FORMER first minister Humza Yousaf has called on the English Defence League (EDL) to be proscribed as a terrorist organisation following last night's riot in Southport.
He has written to the Home Secretary Yvette Cooper calling on her to deal with Britain's "far-right problem".
"Rhetoric is not enough. We need to take action against the far-right. I have asked the Home Secretary to use her powers to proscribe the English Defence League."
In his letter, the MSP said the "thugs" involved in the violence were chanting "the most vile Islamophobia ever witnessed on the streets of the UK".
Pointing out it was not the first time the EDL had been involved in scenes such as this, he said the group had a "long history of violence and bigotry" and claimed they fitted the criteria set out in the Terrorism Act 2000.
The Act states that terrorism is the use or threat of action which: involves serious violence against a person; involves serious damage to property; endangers a person's life (other than that of the person committing the act); creates a serious risk to the health and safety of the public or section of the public or is designed seriously to interfere with or seriously disrupt an electronic system.
It adds the use or threat of such action must be designed to influence the government or an international governmental organisation or to intimidate the public or a section of the public, and must be undertaken for the purpose of advancing a political, religious, racial or ideological cause.
Yousaf (above) added: "There can be no doubt the EDL meet these criteria. They have, on several occasions, orchestrated serious violence to both intimidate the public and attempt to influence government, while being driven by a racist, white supremacist ideology.
"Home Secretary, Britain has a far-right problem. We need to acknowledge it, confront it and deal with it."
"I hope you will show courage and not back down in the face of populist voices that have poisoned our political and societal discourse for far too long."

Mr Yousaf is a pillock to assert that opinion as a prominent public figure. No wonder his reign as Scotland 1st minister was so short.
The EDL does not support any terrorist group in any country. I think the EDL only voices their beliefs vociferously and protests on the streets of the UK.

I'm afraid the likes of Mr Yousaf will never change their insular and arrogant views of others eg everyone including other ethnics are against his or his forebears.
Why does he not ask himself the question why the country of his forebears is so corrupt, population illiterate, twisted democracy, not law abidance, dishonest, etc? Why does no other ethnic eg Chinese, Japanese, germans, Norwegians, Americans, etc, choose to live or migrate to Pakistan?
Bin Laden could manage to "live" in a big house in Pakistan for 7-years unnoticed (apparently) despite the Pakistanis are inherently nosey and jealousy of wealth. The Americans despite living in a different continent could find Bin Laden but the Pakistanis could not.

So do many Asians in the UK. But, their allegiance and practices are always the country of their forebears 1st even though that country is one of the most corrupt, unstable, lawlessness, illiterate, uncompetitive, double-standard, dishonest and insular in the world.
These are the ingredients of a community which cannot integrate or jell with any other group in any of their adopted countries. The UK is too soft and tolerant eg translator in readiness at welfare offices, etc.
Can anyone name a country where this tolerance and hospital shown to this group of immigrants in the world eg Germany, France, Japan, China, Singapore, S Korea, USA, Canada, Australia to name a few?

He never once said Pakistanis need to integrate and speak English; accept and respect British culture, tradition and rule of law; not practise hegemony. He's also never commented or apologised for the Pakistani minicab drivers who were abusing young white girls in Rotherham for over two decades.
I think Mr Yousaf is playing politics, being insincere and disingenuous. Mr Yousaf may be born in Scotland nevertheless he still thinks and behaves like a Pakistani when it suits him, I think.

When the UK is in the same scenario as Pakistan eg corruption at the highest level, twisted democracy, assassination of politicians, nepotism and cronyism, cheating at every level, etc - this is not unlikely if newly arrived immigrants are not vetted and selected - the UK Pakistanis will jump ship and depart to the home of their forebears like some did during Covid eg left the UK trying to escape Covid tha was ravaging the UK. Then had the audacity to claim they were abandoned by the British government when their countries were ravaged by Covid.
