Birmingham: Pub punter who 'incited violence' will be barred after counter-protester attack

Social media footage appears to show people from a counter-protest assaulting a man outside a pub. Members of the Muslim community have apologised and offered to pay for damages - while the pub's assistant manager said she will bar the man for inciting the attack.

A punter who appeared to be punched and kicked outside a pub will be barred for inciting violence, according to the assistant manager, after a demonstration against recent far-right riots.

Footage shared on social media appears to show a man attacked by counter-protesters in Birmingham on Monday night after he appeared to say something at a small group passing by.

Police have said an assault on a drinker in his 50s outside the Clumsy Swan is being investigated as violent disorder, adding his injuries are not thought to be serious.

Officers are also investigating damage done to the pub itself, after some tried to kick the door in and damaged windows.

Linda Ward, the pub's assistant manager, told Sky News she wants to ban that customer for provoking the group and inciting violence - adding Muslims have since been supportive and offered to pay for damages.

The incident was "really scary" and happened while regulars were in the pub with their families, she said, when they barricaded the doors with tables and chairs.

"After the man came outside and he got attacked, the majority of the people that were on the march put a stop to that, protected him, kept him safe," she said.

"The ones that were doing the fighting were trying to boot the door in. They cracked the glass in, damaged the handle to the doors."

Mrs Ward said other members of the counter-protest "couldn't apologise enough" on behalf of those responsible for the assault.

West Midlands Police said there was a large crowd at Bordesley Green - a short drive from the pub - following rumours on social media about a potential far-right gathering, which did not take place.

A 46-year-old male has been arrested by police investigating TV footage showing a man apparently armed with a weapon at the counter-protest.

Sky's communities correspondent Becky Johnson was approached by protesters while live on air, with a man wearing a balaclava later filmed slashing the tyre of a Sky News van.

James Bullock, 20, pleaded not guilty to violent disorder after he was accused of being involved in an incident in which a burning wheelie bin was pushed at police.

John Garside, prosecuting, told the court Bullock had "visited the location wearing gloves and a balaclava".

"visited the location wearing gloves and a balaclava"..... SO WHAT ?

Since when were arrests made because of what people were wearing ?

That’s what I was referring to 24 hours ago that the bbc shied away from
At least they have been made to report on it in the mainstream and the police had to acknowledge it.

Jess Philips having essentially justified the mass gathering, which then went on to assault by all accounts based on them being scared.

That woman is remarkable, and I actually wonder if the bbc would have meant to have published what she actually said following the elections of rule breaking by those using religion…but she herself has a very short memory. She was stood practically in tears having been targeted by Asian men, whom she was reluctant to pinpoint when saying how bad her experience had been.
