I think they're all scum but hey, a bet's a bet. It was great to see Patel crash out first, can't stand her the most.
Strange market going on - Tugendhat now 20, Stride at 50. Yet Stride was only 1 vote behind Tugendhat in the first ballot.
Always on the lookout for market nonsense value so couldn't resist a flutter on Stride - a typical Tory pig but that's no handicap here.

What a poor lot? The leading contenders are the idiotic former housing minister Mr Jenrick and Mrs Bademoch. The former broke Covid advice visiting his parents 40 miles away, and accused of arrogance; the latter lacking decorum and diplomacy in dealing with the former chairman of the Post Office.

No possible chance.

More chance of Lord Sutch than Farage being leader of the Tory.

Poor indeed. I think we can safely rule out 2 of the remainder - Badenoch and Cleverly. The Tories have had their 'token black' moment with Sunak. Make no mistake, there's long been covert racism in this party (and the electorate).  Not improved after Sunak tanked it so badly for them either.

Jenrick is damaged goods after Covid, as you say. Sunak's fine didn't stop him getting in mind. Tugendhat comes across to me as weak. Stride is more imposing, though still horrid of course. I might like him a bit more if he pulls off my reckless bet though.

Wonder who gets to pick up Patel's 14 votes.

For anyone who missed the 1st round results:-
Robert Jenrick  28.
Kemi Badenoch:  22.
James Cleverly: 21.
Tom Tugendhat:  17.
Mel Stride:     16.
Priti Patel:    14.

Seriously, after all the BS the British people went through since 2020, the Tory party itself should be scrapped.
Report PorcupineorPineapple September 5, 2024 8:23 PM BST
If the rules are the same as the last few elections - ie it goes to a members' vote if they're down to a final two - then Badenoch is the winner unless the others somehow gang up and manage to get rid of her before then.

is it relevant ?

starmer is going to kill labour...... and nigels in the wings

Just remember that when it came down to the members deciding the last time, they chose the white person, the completely useless Liz Truss. Sunak was never voted in by party members.

Here is something worth considering (it might sound nuts). Cleverly got far more votes than expected in the first round of voting. Jenrick and Badenoch got far less than expected. Would it be possible that Jenrick and Badenoch asked some of their supporters to vote for Cleverly, knowing that they themselves were going to be safely through? The purpose was to get Patel out so as not to split the extreme right vote.

Seems plausible to me. Mind you, we can expect all sorts of complex horse trading among the 118 voting MPs.

I was just looking more closely into Jenrick's past and discovered his earlier scandal of 2020, when approving a Tory donor's housing development early, so they could avoid a £45m council levy, tut tut. That made a right stink at the time, then with his lockdown breaking on top he was ousted as Housing minister soon after.

In any future election battle this would all be gleefully stirred up again. So, too much of a liability for them I reckon.

Scandal hasn't stopped recent tory leaders/PMs. Boris was sacked and caaught lying many times. Liz loved the moby, including outside of marriage.

I read his wikipedia page a few weeks back. IIRC, his education and career as an MP.... Not sure there's a word to describe it..... Silver spoon? Well Connected? lucky?

Stride gone now. If Cleverly makes the next round, I am backing Jenrick with confidence.
Report Escapee September 10, 2024 11:41 PM BST
What is your confidence based on?

He seems to have friends in very high places, but kemi has massive brand recognition.
Report impossible123 September 11, 2024 8:43 AM BST
If Mr Jenrick become PM GOD helps UK Plc. The bloke is such a lightweight, and clearly out of touch with the general public. He's also lacking charisma, smug and votability.

I do not know what to make of Mrs Badenoch. I like Mr Cleverly. I think he's genuine, caring and good for the country.

My confidence is based on the type of person tory membership normally elect and the ones they reject.

If it goes to the members Badenoch gets at least 66% of the vote

I disagree. I am certain that she won't get remotely near that figure.

Report .Marksman. September 11, 2024 3:22 PM BST
Based on this video of Badenoch versus Rayner, she would eat Starmer for breakfast at every pm question time:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPU08mdN75c
It would be hilarious and I would love to see her as leader of the opposition.
But there is a reason why she is  popular with the membership and not the parliamentary party:  Most of the membership have not met her.

And it is not just amongst most of the Tory MPs that she is not first choice.  This is what Nigel Farage said:
“She’s very unpleasant,” he says. “[Hotelier] Rocco Forte threw a party at Brown’s [Forte’s Mayfair hotel] and I was looking forward to talking to her, but we had a really unpleasant exchange. It was a social event, a happy evening, but Kemi was really aggressive towards me. She was like, ‘How dare you? If you come back, you’re going to split the vote, you’ve got to realise that you’re going to let us down very, very badly’.

“I said to her, ‘You’ve got no divine right to this, Kemi. The Conservatives have no God-given right to rule. That was what Charles I thought and look what happened to him!’”

Ouch. Did she take the point? “No, she was adamant. We didn’t even part on a pleasant note, which was hard. And I thought her attitude, well, in a way, that’s very revealing – and I won’t forget it in a hurry.”

My hunch is that Kemi would be every bit as poor a PM as Boris Johnson was.
Report yak hunt September 11, 2024 4:20 PM BST
Personally, I think she will struggle to make the last two that then go to the membership.
