The prime minister will head to Rome on Monday to examine how Meloni’s government has cut the number of people arriving in dinghies across the Mediterranean by almost two-thirds in the past year, from 118,000 to 44,500.

Better still, don't rescue them from their boats mid-channel. Just leave them, they are not our responsibility. If I jumped overboard from a cruise liner, and no one rescued me, it would be no ones fault but my own. If I jumped in front of a tube train, I couldn't say "I expected someone to reach out and rescue me. (I'd be dead so I probably wouldn't be able to say anything much any way). This would be a deterrent. And those already here could be put to work rebuilding the infrastructure and finishing off HS2. Hard labour for 10 years or so to gain British citizenship: Seems reasonable to me.
