"We want our country back"

Over 100 people have been arrested after protesters set off flares and clashed with police near Downing Street in a protest over the Southport Stabbings.

A demonstration named 'Enough is Enough' was held in central London this evening, with attendees told that they can only protest in Whitehall between 7pm and 8.30pm. But protest split and many defied the restrictions put in place by police, with one group spotted moving towards Downing Street and the other towards Parliament Square.

It comes after riots by suspected far-right elements in Southport on Tuesday night saw 53 officers and three police dogs injured. The angry scenes followed misinformation spread online about the 17-year-old suspect arrested in Monday's stabbing attack at a dance class in the seaside town, which left three children dead.

If done right and if the person bruteforcing things is neither unfathomably lucky, nor has an exploit at their hands, then nowhere near in any of our lifetimes even though I plan to take advantage of upcoming advances in medicine and live for quite a few additional thousands of years.

Your realistic chances as an attacker are said exploits, a very short password, a common password (or otherwise something found in a dictionary or leaked password lists)....or finding the password scribbled down somewhere. Otherwise you are left with guessing through all possible combinations without knowing the length and which characters exactly the password was generated from. Given the massive amount of possible combinations once the passwords become even decently long-ish, that can become a very time-intensive affair. Often it's also the case that an attacker cannot relentlessly fire away hundreds of tries per second even if their processing power allowed them to do so, but rather has to wait a few seconds between each and every try (on a single computer). I doubt the authorities would really ever bother trying to decrypt a file or storage device beyond running common and known password lists. It's a near impossible task to guess a (pseudo)random password.

As for finding out where files come from: I could imagine that the secret services keep such records of everyone for a certain amount of time. Whether they give access to that data to "normal" authorities I do not know. Similar story if you use a VPN or TOR. For a lot of VPN services one should be under no illusions that the no-log policy is really a "yes-log" policy in my mind, but they are simply not given up easily. As are malicious TOR-nodes run by authorities.

In principle it is also possible for your ISP to know everything you do on the internet, including where from you downloaded which file (unless the transfer was encrypted), but in a lot of countries data protection laws probably prevent the unconditional snooping on everybody's entire internet activity by such private companies.

It's important that the authorities do not let folk know
how much they know, and indeed to let on that they
don't have capabilities that they actually do have.

I think it was Alan Turing that formulated
such rules, and worked out how much decrypted
information could be safely used without folk
working out their codes, and systems had been cracked.
Report edy October 29, 2024 11:06 PM GMT
Yeah, that's kind of what I was alluding to with the giving access to "normal" authorities. Sharing things with them might influence your ability to gather more important information through the same established methods in the future.

Similar if the secret services possess exploits (for decryption or otherwise).
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- October 29, 2024 11:25 PM GMT
Turing had cracked some German stuff and was mortified that
he couldn't tell Russians everything about stalingrad, as he
may have alerted Germans to fact the code was mostly cracked.

Indeed Churchill didn't want the Russians to know we
had cracked codes, so info was dripped to them.

Something along those lines is also meant to be the reason, up to this day, that the belief among Germans persists that carrots are not just generally good for your eyesight, but do specifically inprove your vision at night. Not concerning Turing and cryptography, but the capability of detecting airplanes with radars. To keep that hidden from the Germans and mystify them, the Brits made it known that they fed air defence operators lots and lots of carrots that enabled them to detect the German attack planes.

Stoicism, resilience, not playing the victim, personal responsibility.

Tolerance covers a lot of things. Tolerating, eg accepting depraved behaviour if the perp is not white (ie a victim), is not a value. British, or otherwise.
Report edy October 30, 2024 12:01 PM GMT
Of course liberty is never unrestricted, even in Britain. If your liberty infringes on the liberty of others, you have to make a judgement on whether liberty should be restricted. The liberty of a husband to hit his wife is in conflict with the liberty and right of the wife to not be hit.

But if I simply want to have whatever religion, I am not really infringing on anyone else's liberty and right, so I don't see why it would be British to limit that particular liberty of mine.

Edy, you are free to join any religion you wish and becoming a pastafarian would be an excellent choice.
What would be unacceptable would be to preach hatred and harm to another group so if it was found that Pastafarian scripture preached that Fajitarians should be refried in hot oil and served up with green chillies, then the teaching should be rescinded immediately or the leaders of the cult should face the full force of the law.
Report edy October 31, 2024 1:43 PM GMT
Well of course people operate within the law and one's interpretations, and actions done as a result of those readings, do not circumvent common or civil law. Acting silly is one thing, but you don't want to look silly edy. Let's wait and see, despite Police evasion lies and a

Why be the one who brings up rumours first on here if your motto is wait and see?

Indeed, rumours it is. I'll be happier when I know why the Police announced to the media

I wasn't aware of the Starmer link but I think they are two separate issues anyway, no one can see 20 years forward.
