Why would any one get involved with any product if they were told that 1 in 5 were faulty ?

Funnily enough I switched to a new supplier/contract that did not implicate getting a 'smart' meter installed. But within a month they still spammed me for one.

Would make absolutely zero difference to my life so why would I opt out of something that has worked for over a decade, and opt into something that carries a proven risk.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Proven risk?

I have a water meter, had no choice. Now they know when I take a shower/bath each day, proven when I check the website Blush

The Government's estimate of how many domestic smart meters are not working is around 10%. Yet this only includes the narrow definition of smart meters in 'dumb' mode (ie, not sending automatic readings to the supplier).

Our latest MSE research (via statistically representative polling), which asked people if their smart meters work, shows 19% say theirs don't work. The reason this is so much higher is that it includes everything people feel has gone wrong, including in-home displays that won't communicate or connect, incorrect data on tariffs or usage, and prepay top-ups that don't register correctly. These aren't in the official stats.

I haven't had a smart meter yet and have resisted all contact, which is bordering on weekly; in fact, I've had a text and email in this past week. It is incessant.

I've even had a guy knock on my door and say I would be fined if I didn't have one fitted by January 1st (last year). Phoned my provider who said this is not true, yet their reps are knocking and saying it is. I've got him captured on a Ring doorbell, but my mic is f*cked and couldn't prove what he actually said; nevertheless, I said "you do know you're being recorded?" but he didn't care. Mentioned this on a previous thread about these.

This happened to Mother Mes after it stopped reading the gas so only sent her bills for electric readings, when it caught up they then had to estimate her gas usage which was way way higher than what her average had been that time of year in years gone by, she said she'd be leaving the supplier, they didn't budge, which meant long term they lost out. They want these smart metres to stop the non payers not pay but still use the energy, but it's affected genuine customers instead, I've made a thread before about the levels of harassment, reminds me of the constant vaccine letters and texts I used to get from the NHS.

I got one, it gave me incorrect readings and costs.

British gas wouldn't fix it so I switched to ovo
and new one works beautifully.

Don't need a tin foil hat and likely it saves me a few
quid a year because of raised awareness.

British gas did give me a super low tariff for getting it
and I switched over during period I was on price cap
so no loss.

Mother in law is still with British gas, her meter
works perfectly and has done for years. We were going
to switch her but her best option has always been to renew
on their fixed tariff. She's on different renewal
timings to us.

The problem is if these go wrong you are then on the Phone to Customer service if you can get through ,then the real chaos Begins

I worked for NPOWER they renewed their IT system has to be biggest disaster IT wise in history

No wonder they are no more

Households are being urged to submit meter readings to their energy firm before 1 October, to avoid overpaying by a collective £186million.

The average home currently pays energy bills of £1,568 a year, with prices limited by the Ofgem price cap.

But this will rise to £1,717 from 1 October, or 10 per cent, for those on variable-rate energy deals regulated by the price cap

The only problem with these smart meters is the battery in the gas meter don't last 9yrs, mine went flat a few weeks ago so my supplier installed new gas and elec meters.
Report Cider November 28, 2024 8:24 PM GMT
My supplier sent me an email to state they had booked an appointment in two weeks to fit my new smart meter. ffs. I had a button to cancel it, but if I missed the email they'd have turned up at my door. Cancellation went through but they are claiming (OVO) I will need to get a smart meter to remain on my tariff.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- November 28, 2024 8:48 PM GMT
Lots of the tariffs are dependant on a smart meter.
Report Cider November 28, 2024 9:00 PM GMT
Yup, ironically I risked getting a tariff that had a commitment to getting a smart meter previously (Sainsbury energy, ergo edf), and they only spammed me asking me to get one, but nothing else happened. The OVO contact never mentioned that requirement, but now they are stating I have to get one. Sainsbury never went as far as actually scheduling an appointment before me agreeing to one.

Looks like smart meters are being ramped up. I'm receiving a text and an email LITERALLY every day now AND I've already had two phone calls this week (Mon/Tue). It won't be long before I start getting abusive Angry

Read somewhere that you can make a Faraday cage by covering a flour sifter in baking foil and sticking it over the meter thus blocking the signal.
No idea if it works but seems ppossible.

These lads have plenty of foil left over from tin hat manufacture
to test the theory for you.
