The Ex-PM made clear he would stay on as leader until the Conservatives had "a process" in place to pick a new leader, meaning the party may need to seek an interim boss for the four months of campaigning.

Under the timetable drawn up by the backbench 1922 Committee on Monday afternoon, four candidates would go before the Conservative Party Conference in October before a postal ballot of members.

Nominations would open this Wednesday July 24 at 7pm, with hopefuls requiring the backing of ten MPs to reach the first round of voting.

After an August of campaigning around the country, Tory MPs would vote in ballots on September 4, 9, 10 and 11 - knocking one candidate out until just four remain.
Report Charlie July 22, 2024 8:13 PM BST
I may have a bet on this and it will probably be a lay of Badenoch (current favourite at about 2/1), but not for the next few weeks.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- July 22, 2024 8:13 PM BST
Those four would be given prominent speaking slots at the party gathering in Birmingham starting on September 30.

When MPs return to the Commons further votes to whittle the field down to just two would be held on October 9 and 10.

A postal vote of members would be held between the October 15 and 31, with the new leader announced on November 2.

So far more than half a dozen MPs have hinted they will run including ex-Cabinet ministers Kemi Badenoch, Robert Jenrick, Priti Patel, James Cleverly, Tom Tugendhat and Mel Stride.

Interim leaders don't count on here according to rules

So Nov 24 looks good in month Sunak replaced meerkat.

Quite a shift in the betting markets today. Steady support for Jenrick, Tugendhat and Cleverly. Slight drift for Patel but big price drift for Badenoch. They all should be able to get the backing of ten MPs but after that it becomes a bit of a lottery before Conservative party members vote to decide which candidate from the last two standing become leader. No one has officially declared as yet but it can't be far away.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- July 23, 2024 4:39 PM BST
Cleverly is a shrewd operator.

He was quite impressive on sky today
and likely a dominant figure in any debates.

Is that enough, or have the members already decided...
Report Foinavon July 23, 2024 4:42 PM BST
I've already had a small bet on Tugendhat. My guess is no better than anyone else's but he looks better value than Kemi and fits the bill for the no nation majority of the pathetic tory rump.
I can't see Suella staying with them, no future for her there.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- July 23, 2024 4:55 PM BST
My thoughts were that Tom would win.

If he does, then right wing of party can wait, or
ready made new home.

Interesting year ahead for tories.

Be brilliant for ruk if 2 liberalists make the run off. There's not too many that Tug could defeat in a run off, but then again the vast majority of people couldn't care who wins it at this point in time either. I feel like it might be someone untainted by a previous try, doubt I will be getting heavily involved until we see who makes it past the first hurdle.

maybe this time they will allow all the debates to complete before they allow voting to begin......that silly cow liz truss would never have been picked if they did that last time and all that damage to the public finances and the increased mortgage payments would have been avoided.....no wonder the tories are out......could not even organise their own vote....

Suella Braverman
James Cleverly
Priti Patel
Robert Jenrick
Kemi Badenoch
Tom Tugendhat
Mel Stride
Report yak hunt July 24, 2024 7:15 PM BST
Looking at that list, you can split it into two groups...

Right wingers-Braverman, Patel, Jenrick, Badenoch

Centrists- Cleverly, Tugendhat, Stride.

I don't give any chance whatsoever to Braverman. Don't reckon Stride can win either. Taking these two out, the betting market suggests that Patel may offer best value (currently 12.0) of the right wing group. I would guesstimate that one from each group will make the final two.
