In June it was revealed that the parent company, Telegraph Media Group, tumbled into the red last year after it set aside nearly £280m to cover loans made to the Barclay family that might not be repaid.
The group said despite a resilient financial performance, it had made losses of £244.6m in 2023 – against profits of £33.3m in the previous year.
The Barclay bros just borrowed a billion to repay other loans.
Newspapers are dependent on advertising revenue which itself is governed by the readership reach. You hardly see anyone reading printed newspapers these days so online readership is all. Putting up a paywall can be counterproductive if other news outlets offer similar content for free.

Remember Robert Maxwell the discredited former Labour MP and owner of Mirror Group Newspapers.
They asked him which newspaper he read, after The Mirror?
He replied ''The Telegraph.''

When I was a kid, one of my teachers, a science teacher pointed out that buying a decent newspaper was a great way to stay informed as to what was going on.
He pointed out that the best bits were usually not the headlines, and usually tucked away inside.
Sound advice back then, but there is so much factual stuff around these days the old times/telegraph information service is not desperately required.
All that remains, as with other papers is political bias, and preaching to the converted.
As folk who read (current) and read (past) get older and die, they are not replaced.
Will the Telegraph be a brand in demand in 25 years time?
I don't miss washing newsprint off my hands either.

I had a similar experience donny. When in the 5th form so around 1959 a bright young English teacher straight from college, brought in newspapers and set out to demonstrate to us that the best and fairest reportage could be found in The Guardian. And so began toe left-wing indoctrination of children.Personally, I preferred the Daily Express especially as it had the Giles cartoon.

Teacher said times and telegraph were best if you could get em.
My parents always bought local paper, which was good for sport and little else(imo)
Dad started buying Sunday telegraph for me when I got to about 11/12. As an adult I'd alternate between the 2, subscribing to which gave me best annual deal.
Must be well over 10 years since I went online for news.
Twitter is brilliant for science, and local history, and anything else.. I suppose.
You really should get on, and select a few accounts that interest you, and build from there. You only get feed from accounts you want, and can, in effect, build your own news stream of topics that interest you.

When I moved to Durham from Newcastle, and then travelled to Newcastle by train each morning, there were so many newspapers discarded I could have supplied wh Smith.

I noticed a few interesting twitter streams from the links posted on here, so I'll give it a go. I already pick up snippets from various sources, for example edy recommended SZ.de for left-leaning German News and I found NIUS.de for more centre right opinion over there. I also read several UK blogs as you probably gathered and of course loads of books.

I went to Durham for an interview at the University. It looked a nice place but a bit of a backwater for a young lad as I was then. I eventually decided on Liverpool for the new science facilities and it looked like a livelier place to spend a few years.

I'm sure it was. Durham full of oxbridge rejects, (so I'm told) as its often 3rd choice.
Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds, York all great places to study too, up Norf. Lots of culture within the areas.
Durham is nice, but small, but nice to live here.
I got sick of looking at brick walls around Newcastle.

Liverpool was Ok. Lovely people in the main. The city had suffered terrible destruction 20 years previously and it still showed, a lot of infrastructure spending was needed but had been a long time coming. Most of the students were relatively local, Lancashire and other northern regions, a few from the midlands and south. I've just been watching Farage's maiden speech, hence the delay in replying. Kimberley Cheatle just resigned, should have been sacked, they were too kind.

I'm not sure she should have been held responsible or not.
However she should have been able to answer questions about what happened,... Realistically she should have resigned before yesterday, it was just an utter humiliation for her and showed that she was incompetent.
Cheatle took over the Secret Service following "a turbulent couple of months in which the agency best known for protecting presidents has faced controversies related to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol."
In April 2024, after a female agent on Vice President Kamala Harris's detail attacked her superior officer and other agents, U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer requested a briefing with Cheatle to address issues regarding hiring, training and disciplinary processes. The Secret Service downplayed reports of a petition circulating within the agency alleging security vulnerabilities arising from these processes.
Maybe Biden or his adviser is to blame here for appointing Somebody not fit for task.

Surely questions need to be asked about how she was appointed.
Heading up The Secret Service is not like running a bus company or a local council. You need to know WTF you are doing.
