With his shadow foreign secretary David Lammy at his side, he solemnly declared: 'In this dark hour, Labour stands with Israel'. He added: 'Labour stands firmly in support of Israel's right to defend itself, rescue hostages and protect its citizens.' It was all a lie. On Monday the Prime Minister signed off an arms embargo on Israel that will undermine its capacity to defend itself, rescue its hostages and protect its citizens.

Margaret Thatcher imposed an arms embargo (and oil) embargo on Israel in 1982 that lasted until 1994 after they invaded Lebanon.
