In December 1997, the ITV current affairs programme The Big Story broadcast testimonies from a number of former Harrods employees who spoke of how Al-Fayed routinely sexually harassed women in similar ways.[89] Al-Fayed was interviewed under caution by the Metropolitan Police after an allegation of sexual assault against a 15-year-old schoolgirl in October 2008. The case was dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service when they found there was no realistic chance of conviction due to conflicting statements.[92]

And...

Sir Keir Starmer has come under fire over the failure to charge Mohamed Fayed with sexual assault while he was chief prosecutor.

In 2008, Fayed, the then owner of Harrods, was interviewed by the Metropolitan Police under caution after a 15-year-old girl told detectives he had sexually assaulted her at the London department store.

Of course, timing..

Alexandria-born Mr Al Fayed spent a decade after the lovers’ 1997 deaths in Paris’s Alma tunnel repeatedly claiming that they were murdered in a plot by the security services and the Duke of Edinburgh.

The jury returned unlawful killing verdicts on both Diana and Dodi, but pinned the blame on the drink-driving of their chauffeur Henri Paul, who also died in the crash.

Paul was employed by the Paris Ritz, from where their journey had started on August 31, a hotel owned by Mr Al Fayed.

It was Al Fayed's bribery of Tory MPs Neil Hamilton and Tim Smith - in cash stuffed in brown envelopes - and hospitality at his luxury Ritz Hotel in Paris for cabinet minister Jonathan Aitken that led to the word "sleaze" being associated with the Major government.

It was almost certainly more damaging than the several sex scandals that engulfed Major's government in the '90s, because it involved financial impropriety and corruption and projected an image of dishonesty and Tory MPs on the take.

Hamilton was the Thatcherite MP for Tatton in the Cheshire stockbroker belt - a seat later represented by Tory chancellor George Osborne - and was made a junior minister at the Department of Trade and Industry, responsible for the City and corporate affairs, by Major after his surprise general election victory in 1992.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- September 20, 2024 4:10 PM BST
Al Fayed claimed he paid Hamilton up to £110,000 and also gave him Harrods gift vouchers and a free holiday at his Ritz Hotel in Paris, in return for asking parliamentary questions about Harrods during his battle for control of the store with Lonrho tycoon Tiny Rowland.

Smith - also a junior minister - was said to have received between £18,000 and £25,000, handed over in brown envelopes stuffed with £50 notes.

He quit straight away, but Hamilton battled on in a futile bid to clear his name.

Aitken, Major's chief secretary to the Treasury and a former defence procurement minister, was revealed to have stayed without charge at the Ritz in Paris at the same time as Saudi arms dealers.

He sued for libel but was later convicted of perjury and served a jail term.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- September 20, 2024 4:12 PM BST
Smith stood down from parliament in 1997 but Hamilton attempted to cling on in Tatton, but was comprehensively defeated by the so-called "man in the white suit", anti-sleaze candidate Martin Bell, who was backed by Labour and the Liberal Democrats.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- September 20, 2024 4:13 PM BST
The hugely damaging scandal led Major to set up the Committee for Standards in Public Life, which is still operating, though criticised at times for being toothless.

But despite its critics, the committee remains a lasting legacy of the cash-for-questions scandal and advises prime ministers, civil servants and parliament to this day.

And the committee's best-known former chairman, Sir Alastair Graham, who headed the committee from 2004 to 2007, remains a frequent critic of political scandals such as Boris Johnson's Partygate.

Hamilton, whose notoriety led him and his extrovert wife Christine to become TV celebrities, later defected to Nigel Farage's UKIP.

Aitken, on the other hand, turned to God in prison and is now an Anglican priest.

Mr Armstrong said Harrods have "full culpability for the abuse these women suffered".
US lawyer Gloria Allred, who has acted in several high-profile sexual abuse cases, said: "Underneath Harrods' glitz and glamour was a toxic, unsafe and abusive environment."

See this is the giveaway. Harrods is a brand. Its an inanimate object. Fayed sold his stake years ago ffs. Harrods owes these people nothing.

They should have sued Fayed but all of them choose not to when he was alive.

They should get absolutely nothing....except a £50 voucher for the food hall this Christmas Laugh

100 women now come forward to claim he sexually abused them and the barrister in the press conference said they have little doubt there will be women from other areas who havnt yet come forward (hint hint).
They are not ruling out going after his estate.

On the Harrods aspect, it’s common for those at the helm to take some degree of culpability; just look at governments who have to apologise for the actions of long passed and in many cases totally differing party’s actions.

There will be a redistribution of wealth for certain in this case imo.

"The Harrods of today is a very different organisation to the one owned and controlled by Al Fayed between 1985 and 2010"

"Neil Hamilton, now minister at the Department of Trade and Industry responsible for business probity, and Tim Smith, junior Northern Ireland minister, were both named yesterday as recipients of payments passed to Ian Greer Associates by Mohamed Al-Fayed, the owner of Harrods, on top of a £50,000 fee for a parliamentary lobbying campaign.

"The Royal Family's Long History with Harrods
The luxury department store received its first royal warrant in 1913, but Mohamed Al Fayed ended the relationship in 2000."

(Royal warrants give the warrant holder a right to display the Royal Arms, and only a select few can grant royal warrants.)

Everything changed in the relationship between Harrods and the royals following the deaths of Princess Diana and Mohamed's son, Dodi Al Fayed.

In 1998, the organizers of the Royal Windsor Horse Show dropped the store as a sponsor. "This was entirely a commercial decision," Simon Brooks-Ward, chairman of Windsor Equestrian Promotions, said at the time. However, the Independent reported it was not entirely a business decision, writing, "there's no secret about the Royal revulsion towards Mr Fayed since the death of Princess Diana and his remarks about an 'Establishment conspiracy.'"

The Met Police had a "special relationship" with the luxury department store "which benefits both us and them," Stephen Otter said he was told by another officer in 1999.

The Metropolitan Police would "provide additional resources at Christmas" and in return "hampers were provided" and police "Christmas parties had lots of drinks paid for", former chief superintendent Stephen Otter told Sky News.

When Mr Otter became borough commander for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in 1999, the Met Police had an Austin Mini Metro with a Harrods logo on it funded by Fayed.

When he went to Harrods to return the car, he met a Harrods security boss who he said pushed back the keys and told him: "Look, you don't understand, this is an arrangement that's been going on for a long time.

"Lots of chief superintendents have had the benefit of this relationship. And your colleagues [get] hampers at Christmas."

He said he was told: "When you've been here a bit longer, you will have a better understanding of this relationship."

Fayed became the first businessman to sponsor the Metropolitan Police by donating a Rover Kensington patrol car which he was pictured inside in 1996.

Another 65 women allege abuse by Mohamed Al Fayed
BBC says 37 of the women worked at Harrods, and earliest accusation of abuse dates back to 1977
A further 65 women have come forward to the BBC with allegations of abuse by Mohamed Al Fayed going as far back as 1977.

Since the broadcast of the BBC documentary Al Fayed: Predator at Harrods, in which five women claimed to have been raped by the billionaire, more women have come forward with claims of sexual harassment, sexual assault and rape, the BBC reported.

The broadcaster said 37 of the 65 new women to have come forward said they had worked at Harrods. One woman said she was assaulted by the former Harrods and Fulham FC owner – who died last year aged 94 – in Dubai in 1977, the earliest accusation of abuse so far.

In a statement to the BBC, Harrods said: “Since the airing of the documentary, so far there are 200-plus individuals who are now in the Harrods process to settle claims directly with the business.”

"SEX PROBE SPREADS Second police force probes ‘sexual assaults’ carried out by Mohamed Fayed at Surrey mansion as scandal grows
Claims have also been made about assaults at Fulham FC, which Fayed owned from 1997 to 2013

A woman contacted the force on Saturday — the day after London’s Met Police said it was looking at 40 new reports of attacks by the ex-Harrods boss.

It comes as the Justice for Harrods Survivors Group — now representing 116 women who say they were attacked by Fayed — said abuse was carried out throughout his empire including at the Oxted property where he spent weekends and threw lavish parties.

Surrey Police confirmed it was investigating a report of “non-recent sexual abuse”.

It said an initial search of its records did not find allegations against Fayed before a BBC documentary on September 19 outed him as a sexual predator."
