Strange one to go to war with before the budget in October The alleged saving is a very small fraction of the total spend of the government which will be wiped out if the campaign to get pensioners to claim pension credits work
I suppose labour felt that they had to prove to the markets they could take nasty decisions

OP,the facts are the UK is entering a period of austerity,£22 billion black hole, flatlining economy with little growth prospects. Todays July figures (which the BBC omitted) have sharp falls in exports to EU and worldwide.
Labour the only real alternative to who in reality are responsible for fuel cuts and upcoming measures,Reform aren't credible as they with Farage also have brought about what is happening.
Starmer at least trying to reset relations with other countries,a start,he isn't a big an idiot as were the torys and the majority of the English people who thought they can get by 'alone', some deep soul searching rather than blame shifting needed.

you just need to change the estimates by a fraction to manipulate any figure that you want it to be
Forecasting isnt an exact science

Change income tax bands again to get more take? (done)
Cut social welfare?
Cut public sector pay and numbers? (done)
Cut minimum wage?
Increase VAT?
New house tax on higher value properties? (mooted)
Pay points on NHS? (hardly but maybe necessary)
The tit is nearly dry, they WILL get something from somewhere and none of it is good.

Rothko maybe so but the evidence of declining services are there for all to see, no investment for years. No prison spaces, none built, RAAC in public buildings, huge council debts, Sewage and unfit for purpose water companies etc.

the whole way we tax equity needs to be looked at e.g capital gains
Im not disputing the state of some public services just that the winter fuel allowance first introduced by a labour govt was a strange one to go into battle with given the small amounts involved

I'd accept that but may be going around doing multiple smaller stuff(the backlash was quite big with this though) rather than getting labelled and hit with the higher tax party stick etc?
Budget will be interesting.

Doing multiple smaller stuff isnt good politics imo
you take the pain several times over a longer period rather than doing an unpopular budget and taking all the pain at once

RR could have chosen to tax billionaires first but no she decided to tackle pensioners
Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak must be absolutely @$?&! kicking themselves. To think they could have slashed winter fuel payments to pensioners and have had the support of 336 Labour MPs!
