, you are going to need two bottles of that wine.

I tend to prefer it in summer Foinavon

When I watch The Ashes in Aus I tend to go for a ribeye washed with Barossa Shiraz

I also quite like skate wing in brown butter
Report Foinavon October 17, 2024 9:40 PM BST
Mrs F used to cook snappers regularly, they are the best of fish but she now says the bones are too dangerous Sad Skate wing in black butter is very French. The fish is nice but I'm not keen on butter.
Are you watching the two Tests that are in progress? India came a cropper this morning after all that rain. Pant got a nasty blow too.
